About this project

LightMode has created a permanent helmet modification that surrounds your helmet with electroluminescent (EL) materials in true 360° fashion. The modification helps riders become more visible in night settings by illuminating the highest point of the rider: their helmet. For riders, getting noticed is not just about the ego boost, it's also about safety. Motorcycles are roughly 1/6th the size of a 4-door sedan. That translates to a significant reduction in visibility which every rider, and rider's family, has to accept.

According to a study published by BMJ (formerly the British Medical Journal), the use of a white helmet was associated with a 24% lower risk compared to wearing a black helmet. Evidently, the visibility of one’s helmet plays a significant role in rider safety. A major issue is that riders are very likely to forgo safer gear for better aesthetics. But we ask, why not give them both?

Every LightMode helmet modification is powered by a small controller that has three mode selections: constant glow, blink, and off. The controller uses two AA batteries and lasts 13 hours when using 2000 mAh NiMH rechargeables. The controller easily clamps onto the helmet via the space between the shell and the padding or via a curved adhesive mount. All LightMode controllers mount to the right side to keep the left side free for Bluetooth communication devices.

The EL components are fixed to the helmet using a special combination of super strong glue and a chemical accelerator.

Create your own design! We offer two complete Do-It-Yourself Kits. Kit A ($69) contains the following:

  • 3 meters of EL wire
  • 50 cm of EL tape (Yes! It can be cut)
  • Controller with 3 mode selections
  • Special adhesives
  • Curved mount
  • 3 meters of design string
  • Downloadable instructional video

The package comes in 5 colors: aqua, red, white, green, and blue. Mix and match! No prior knowledge of electronics is required!

Due to the unique features and contours of each helmet, EL Tape may not always easily fit into your design. EL Tape is not as flexible as EL Wire, so this package contains 4.5 meters of EL Wire and no EL Tape to accommodate your needs better.

  • 4.5 meters of EL wire
  • Controller with 3 mode selections
  • Special adhesives
  • Curved mount
  • 4.5 meters of design string
  • Downloadable instructional video

This package comes in 7 colors: aqua, red, white, green, blue, yellow, and pink. No prior knowledge of electronics is required!

Don't have the time or confidence to build a LightMode helmet yourself? Fret not! Order a fully functional, complete, HJC FG-17 LightMode helmet with 3 meters of EL wire, 50 cm of EL tape, and controller with 3 mode selections already fixed onto the helmet. Helmet color is available in black, matte black, silver, and white. XS - 3XL. Comes in 5 EL colors: aqua, red, white, green and blue.

Please note: Complete LightMode helmets will be shipped after the LightMode kits as they take longer to make.

Designs of the additional helmets will be similar to the HJC FG-17 LightMode helmet.

The goal of this project is to raise enough funds for bulk orders. The cost of each individual component necessary to create a LightMode helmet needs to be driven down, and the only way to do that is by ordering large amounts. All necessary research has already been conducted. We're ready to go, but we need your help to bring the per-unit cost down.

Risks and challenges

The big unknown is quantity. Since this market has not been tested, approximating the number of backers is a difficult task. To account for this uncertainty, we have taken the 'worst case scenario' approach in all of the part sourcing. We have ensured that all our suppliers are capable of producing quantities in the hundreds, if not thousands.

Since we make all the helmets and kits at home, there won't be any downtime in terms of labor. The quantity of orders will play a determining factor in the swiftness that we can get each order out the door. Luckily, we can always recruit the help of family and friends to get orders shipped more timely if need be.

We will be in regular communication with our suppliers and backers to ensure a smooth production and shipment. Our goal is to have everything shipped out within 30 days after the end of this campaign. If you are unsure about something before backing us, please do not hesitate to ask.

EDIT 1: Since each complete LightMode helmet will be made by an army of one, we will have to limit the orders to just a few of each model so that we can ship them out in a timely manner. Pre-orders will still be taken after the campaign has ended if the limit is reached.

FAQ

  • Every state/province has its own legislation when it comes to motor vehicles. The state of California does not consider the vehicle operator as part of the vehicle, so the laws that govern the lighting of a motor vehicle do not apply, and therefore this is legal there. In BC, Canada, it is technically illegal, but we have ridden with it on while around, beside, and in front of countless police officers and have not been pulled over for it. Our goal is to improve safety, and we think most authorities recognize this.

Please phone your local police department if you would like peace of mind before pledging. We are not responsible for any encounters you may come across with your local authorities.

  • Yes, but it is not recommended. It's best just to switch the helmet off if it starts to rain and let it dry completely before turning it on. The electronic components are not waterproof.

  • Not at all. It's incredibly faint. So faint, you wouldn't even be able to hear it over the noise of traffic, let alone the wind or your engine.

  • Negative. With our tests, they stayed cool to the touch after 13 hours of continuous use.

  • As an engineering physicist who has studied more optics than the average person, I'd love to go into a super in-depth answer, but I'll keep it simple. The red color filter simply blocks out more colors in the visible spectrum compared to the other color filters. This translates to a dimmer glow. It's not bad, but if you have another color in mind, I'd go with that one.

  • You absolutely can. In fact, that is how we built our first LightMode helmet, and that is also how we learned about all the mistakes we made. Do you trust yourself to get everything right the first try? Do you know how to extend the life of your modification? Do you know what's the most effective way to adhere the components to your helmet? Do you know how to mount the controller to your helmet without it falling off after a month?

We spent the last 9 months researching and developing the best way to connect everything together while keeping installation as user friendly as possible. We tested 16 different adhesives and different combinations so that you don't have to. We've ridden with it in the rain, around police officers, on highways, and even walked away from a crash.

  • We have not done any testing with modular helmets, but we suspect that if you leave some slack for the EL wire around the joint of the helmet, it should work fine. Just be sure to leave enough clearance for the chin section to flip up.
