Today we have a very special something to share with you, namely the third and last piece which we recorded with David Bradley (as Lord High Admiral Suvarov) for use with our Kickstarter campaign. Before we get to that, we thought we would touch on a couple of things.
We have already gotten quite a bit of media coverage from both press and youtube gamers which is damn cool, but getting an endorsement from industry veterans is cool and very humbling at the same time:
"It looks like a fantastic project."- Julian Gollop - Designer of XCOM/UFO:EU (1994)
"They’ve done a really great Kickstarter campaign, are already funded, but are now looking to make it to their stretch goals, which frankly speaking are worth it. "
- Swen Vincke, Larian Studios, Divine Divinity series++
Thanks guys! /bow
We are getting a lot of questions about what exactly goes into each design tier. Today we will clarify the difference between the “name a marine”, “name a specialist”, “design an officer” and “design a captain”. We also have a little surprise: In addition to being able to name a marine you will also get to pick his/her ethnicity (we will circulate a survey later to handle this)! For the enlisted we will in addition let you pick which specific service branch he or she belongs to. Examples of service branches include engineering, medical, infantry etc. The list of service branches is not finalized but which service branch you pick will affect the colour pattern on your uniform. An example can be seen here.
For the officer and captain you will not only write their backstory which will be included in the in game lore codex, you will also specify which skills they will have. Furthermore, you will specify his/her allegiance. For the officer you get to write one page of backstory while for the captain you get to write two pages of backstory (one page goes in the lore codex, both pages go into the great captain doc). The captain tier also grants you the Great Captain Doc PDF which is included automatically with all $75 pledge tiers (Cossack Captain) and above. With two pages per captain this document will be at least 600 pages but may actually hit 700 page or more. We will make sure it is properly sorted and indexed!
IMPORTANT! You will be able to search for and recruit named marines and enlisted at your recruitment facilities in your star base. The same is true for officers and captains with one big difference: they have an allegiance or faction that they are loyal to. Do not expect to be able to call in a captain who is loyal to The Mandate if you yourself are playing as a Pirate!
Hopefully, this has cleared up some misunderstandings about marines, enlisted, officers and captains. Next update we will cover the digital add-ons “design a squadron” and “design a marine platoon” and perhaps a few others!
Also, if you do not have funds to get your dream pledge tier right now, do not despair! Once we open the BackerKit store you will be able to purchase additional digital add-ons and also upgrade your current pledge. As mentioned before, think about what you can afford short-term and do not go for broke before Christmas on our account. Our BackerKit store will be open throughout January 2014. We will be here next year as well!
Keep in mind that we will still count stretch goals on BackerKit. In addition to our $700.000 (star base boarding operations) and $800.000 (mod support), we also have the $650.000 and $750.000 stretch goals which grant digital add-ons free of charge to anybody who has pledged $50 or $25, respectively. The digital add-ons in question are the art bible, strategy guide and character pack #3 (combined value $25).
We will be doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on this Sunday to answer questions as a count down towards the end of the campaign. We expect to start around 9 PM CET / 8 PM GMT / 3 PM EST / 12 AM PST and will keep it running for several hours until we a) pass out or b) you stop asking questions. Announcements will be made on the official twitter @Mandategame as well as on our Facebook page. As a special treat we will try to get Garret to do a live stream and do some drawing while we are taking questions!
Now, then, we have made you wait long enough. Here is the final video for our Kickstarter, called “The Destroyers”, after an old poem by Rudyard Kipling. It focuses on boarding combat and should hopefully answer some questions. Remember, this is pre-production footage but it should illustrate the direction we want to go in. Expect the final game to be at least 10x more awesome! Enjoy!
Finally, we wanted to do a shout out to Guido Henkel and his team who are working on Deathfire, a party-based RPG which brings back memories of Realms of Arkania, Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder and many more!
“Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore” is a single-player, first-person RPG with turn-based combat that truly hearkens back to the roots of traditional computer RPGs with features that players haven’t seen in years, such as a deep character system that features over 40 different attributes and traits, as well as disadvantages.
“Deathfire” also makes sure the player is at the heart of the game, that every action has an impact on the story and on the world around him. From outdoor settings to deep dungeons, the game runs the entire gamut of RPG lore and adds on top, characters with diverse personalities and social behaviors. In short, it may just be the game you’ve always wanted to play.
