Help us bring a fresh fruits and veggies to the families of Oceano! 31 days to raise $10,000!
Healthy Food and Fresh Fruit are something all bodies need, help Oceano's families and childrens have greater access to healthy food and farm fresh produce.
Your help will go to site repairs for our potential site. The Oceano Nursery has had an historic influence on the small town of 7,000. It is the beginning of the business corridor and is a great node of transportation.
To open a fully functional Market we will need: canopies, tables, electric support, crowd flow devices, signage and flyers, flyers, flyers. It will be a new thing so we will need to invest strongly in advertising and paid-people power! Our volunteers are great, but we'll need more folks.
Oceano is an unincorporated community in San Luis Obispo County. We have over 7,200 residents. Nearly 40% of our residents are from Hispanic decent with 16% of our residents living below the poverty line. Our median household income is a $34,000 compared to California average of $57,000. The current unemployment rate is a staggering 8.2% (http://www.city-data.com/city/Oceano-California.html).
Of the 22 communities and cities in SLO county, Oceano is one of the few unincorporated cities that does not have their own Farmers' Market.
A Farmers' Market plays a vital role in community beyond fulfilling the urgent need for fresh, local produce. Markets provide a gathering place and community outlet for families to connect with their neighbors--and their farmers!
As an unincorporated community we fall under jurisdiction for county guidelines for regular events, making our starting costs higher than most Farmers' Market Associations. In Oceano we also have the disadvantage of a very small (but dedicated!) business district. Many of our businesses are small, family-operated and historic businesses. The kind of businesses that have to struggle to keep afloat in these changing times.
We've also been met with the most unfortunate and untimely passing of our District Supervisor, Paul Teixeira (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2013/06/27/2562927/slo-county-supervisor-paul-teixeira.html). Teixeira was one our best and most passionate supporters! So, currently we do not even have county representation for our project.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are a dedicated group of community volunteers and we will continue to work towards our goal of a Farmers' Market for Oceano! We have already overcome many local challenges and risks and will continue to do so. Many challenges still lay ahead of us as file, file, file and sign checks to the many County entities to make Oceano's dream possible. The people of Oceano have made it absolutely clear they want a Farmers' Market with a unique Oceano flair and to bring it to them will require a lot of high initial costs.
