New community site and Battle Orchestrator Video

Hi backers,

This update has some exciting stuff!

Today we have launched our new community site which in addition to the revamped look also features an integrated chat and brand new forums. You will all receive an invite during the next few days via email with username, password and instructions on how to activate your accounts on the new community site. This allows us to merge the PayPal and Kickstarter backers into one happy family!

The new forums will be where you can discuss all things related to The Mandate and we look forward to reading more of the fan lore that was already posted on the old forums. We are in the process of appointing moderators but if the discussions on the old forums and our Kickstarter comments page is any indication then they should have an easy time. Later on we will also be reaching out to military / ex-military and historians to act as volunteer consultants to help us make a better game but more on that in a future update.

Also, the new forums is where you will be able to receive feedback if you pledged for a design tier. There will be one sub-forum for each design tier and all backers may read these forums but we will access-restrict posting rights to backers who have bought design tiers [specifics TBD]. We believe this will help keep discussions and feedback civil [you can always send a PM with your feedback to the author if you have not purchased a design tier].

The community site is not 100% complete and we will add functionality over the next days:

  • Community chat: next week
  • Ability to permanently mute the music on the front page: next week
  • Guidelines, templates and examples for player design tiers: next week
  • New faction details and more lore: within two weeks (check the poll for hints…)

IMPORTANT: We use the email you are registered with in BackerKit as a basis to send out invites to the community site. This email is whichever you supplied when donating via PayPal or Kickstarter [we are importing these from BackerKit]. So if you wish to change your email in BackerKit please go and do that now before the import process starts. If you deleted your BackerKit invite email then CLICK HERE and insert your email to get another BackerKit invitation.

Next up is our new Battle Orchestrator video and Eurogamer did an article on it earlier today. CLICK HERE to check it out. The focus of this video was to show off the progress for the visuals on the ships [procedural textures, physically based shaders] as well as the battle orchestrator itself. Remember you can pause the game at any time and plan things out. Make Suvarov proud!

The following will be repeated three times for your convenience:

  • The speed of ships, their turning rate, the weapon firing rate etc are NOT representative of intended gameplay/pacing
  • The speed of ships, their turning rate, the weapon firing rate etc are NOT representative of intended gameplay/pacing
  • The speed of ships, their turning rate, the weapon firing rate etc are NOT representative of intended gameplay/pacing.

Moving on our friends over at Snowcastle are making a wild JRPG-like game called Earthlock. It has a special take on both resource management, character progression and combat. They have a modern and refreshing art style and you can grow your own ammo! They only have 8 days left on their Kickstarter, so if this is your type of game, be sure to check it out now.

Also, we wanted to mention Serpent in the Staglands which is an isometric party-based CRPG. It is being developed by a husband-wife team and draws inspiration from both Baldur’s Gate and Darklands. Darklands is an old Microprose classic and has served as inspiration for The Mandate, especially with respect to the character prologue. CLICK HERE to check out their Kickstarter campaign. They are already funded but have some nice stretch goals.

That’s it for now. We will have more cool stuff to show you soon (TM). Don’t forget to check your email over the next few days and come join us on the new community site!

I'm glad that I recalled to check in and see that it's working now.

You really should send out a notice to let everyone know, Peri.

Off to see if I can register now...

    2. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 15, 2014

@David Sibley: Your @hotmail is registered with us. If you wish us to send the invite to another email, please send a private message via Kickstarter and we will sort this out!

    3. David Sibley on April 14, 2014

I connect to Kickstarter via Facebook. Which means I never received a backerkit invite. How do Kickstarter backers in the same position as myself access the new website?

    4. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 10, 2014

@all: Both the web server and forums are working fine now. If you did not manage to register earlier due to technical problems (including the 403 error / Access Denied), please check and read the latest post. It includes instructions on how to receive a reinvite.

I'm glad(?) I'm not the only one seeing that 'Access Denied' error.

    6. Rand Chua TL on April 8, 2014

      Love the new website!

    7. Helena on April 8, 2014

@ Anaxphone: I have a similar problem (keep getting an 'Access Denied' message when I try to log in). :-(

    8. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 8, 2014

@all: Earlier today we upgraded our web server capacity by 25x but then encountered technical problems as part of this upgrade process. We are currently debugging to identify what the problems are. So please be patient, we will resolve this. We have an overview of which backers have and have not been able to login so we can issue re-invites as needed once the technical problems have been sorted out.

Well, at least I now know why I keep getting a "Bad Server Response" when attempting to log in to set my password.

May want to toss out a message about the situation, Peri.

Also, have you considered contacting the mods of /r/AskHistorians or /r/BadHistory (there's a lot of overlap) on reddit about help with the history parts? Lots of historians with a love of strategy games and Russian history over there...

    10. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 7, 2014

@all: We are taking the servers down for a short while to triple capacity.
@Timothy: 4000-5000 backers have been invited so far today. The servers are being hammered pretty hard, so we are stopping the import process for today. We will import the reminder during early morning European time when people are either sleeping or at work.

    11. Gemini on April 5, 2014

no e-mail here either, have revisited backerkit just in case but nothing as yet.

    12. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 5, 2014

@Vojta: We are working on this. It may take a bit of time. Our primary and secondary solutions for sending out emails did not work well. We discovered that the registration links got garbled/broke in the emails as some of our backers reported also and we also encountered other technical problems (which did not show up in the initial test runs).

We are currently checking two other options for sending the email. Keep in mind we need to send out emails in such a way that backers with @gmail, @hotmail etc get the email properly and so we avoid being blocked or ending up in spam filters. So this process is a bit more complicated than we had anticipated but we are working on it.

    13. Vojta Růžek on April 5, 2014

      I still got no e-mail, what's wrong?

    14. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 4, 2014

@All: Technical problems should now be resolved and we can scale up if needed to match increased traffic. We are working on the user import but hit a few snags
@Jason Garner: You will always have full control over your flagship (the ship where the player captain resides) both in 3D combat and in the BO interface. As for your "wingmen" (technically NPC captains) whether you may issue orders both via the BO and in 3D combat view is TBD. It will come down to playtesting as well as the experience we are aiming for: When commanding multiple ships you wear the admiral's hat in addition to the captain's hat if that makes sense? Also NPC captains should interpret the general orders you issue + their personality traits will play a role, also a good excuse for a court martial / free space walk if they mess up your plans ;)

Looks Great. Like the video, plus the strategic emphasis in the game, that's why I enjoy the Total War Games

Looking forward to seeing some Boarding and Crew interaction related videos in due course. Graphics look nice as well

    16. Helena on April 4, 2014

Nice video (if a bit short). The new site is looking good as well.

    17. Patrick on April 4, 2014

Ridiculously smooth looking! Happy camper right here!

Great update!! Also that was a cool mention about Earthlock, I think it's going to be a really fun game and the art style certainly is very beautiful.

For now game looks good, and I hope it will be even better from now. Space battles remind me Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, which is grate game for me. About community site, that struck me, is the favicon icon of drupal ;). Except that icon, stie looks great.

NOOOO, I have been ninjad by the Netzbummler. BTW, Netzbummler, I like your sense of humor. :)

    22. Netzbummler on April 4, 2014

Sorry if I didn't quite catch it, but is the speed of ships, their turning rate, the weapon firing rate etc representative of intended gameplay/pacing?

      Just kidding! :-P

    23. Rand Chua TL on April 3, 2014

Once the community site is fully up do give us an update too. ^_^

    24. Jason Garner on April 3, 2014

Right so regarding the orchestrator, I take it we control the center ship in real time and the two wingmen are controlled via the waypoints you showed us how to set up in the video.

What about if you want to control your wingmen in the battle itself or get them to react independently by themselves, do they have a short cut order menu that you can access from inside the battle to make them spread out/stay close/act on your own initiative ect or can you only give them orders by returning to the orchestrator screen?

    25. Amenomade on April 3, 2014

Wasn't expecting turret to pop out, it's cool, I like pop out things, but isn't that a wast of space on a space ship with a shield ? as you don't need to protect them inside the hull ?
And the Battle Orchestrator, that's amazing, remind me a little frozen synapse and if you add perfect control on every little system of the ship... that would be amazing².
See you in two week for the complete and working website with all the feature !

Great update and video, one thing I wonder is will shields be common or will it be something that not every ship can afford to have. I noticed the pirates did not have any.

    27. John Gardner on April 3, 2014

Wow the Battle Orchestrator video was fantastic !! would liked to have seen more of it :) looking forward to my email invite for the forums. Thanks for all your hard work.

    28. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 3, 2014

      @Vojta, matty:
You cannot create a user yourself on the new community site as it is access restricted (by invite only). We will import your email from BackerKit tomorrow and send you an invite. Today we are only importing a few dozen backers to verify that the import process works correctly.

    29. Devil Khan on April 3, 2014

      It's up just really slow.
btw @Perihelion the chat is much better than the old one, but still annoying as it is browser based only :/

    30. Vojta Růžek on April 3, 2014

I can't log into your website, and I also can't have a password sent, I am being told that my e-mail is not recognized by your website, will this be fixed (PS. I am a backer).

I can't login to your community site and I can't request a new password because my kickstarter backer email address is not recognized as a user name or an e-mail address.

    32. J.L. on April 3, 2014

Looks like a sleek and user-friendly interface, that. Well done! (c:

Wow, the Battle orchestrator looks incredible. I can't wait to get my hands on this game.

    34. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on April 3, 2014

@Ian Howell: Yes the community site is offline and we are investigating what happened. Perhaps the site got hit by too many backers who have read the update. We can easily scale capacity so it will not be a problem if that is the case.

    35. TheRealCuran on April 3, 2014

The new page seems a bit slow... almost feels like when Cloud Imperium Games tried to keep their infrastructure up during the initial campaign. ;-)

      Keep us posted!
