Introducing Garret, and community interaction + updates
Hello everyone... better yet, let's allow Garret to introduce himself:
As some of you have noticed, we’ve snuck out our first developer diary which introduces our Art Director, Garret AJ. You can find the video embedded right below here, on on YouTube. His portfolio is available right here for those who want to see more of his work.
We’ve addressed one of the most common questions asked to us by backers and prospective backers: “How are you going to make a game like this for $500,000?” You won’t find the full answer in this update, but it has been sent out in a press release to all major press sites -- you’ll also find it in the ‘Risks and Challenges’ section of the Kickstarter front page for The Mandate.
This update also includes some exciting news regarding physical rewards or merchandise. Once the campaign is funded we’ll make the necessary arrangements allowing you to print and produce your own The Mandate merchandise, by sending you high resolution digital designs and a copyright notice stating that we allow you to reproduce the designs.
Stats, updates, and how we’re getting on
Truthfully, we’re cautiously optimistic. The Mandate has a fast-growing community, and we’re currently working on an official forum to house you all. We’ve managed to raise over $45,000, from around 1,300 backers. On Steam Greenlight, we’re 56% of the way into the top 100, with over 15,000 unique visitors to the games page. Press coverage is also picking up across the board, with an influx of Russian backers today. Добро пожаловать!
As a response to some of the word-play (Tsar Wars, thanks Tun Kai Poh), we’ve created the ‘Imperial Propaganda Machine’, which allows you to deface and design your own message to a Mandate propaganda poster. These are then uploaded to our Imgur account, for sharing on Facebook. We can’t wait to see your designs, and we’ve made a gallery on Facebook to house the best ones. Who knows, maybe there will be a treat for our favourite spinners…
We’ve also listened carefully regarding the Russian accent for the original trailer. A few Russian backers have told us that Anastasia’s accent in Russian sounds unnatural to them. We will be working closely with the Russian community to improve the way the Russian language is represented in the game. Authenticity is very important to the Russian demographic, as it is to us. You are heard, and much appreciated.
For Spanish and English our direction was for something pronounced and rustic -- something dramatic with a clear Russian accent. We used the same voice actress for all three languages.
On the note of language, a little quip:
“I speak Spanish to God, Italian to Women, French to Men, and German to my Horse” - Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (1500 - 1558)
We’ve got a lot of feedback from the community regarding design implementations, and we’re constantly adding popular ones to our notes. Suggestions that fit soundly with our vision and are relatively uncomplicated to implement will be considered very carefully, so keep the feedback coming!
The community, and our relationship -- preparing your high-end tier rewards
Lastly, we want to talk about you guys. This isn’t a soppy obligatory thank-you, so keep reading! We are serious about engaging with the community both during and after Kickstarter. Through Kickstarter, we’re building a team -- you’re part of that team. We’ll be setting up dedicated sub-forums for each reward tier from $150 and above (but the general forums will be open to all). Any backer who was pledged to a particular reward tier will gain posting access to that sub-forum and can share ideas about their stories and designs with other backers for peer review to get feedback fore submitting their designs for tier rewards to our designers and writers.
This is not a method of keeping low-level backers away from high-level backers, and we’re not creating an exclusive club. The focus of this divide is merely so that people within their respective tier rewards can discuss their bespoke content for feedback before it gets sent to us.
We’ll be providing the relevant background information about the story and lore of The Mandate in order to aide you in your design plans for your officers, captains, Star Bases, mercenary corporations, etc, so that they fit in with the games lore. We’ll bring this up in a future update closer to the time.
On a final note regarding community integration, a letter from the High Order:
In light of the pressing circumstances facing the Mandate, and to honour the memory and sacrifice of Our late brother Prince Nicholas, who fell in battle defending Our empire from those who would divide and despoil it, We do command and desire the establishment of a new Order of Knighthood, to be named the Order of Nicholas; further, the dignities of this Order shall be granted to those who lend their support to the Mandate in this hour. Accordingly, it is Our wish and command that you be granted said dignities and accorded the rank of <Dame/Knight> of the Order of Nicholas.
Anastasia Romanova by the Grace of God holder of the Mandate, Empress of the United Colonies, Captain-Queen of the Romanov, to our trusty and well-beloved Captain <your name>, Greetings, whereas We have thought fit to nominate and appoint you to be a <Dame/Knight> of Our said Most Excellent Order of Nicholas, We do by these presents grant unto you the Dignity of an <Dame/Knight> of Our said Order and hereby authorise you to have, hold and enjoy the said Dignity and Rank of an <Dame/Knight> of Our aforesaid Order together with all and singular the privileges thereunto belonging or appertaining.
Given at our Court at Novy Petersburg under Our Genecode and Seal of Our said Order, this 7th day of October 3513.
What does this mean?
- The first 3000 backers will be enrolled as members of the Order
- You will all start at the same rank regardless of pledge tier
- Members of the order will receive preference with respect to selecting moderators for our forum
- Members of the order will receive a custom badge on the forums
- Your in-game captain characters will start with the Order which will confer certain gameplay bonuses at the start of the game (Regardless of whether you are a loyalist, a rebel or a pirate!)
- We will feature several other orders in the game and some will be historically accurate like the order of St Andrew which the Empress wears on her person while other orders will be fictional. We may introduce additional Orders throughout the Kickstarter campaign but the Order of Nicholas takes precedence above these other Orders.
