I'm a student graphic designer, currently in my first year at Norwich University of the Arts. I've always enjoyed history, photography and graphics and Time Machine Tees is what happens when all these passions get combined!
The project began when I started to mess around with old black and white photographs, adding colours to them and exploring the stories they contained. I was fascinated by all of these little glimpses into the past and thought they should be appreciated. I got the idea to print these photos I love onto shirts and Time Machine Tees was born!
Time Machine Tees are all-over printed t-shirts featuring photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries transformed with vibrant colours, bringing the photos back to life.
The shirts themselves are American Apparel and printed in the UK using a method called sublimation. This is where the design is printed and then heated to dye the t-shirt fibres rather than a transfer on the surface, leading to a high quality finish and vibrant colour.
For the first set of t-shirts, there are five designs, each a different photograph! One of these will be a Kickstarter exclusive, a limited edition print just for those who pledge to help fund Time Machine Tees. The shirts will be available in Small, Medium and Large.
Tasiusaq (1889) - Kickstarter Exclusive
Photograph of Tasiusaq Bay, Greenland taken in August 1889. The colours are inspired by those of the Kickstarter logo. It will be exclusively produced for the awesome pledgers that make up this fantastic crowdfunding community.
This photograph, take in April 1927, shows Rauma in Telemark, Norway with a traditional cabin in the snow-covered mountains.
This photograph was taken in 1907 and depicts the view over Stongfjorden, Norway and the surrounding mountains. The photographer himself was a member of the family that owned this land overlooking the fjord that was used as a farm.
Lahti, Finland around 1935. The photo shows the radio station and masts and the view over the city centre before the outbreak of World War II.
Arsuk, Greenland in 1889. The name of the village means 'beloved place' in the Greenlandic language. This photograph overlooks the fjord and mountains to the north-west.
Small: 34" - 36"
Medium: 38" - 40"
Large: 42" - 44"
- The Shirts
This project's target is £2,500 which if achieved would be used to not only fund the production and packaging of the reward items but to also set up an online store for Time Machine Tees. This will open the door for loads more designs meaning more pieces of wearable history can be created. The money would also allow me to purchase the rights to photographs from archives across the world, helping to create diversity within the brand. At the moment I'm limited to using photographs that are made freely available by a small group of national archives. I really would love the opportunity to expand the range, creating themed and seasonal collections of shirts that appeal to the retrophiliac in all of us.
The Kickstarter is an awesome way to raise awareness of the idea and get people interested. It would be a brilliant springboard to launch Time Machine Tees from!
If you're interested in pledging any money and helping Time Machine Tees come to fruition, that would be awesome! To say thank you there are some reward categories.

Risks and challenges
The challenges that this project will face are mainly related to printing and production of the shirts but the company I am using is local and I have been in contact with them prior to this Kickstarter. I know that they will be able to produce the shirts, as seen in the photographs, to a high standard and on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
