The Transparency Project started as a chance to show a friend the beauty I see in her. She is two years into her transition and posted on Facebook asking photographer friends if someone would be willing to do a photo shoot with her to, "help her feel pretty". I have been a professional photographer for over 10 years and was excited at the opportunity to use my skills to help her see the beautiful woman I see. After telling some friends about my upcoming shoot I had volunteers to do hair and make up for her big day.
I met a fellow photographer at a party who gave me the idea to turn this into an on going project and to offer this service to other members of the trans community. I loved the idea and shared it with several trans friends to get their feedback. The idea was well received and encouraged.
My goal is to offer free portrait sessions to the trans community. The project is to help with body dysmorphia and let them see themselves as their true selves. As our motto says we want to help, "Let the true you shine through".
The idea for this project is that everything will be paid for through donations. Anyone receiving a portrait session will never be asked to pay for anything. My plans are to apply for non-profit status and to grow this into not only a portrait session but also a learning opportunity with beauty and styling demonstrations and classes.
Risks and challenges
With this project my biggest challenge right now is having studio space to conduct portraits. I am more then capable of offering outdoor portraits but as my project is portraits not everyone wants to be outside. I have located a space in the Atlanta area where for a small monthly fee I can have access to a photography studio.
Having makeup artist and hair stylist are also an important part of the project. These people invest their own money into materials and deserved to be compensated. Having the capital to be able to pay for the monthly membership and for a makeup and stylist's time is my biggest hurdle at the moment.
Already in the few short days since I announced my project on Facebook I have already had incredible positive feedback from the community. I have no doubts that this project will be able to continually receive positive feedback and help from the community. I already have several people lined up for sessions and am ready to jump in and make this project a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
