The Destroyers

Hi backers,

Today we have a very special something to share with you, namely the third and last piece which we recorded with David Bradley (as Lord High Admiral Suvarov) for use with our Kickstarter campaign. Before we get to that, we thought we would touch on a couple of things.

We have already gotten quite a bit of media coverage from both press and youtube gamers which is damn cool, but getting an endorsement from industry veterans is cool and very humbling at the same time:

"It looks like a fantastic project."- Julian Gollop - Designer of XCOM/UFO:EU (1994)

"They’ve done a really great Kickstarter campaign, are already funded, but are now looking to make it to their stretch goals, which frankly speaking are worth it. "
- Swen Vincke, Larian Studios, Divine Divinity series++

Thanks guys! /bow

We are getting a lot of questions about what exactly goes into each design tier. Today we will clarify the difference between the “name a marine”, “name a specialist”, “design an officer” and “design a captain”. We also have a little surprise: In addition to being able to name a marine you will also get to pick his/her ethnicity (we will circulate a survey later to handle this)! For the enlisted we will in addition let you pick which specific service branch he or she belongs to. Examples of service branches include engineering, medical, infantry etc. The list of service branches is not finalized but which service branch you pick will affect the colour pattern on your uniform. An example can be seen here.

For the officer and captain you will not only write their backstory which will be included in the in game lore codex, you will also specify which skills they will have. Furthermore, you will specify his/her allegiance. For the officer you get to write one page of backstory while for the captain you get to write two pages of backstory (one page goes in the lore codex, both pages go into the great captain doc). The captain tier also grants you the Great Captain Doc PDF which is included automatically with all $75 pledge tiers (Cossack Captain) and above. With two pages per captain this document will be at least 600 pages but may actually hit 700 page or more. We will make sure it is properly sorted and indexed!

IMPORTANT! You will be able to search for and recruit named marines and enlisted at your recruitment facilities in your star base. The same is true for officers and captains with one big difference: they have an allegiance or faction that they are loyal to. Do not expect to be able to call in a captain who is loyal to The Mandate if you yourself are playing as a Pirate!

Hopefully, this has cleared up some misunderstandings about marines, enlisted, officers and captains. Next update we will cover the digital add-ons “design a squadron” and “design a marine platoon” and perhaps a few others!

Also, if you do not have funds to get your dream pledge tier right now, do not despair! Once we open the BackerKit store you will be able to purchase additional digital add-ons and also upgrade your current pledge. As mentioned before, think about what you can afford short-term and do not go for broke before Christmas on our account. Our BackerKit store will be open throughout January 2014. We will be here next year as well!

Keep in mind that we will still count stretch goals on BackerKit. In addition to our $700.000 (star base boarding operations) and $800.000 (mod support), we also have the $650.000 and $750.000 stretch goals which grant digital add-ons free of charge to anybody who has pledged $50 or $25, respectively. The digital add-ons in question are the art bible, strategy guide and character pack #3 (combined value $25).

We will be doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on this Sunday to answer questions as a count down towards the end of the campaign. We expect to start around 9 PM CET / 8 PM GMT / 3 PM EST / 12 AM PST and will keep it running for several hours until we a) pass out or b) you stop asking questions. Announcements will be made on the official twitter @Mandategame as well as on our Facebook page. As a special treat we will try to get Garret to do a live stream and do some drawing while we are taking questions!

Now, then, we have made you wait long enough. Here is the final video for our Kickstarter, called “The Destroyers”, after an old poem by Rudyard Kipling. It focuses on boarding combat and should hopefully answer some questions. Remember, this is pre-production footage but it should illustrate the direction we want to go in. Expect the final game to be at least 10x more awesome! Enjoy!

Finally, we wanted to do a shout out to Guido Henkel and his team who are working on Deathfire, a party-based RPG which brings back memories of Realms of Arkania, Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder and many more!

“Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore” is a single-player, first-person RPG with turn-based combat that truly hearkens back to the roots of traditional computer RPGs with features that players haven’t seen in years, such as a deep character system that features over 40 different attributes and traits, as well as disadvantages.

“Deathfire” also makes sure the player is at the heart of the game, that every action has an impact on the story and on the world around him. From outdoor settings to deep dungeons, the game runs the entire gamut of RPG lore and adds on top, characters with diverse personalities and social behaviors. In short, it may just be the game you’ve always wanted to play.

Think I got a concept for my officer that I'm happy with. Now to read all the background info on the Mandate and write the one page...

    2. Guillermo Mena on November 30, 2013

Great! The reason I asked was that the original rewards for the $50 and $75 levels don't really do that much for me. I like the idea of naming a character (marine, specialist, officer or captain) and I like the stretch goal add-on extra rewards. So I'd much rather stay at $40 here instead of the $50 I raised it to and then pay $25 or $30 or even $50 to name or design an NPC. It just seems much more worth it than 3D models or alpha access for my tastes. I'm sure others still will love that stuff.

    3. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 30, 2013

@Guillermo: Yes! It is the total $ backer donation that counts, e.g.

      $100 @ 550000
      $50 @ 650000
      $25 @ 750000

    4. Guillermo Mena on November 30, 2013

      @Peri
Just to clarify, if I'm at the $40 level here and pay $25 to name a marine, will that count as being a $65 backer in terms of getting the $50 level extra digital add-ons if (when) the $650K stretch goal is reached?

    5. Igor on November 30, 2013

okay thanks. pardon me i missed that section.
such a long time to wait, but this project seems awesome

    6. Terrana on November 30, 2013

@Perihelion: Ah, thank you, I knew I'd seen it somewhere.

    7. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 30, 2013

@Igor: Alpha is in late Q4 2014, Beta is scheduled for early 2015. If you check in our Risks & Challenges section, there is a link to a timeline there (same one Terrana is referring to)

    8. Terrana on November 30, 2013

@Igor I don't have it to hand, but there was a timeline floating around the forums that put Beta at the beginning of 2015.

    9. Igor on November 30, 2013

      thanks for the answers.
still when do you plan to go Beta or Early Access?

    10. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 30, 2013

@ErekoseDM: You will be able to recruit your own named marines and enlisted. To recruit officers and captains you will need to have matching allegiance, however. So if you design a pirate captain but you play as a Grand Fleet officer, do not expect that pirate captain to come willingly to aid you...
@ErekoseDM: At least until end of January 2014, we may extend this if there is community interest in this
@ErekoseDM: Yes, BackerKit is flexible, you will be able to add custom $ and then do whatever you want (within reason). We may add additional digital add-ons in BackerKit that are not yet available (we got a lot of good feedback on this already from backers who want X but not Y from reward tier Z)
@Igor: Yes, infantry/marines that take part in boarding actions will gain xp and qualify for leveling up.
@Igor: You may eventually train up your infantry/marines to a veteran/elite level similar to the Preobrazhensky Lifeguard Regiment, the Empress' own bodyguard. However, there are a few traits you may not be able to copy/replicate 100%. For example they are Guards infantry [making them immune to morale checks/failures], with a long and honoured tradition and a very strong esprit de corps.

    11. Bill Schneider on November 30, 2013

@Stavros, I can't speak for the game, or for any other navy than the RN (although most will follow a similar structure), but officers have a twofold job - one is to be in charge of a division of men, who will come to you with their problems, and you are responsible for their welfare and work (you also write their reports etc). The second is your own job - officers are watchkeepers on the bridge, so essensially in charge of running the ship (warfare branch), in charge of departments (engineering, logistics, etc), navigate the ship, and basically they run the ship in its day-to-day operations while the enlisted carry it out. Great simplification, but yeah... thats what officers do.

    12. ErekoseDM on November 30, 2013

      - Will we be able to 'search for and recruit' our own named enlisted / officers and do a battle field promotion (in our own individual game instances)?

the promotions to circumvent the hard-coded 'factions' aspect to a degree, for when we want to play as a pirate, or whatever legitimate faction in the mandate.

      - How much time will we have to upgrade to our dream tiers?

      - Will we be able to add custom $ amounts in backer kit to upgrade tiers (from whatever we have currently), and utilize the current KS tiers?
or is it only the confirmed add-ons of the "name a _" add-ons mentioned in this update that will be available options on backerkit.

    13. Igor on November 30, 2013

will infantry receive experience from boarding operations like in UFO/XCOM games? Can i eventually have my own veteran / elite units instead of those i get from "Personal body-guard of Empress Catherine the Great"

    14. Igor on November 30, 2013

last video made me back you up :)))
when do you plan to go Beta or Early Access?

Cool info and nice to hear a bit of Kipling.

    16. Stavros Tsiakalos on November 30, 2013

This might sound silly, but what exactly will the responsibilities of an officer be? I'm not an army nut, so... :)
For example in BSG, would Chief Tyrol count as "enlisted" ?

    17. JuhoL - Virtuous Cossack Captain - WoOS on November 30, 2013

Sounds awesome! :) Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that come January the Brigadier tier hasn't been sold out too :D

As I said in the video comment: This. Will. Be. GLORIOUS!

    18. Robin Andersson on November 29, 2013

ah, well thats convenient, I am reluctant to go back on a pledge once made so I'll pawn off those extra copies on my brothers (both happen to like strategy/rpg games luckily)

I'll likely up to captain level once that backerkit store opens!

    19. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 29, 2013

      @Robin: We should clarify:

You can get digital add-ons for BackerKit, they are:

      $25 - name a marine
      $30 - name an enlisted/specialist
      $50 - design an officer
      $75 - design a captain

Yes, we are out of the $200 captain tier. But you can still design a captain and get him/her included in the great captain doc via the digital add-ons. That being said our BackerKit store will launch 1-2 weeks after Kickstarter, and you can mess with your pledge there. No need to deny your brothers Xmas gifts. You can always upgrade your pledge in January! Alternatively, if you took the $150 pledge, remember, all extra copies of the game from $150 and up include the $75 Cossack Captain tier. So you could do a deal with friends, or you could gift your brothers copies!

    20. Robin Andersson on November 29, 2013

just upped my pledge from 40 to 150... I'm sure my brothers will understand why their Christmas gifts are mysteriously cheap this year ;)

Cant help it, that design an officer reward was just too tempting to resist, Captain would have been nice but alas they have run out so officer will just have to do.

I just hope the customization options will be satisfiable, god knows I've seen enough 'customizable' rpg characters where all it amounts to is a different hair colour and style on a static 'doll'

so far from what I've seen that will not be the case here but likewise I will probably worry to no end until I see the finished product XD

What can I say, I'm a huge fan of making a rpg character 'personal' and the more options there are to make sure I'm not playing a cardboard cut-out the happier of a camper I will be

    21. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 29, 2013

@Sam: For now we have announced that you start with a frigate, gain access to a flotilla (3 capital ships) and finally once the player character attains the rank of flag officer, he/she may equip a full battle squadron (6 capital ships). Once you commission a flagship you may assign a captain as your 1st officer while you focus more on controlling your fleet (but you can still micro manage your ship if you prefer instead).

For your main star base you may assign a Home Fleet, a defensive battle squadron. You will also be able to assign ships to defend other star bases under your control but we are not ready to talk about the details there yet.

For an example of a mid to late game player battle squadron, take a look at http://yourcrew.mandategame.com/ and search for "order of battle"

      @James: You are welcome, sir!

Glad to hear about the information bombardment :D. I'm trying to decide if I want an officer or a captain. Do you have a rough idea of how many officers there will be on ships, from smallest to largest, and how many ships a player might get in a fleet?

    23. James Knight on November 29, 2013

      That sounds amazing, thank you.

    24. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 29, 2013

@James: We will bombard you with lore and backstory before you need to finish up your captain design. That way you can tie him/her to a specific event, a specific location etc. It will be a very cool experience, trust us on this ;)

    25. James Knight on November 29, 2013

You may have already answered this elsewhere, but will you be providing some kind of reference sheet of locations, factions, and other essentials needed for fleshing out a Captain worthy of the Captains Doc?

Dear god thank you for ethnicity. I really didn't want the Star Wars model where there were no women or minorities. Can't wait for this and so glad you guys got funded

    27. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 29, 2013

@Blake: Well, we are just entering pre-production. The textures on the ship designer demo are at AA quality but we plan to take them to AAA quality. The next few months we will figure out all the workflow and pipelines to optimize our production and minimize risk further.
@Paul-Arnaud: Your English is fine :)

We will not ask you to pay us extra for physical rewards. Instead you will be able to purchase physical rewards from the merchandise vendor that we select. Keep in mind that we will not settle for mediocre quality or high prices as we want these physical rewards to mirror the quality experience we are aiming to deliver you guys. E.g. a T-shirt should not turn grey after 10 washes etc.

If we sign a deal with a distribution partner to distribute physical boxes, we will offer our KS/PayPal/BackerKit backers the option to get physical box copies at cost + shipping. More on that as we get closer to launch, however :)

    28. Blake Skidmore on November 29, 2013

Latest update leaves me so excited! If what you guys are showing is a highly unpolished and unfinished product, then the finished product will blow me away! Keep up the good work gentlemen!

    29. Paul-Arnaud Lapeyre on November 29, 2013

Hi ! if you made a good deal for physical rewards, what level of pledge we need? (Approximately)

      (Sorry for my english)

    30. Perihelion Interactive LLC Creator on November 29, 2013

@Benjamin: We are in talks with several merchandise vendors to setup a way for you to acquire physical merchandise. As we will not be involved in the actual transaction (it will be between you and the merchandise vendor) we want to ensure
      a) high quality
      b) fair prices
      c) international shipping

Beyond that we will provide copyright notices so you can print your own T-shirts, posters etc if you prefer instead. Also, the $50 Arsenal Warden contains a huge number of ship sections which you will be able to use for non-commercial purposes or print out with a 3D printer. Likewise, we have a digital add-on, the character pack #3 which includes a bunch of rigged 3D characters from the game with textures, so you could print these as well. This could be useful for miniatures or pen&paper RPG games.

If you are thinking specifically about boxed copies of The Mandate, this is not something we as developers can commit to at this point. We know several backers want this, and we will look into possible distribution partners for physical copies, but this is still quite a way off anyway.

    31. Kahuna Kevin on November 29, 2013

Big thanks for the Deathfire shout out and anyone who joins us this late in the campaign! I'm backing both games because the world needs more strategic goodness and less button mashing.
