OKA : Whiskey Tumbler with completely new tasting experience
Handmade from oakwood. Charred inside to enhance whiskey's best flavors. Works instantly.
OKA is a whiskey tumbler that creates unique tasting experience. Handcrafted with the same manufacturing methods and materials used for original whiskey barrels since 18th century. Made to fulfill the dream of every true whiskey lover - drinking straight from a cask.
Whiskey obtains it's unique flavors from aging in charred oak barrels and the best way to reveal these flavors is to pour it back into the oak.
OKA absorbs aroma of alcohol and enhances the pleasant flavors of whiskey that makes each sip an amazing experience.
We receive a lot of questions about Charred interior and how it would interact with whiskey. Visit our FAQ's at the bottom of the page to find specific answers.
There was a dream shared by a true whiskey lover. The dream was about an old charred oak barrel found in a cold dark aging cellar. It was kept there for more than 45 long years. Whiskey was served straight from the cask and only few had a chance to experience the unique and truly old character of it. ‘’The sense of the wood, the scent of the char, they speak to your soul’’ said the dreamer.
With OKA we want to make that dream come true for you – the real whiskey lover.
We loved the idea of drinking whiskey straight from a cask and we wanted to make that kind of experience available to everyone. We collected all the necessary information about coopering process and created the tumbler that has all the qualities of original whiskey barrels as well as great usability.
The design of OKA is carefully chosen. Rounded shape of bottom fits very comfortably in hand while the much thinner top provides the best tasting experience. The inside of tumbler is sized to reach the fastest interaction time between charred oak and whiskey. This was one of the most important criteria for us - to make the tumbler work instantly.
With a smoothly finished premium class oakwood, charred interior and special attention to detail OKA will serve as fancy home bar accessory.
When tasting whiskey form OKA tumbler you will notice that the scent is much softer and more pleasant compared to a glass tumbler. It is because charred oak interior absorbs part of strong alcohol aroma therefore allowing to feel the true characteristics of whiskey.
When relatively small amount of whiskey touches large surface area of charred oak the results are incredible. This process enhances the woody, vanilla and caramel flavors like no glass tumbler could ever do, and reveals new sides of flavors that you have never explored before. You will feel the difference with first sip.
OKA tumbler is not meant for aging the whiskey, it is meant to enhance the flavors already inside it. Aging whiskey properly takes from 3 to 15 years or even more for specific brands. The big companies have been making quality whiskey for centuries so we could get properly aged product. The thing is - in a glass bottle the process of wood interacting with spirit is stopped. Therefore we all get the same tasting experience. The magic happens when whiskey is put back from whence it came.
Our goal was to create a light customization to whiskey flavors and unique tasting experience. The results are even better than expected. A mix of vanillin, oak lactone (coconut, bourbon character), toastiness and wood sugars reveal the flavors in a new way.
The best part is various labels will interact differently with OKA so one or other flavor could be more intense for different brands.
We recommend to use only high quality whiskey with OKA tumbler.
Pour whiskey into tumbler in volume of 1/4 to 1/5 of a tumbler. This will cause much better tasting results as smaller amount of spirit will be more affected from charred oak surface.
Gently swirl the tumbler with round movements to allow oxygen get to the liquid and evaporation to begin. This will release true characteristics of whiskey that have been trapped in a glass bottle for a long time. In this process whiskey will touch more surface of charred oak as well and therefore create more intense flavors.
Taste whiskey properly and reveal the flavors.
In fact the smell is as important as taste. Tasting simply confirms what your nose has already told you. If the smell is changed also the taste would be different so before making a sip, start with nosing the whiskey. This will give a great indication to what whiskey will taste like. Nosing is a very enjoyable process and the key is to take it very slowly and sniff more than once. Each time different aromas will be revealed as your nostrils get used to the strength of spirit. OKA makes nosing even more pleasant and prevents from burning the nostrils.
We believe that whiskey tasting is very individual and different experience for each one of us. The most important is to enjoy the process - this was also the main thing kept in mind when creating the OKA.
OKA is very easy to clean. It is waterproof and must be washed only in water without any detergents. The proper way to clean the outside is to wipe it with a wet cloth. The inside could be briefly washed with hot water. We recommend to wash it only before using the tumbler for the first time and before tasting a different whiskey brand.
We use premium class American white oak as it is used for original whiskey barrels and it is the best wood for whiskey storage.
American white oak has wide radial rays that give a strength and prevents from leaking if used correctly. It has no resin canals that can affect whiskey with unwanted flavors like it is in pine or other trees. When seasoned and toasted (charred) properly like it is during coopering process the amount of oak lactones increases rapidly. This gives a pleasant flavors to whiskey. We use the same wood processing methods as in coopering process, which makes American white oak a perfect material for our tumbler.
Selecting proper wood and cutting it in pieces needed for turnery. This step is very important to ensure that the tumbler will serve for a long time and look good as well.
First turnery. Raw turning for our selected oak workpiece to prepare it for charring.
Charring the inside of the tumbler. In this process a direct flame is added to inside and bottom surface. To ensure equal char level to all tumblers this process is done for a certain time.
Bottom installation. The bottom is installed as a separate piece and placed with long rays horizontally. The reason for that is to prevent tumbler from leaking.
Final turnery and sanding. In this step the OKA's final shape is created. Our tumbler is handmade so we have chose to collaborate with the best turning masters. Only the most skilled turners can make the same exact shape and equal quality for such amount of products.
Engraving logo. OKA's logo will be engraved on the bottom of all tumblers.
Surface finish. For protection and long lasting the outside surface is coated with special wood oil. We use food safe surface finish oil that is absolutely inert and harmless and it has no smell. It still provides the best protection from moisture and surface damages.
We are really passionate about our tumbler and can't wait for you to try it out. However to offer OKA for a reasonable price we need to make an order for at least 200 units from turnery.
Premium class oakwood is really expensive. To lower manufacturing costs and offer you a better price we have to make a bigger order for wood as well.
Kickstarter is a great place to connect with potential audience. We believe that this is the best and most efficient way for us to get our product to you.
Risks and challenges
Thanks to Kickstarter community we are running our own workshop for about two years now. We have two successfull campaigns in our background. With our previous experience on manufacturing and shipping we can surely say that we are ready to deliver you the high quality product. We have all tooling required, best colaboration partners for wood turnery and materials. Our goal is to have the finished product ready for shipping until this year's April. Though we are well prepeared there is always a chance for small delays. We have learned a lot from our previous projects and can surely say there is no better feeling then getting a review from a satisfied backer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
