First survey out and signs of life

Hoi Chummers,

we have been slightly behind on our updates and surveys with all the exciting stuff going on with the new SR5 edition of the tabletop and the Shadowrun Universe site and all the 2013 - Year of Shadowrun action happening.

Well, here is a sign of life and some news.

First of all, our initial survey will go out today - so you should receive a mail from surveymonkey soonish. If not, please check your spam box or let us know here if you haven't gotten anything by end of the week.

The second news is about our delivery dates - we were aiming for May 2013, but we are going to postpone. For one, we need more time to make the product- we are a small team and we cannot just add more people to speed up with the limited budget we have. Further, our friends at Harebrained have announced they will release around that time and we absolutely do not want to get in their way - there are two great Shadowrun products out there and we don't want to have them compete. And with SR5 also coming out, there is enough Shadowrun goodness to fill your Summer and then some.

Which means we will move out into later this year, probably November. We of course apologize for the delay, but we have received a lot of feedback telling us to rather do a good game and take enough time than put out something second rate earlier. We hope you will agree and thank you for your understanding.

What that means for our beta date is not yet clear, but we will let you know as soon as we can.

Meanwhile we have finalized the plot and setting together with our friends at Catalyst to fit into the SR5 timeline and the events following the upcoming Stormfront book and combined it with our game requirements for the setting. We are quite excited by what we have come up with - it is not your run of the mill RPG story and it will in itself already be part of a major event in the Shadowrun Universe timeline. Let's just say we will start with a bang, not with a whimper ;)

That is it for now - remember to keep updated on the latest news for all things Shadowrun over at our joint website and join the forums there!

See you in the shadows...

I know I may be slightly late to the party here, but i haven't received a survey yet. Can I still get that?

    3. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 28, 2013

We aren't prepared to release any information related to the start of the Closed Beta yet, but we know that our fellow Chummers are anxious to hear about it and we'll make sure to share something on the topic as soon as we can.

    4. JC Stefansson on January 27, 2013

If you were to throw out a guess for when Closed Beta will begin, what would your rough estimate be?

    5. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 26, 2013

      Hello Locrum,

we are sorry about the confusion concerning the t-shirt designs. It is actually one of the first items dealt with in the current SRO survey FAQ that was compiled (see ). Left to right, top to bottom is exactly the way to go. As to the character names issue: We can't offer a solution yet but we know that a lot of backers would love to make sure they can get the streetname they want and we'll try to find a solution for this request.

    6. Locrum on January 25, 2013

The T-shirt portion was confusing because all I saw were designs. They weren't numbered or titled so I had to assume an order left to right, top to bottom. As for naming of the Epic items, that was hard because I have no idea if I'll get the name I want. Would be dissapointing for someone else to get a name and have my item named after them. I agree with most in that I would prefer delays if it help increase the quality of the game.

    7. REkz kaRZ on January 23, 2013

      Aha -- my survey was short b/c I'm not a $1k backer. :D
Nul sweat. Slot and run, chummers!

I would much rather you guys take your time and get the game where you want it to be than have a sub-optimal release. I have waited for years for a SR game, I can wait longer - I just don't want us fans disappointed. Maybe you could release a character generator at some just to give us something to play with?

    9. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 22, 2013

Well, we thought people would appreciate the chance to decide on the motives of the T-Shirts and the information we are gathering will help us to decide where to produce the swag and how much of it. We asked several other questions related to the production of the swag (e.g. names for the credits, names of the epic and legendary items etc.) too, but the survey became more elaborate the more rewards were concerned. For the lowest tiers it isn't doing a lot more than asking whether you'd like an achievement on, but even that was necessary due to privacy reasons. The longer surveys consist of a dozen pages but if there isn't as much information needed from your end to finalize the swag production, the survey of course ends up being shorter.

Now, back to a question a number of people were asking: Yes, the campaign book will be compatible with both SR 5 and SR 4 (think System Failure for SR 3/4) and the SRO plot will be part of the Shadowrun 5 story arc! :)

    10. REkz kaRZ on January 22, 2013

I filled out the survey. Wasn't much of a survey, more of a pitch hitting us up for more backing $$$.
My survey said something like, "Did you give X amount of money? Do you want to give more? Any comments?"
But despite this strange survey, I'm still hopeful.

    11. Stahlseele on January 21, 2013

Are you sure he ain't working for you guys? O.o

    12. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 21, 2013

As the backers will enter the closed beta, reserving user names will probably not be necessary.

Also, ol' friend Sangius did some poking again and compiled a FAQ about the survey:

Excellent survey - I just can't wait to create my character!
Do we get to reserve names, or did I miss that part?

    14. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 21, 2013

You guys pretty much mirror our thoughts in this respect. In the end, we decided to go for longer development and thus a better gaming experience.
@Stavros: We are not asking for the exact shipping address in this survey. It is not the final reward survey. Feel free to fill it out (all you need to tell us the continent you are living us, so that we can decide where to best produce the swag). We'll gather the shipping addresses later on.

How many slots come with the $120 version? Trying to decide if I want to trade the miniature in for more slots or not.

    16. Lloyd Calvin on January 21, 2013

I support this move. I want a better game, not a sooner game. Hell I play so many other things I'm gonna have to find more room for this...... Table top Shadowrun, DnD3.5, Battletech, WoW, Mechwarrior online. And now I'm waiting on SR returns and this one and Planetary Annihilation..... No sleep for me.....

    17. Pyradox on January 21, 2013

You could just release the beta at the expected time and the full game later. It's pretty common practice for MMOs to do that.

    18. Jason Hayes on January 21, 2013

I was sort of hoping the two Shadowrun games wouldn't come out at the same time, so this is a blessing in disguise. But I totally agree, take the time make a kickass game.
And yeah I completely understand, we aren'[t ordering a product off a website, we're funding development of something. That means risks and almost always malleable deadline, most projects I've backed even ones from experienced developers and publishers have had some delays happen.

    19. Chris on January 21, 2013

That doesn't seem too bad for a release push back. Never seen a developer able to avoid pushing back a game yet so I can't say I'm all too surprised. Hopefully the beta starts a good distance before that though so you have a real chance to fix the bugs likely to come up before the release of the game.

    20. Martin Nicolas on January 21, 2013

Six month, half a year, you're serious? This project had rare updates and now for strategical reason to forego competition with other Shadowrun games it's getting postponed.
Leaves a bitter taste to me, still all the best for development - hope the beta arrives earlier!

    21. Stavros Tsiakalos on January 21, 2013

I can't fill out a survey now for November. My address is 99% likely to change in the next few months :(

    22. Stahlseele on January 21, 2013

      Survey arrived, filled out.

    23. Shaun Huang on January 21, 2013

Better late than bad, that's for sure. Though I think you should aim for releasing close beta LONG before release, giving you plenty of time/flexibility to do improve to the point where when you go public. So that you can attract more players after release right off the bat.

    24. Gabriel Rotar

      Awesome Awesome Awesome.
Keep up the great work :D

    25. Jo Fl Vo on January 21, 2013

I cannot wait till it's done.
AND I'm looking forward to get my rewards.

But take your time, and make a good game. It's better to do it once good, than doing it twice.
Warum schreib ich eigentlich net Deutsch mit euch?

    26. Traxx Steiner on January 21, 2013

      Hoi chummers,

do not repeat the mistake and build your expectations upon the image you got from the SRR project. It was already stated several times, that both projects lay miles apart from each other in terms of budget and manpower.

Though everyone of us is hungering for updates it would not make sense to present any with simply zero new information being carried by them. Visit the forum, there you can open up a thread, and if there are information to share the admins or devs actively seek to provide some solid intel.

You heard the man pointing out the arguments for the delay, which looking upon objectively make a lot of sense. In the meantime play some more virtual or even better live sessions with your chummers...

Utilize your waiting time to already build your character, which you will probably play within the SRO world and foster your live team with their chars around you. So wen the time will finally come, you will have already your winning team in place...

    27. Danton McCreadie on January 21, 2013

Thank you very much for the update. =)

    28. Alejandro Kondrasky on January 21, 2013

What every you do, please :

      * No flufly pets! No pets at all if possible.
      * No silly rainbow dash customs -.-... Slick, elegant, punk, hardcore or what ever, but no freaking pumking, panda or penguin custom! I truly hate when well themed mmo's like this one do this things just to get a few bucks or please the audience.

I know you are commited to what SR really is and surely you know it better than me. But i needed to say it...

    29. Cliffhanger Productions Creator on January 21, 2013

      @Blackstaff Thanks :)
@Otto: Yes, if you have already done so. But you can still can, simply browse to and add the additional money via Paypal (if you plan on doing so for sure, you might as well answer 'yes')
@Daton: It sure is, at Just keep us informed somehow and we'll send you the link for the higher tier-survey. Thanks! :)

And thanks to all for your patience. We hope the change in schedule will end up working best for all of us (for us as it gives us more time to produce a better game with the team and you by having more fun later on)

    30. Blackstaff on January 21, 2013

@Cliffhanger I've just sent my survey and I've been voluntarily lax with the names for my epic and legendary items. I think it's best if you choose yourself the precise type of items it should cover in the big category I've chosen (software for both of them) : attack program, cyberdeck or whatever you need.

    31. nadeem on January 21, 2013

done and hope to see beta soon

    32. Otto T M Tormented Ninja of the O-Order on January 21, 2013

I would like a clarification on one of the questions. in the survey.
"4. Have you ordered a Shadowrun Online T-shirt?"
Should I answer yes if I want a Shadowrun t-shirt or if I have already order one?

    33. Danton McCreadie on January 21, 2013

Is it still possible to increase my pledge? I plan on doing so on the 30th when I get paid.

    34. Wes Evans on January 21, 2013

I think this is a great idea -- the delay -- since you can take advantage of SRR being released and what will surely be a ton of UGC once the first storylines and DLC is played through. Thanks for the update, glad this is the route you're taking.

    35. J.R. Riedel on January 21, 2013

A small point, I just got the first survey and it didn't actually have a screen to review your answers before it was submitted. You might want to include that (if possible) in the future.

    36. Atarun
      on January 21, 2013

I second @Craig Weston! A character exporter (or sheet) would be AWESOME!

    37. J.R. Riedel on January 21, 2013

I definitely expected the schedule delay, and I'm cool with a later release.
Remember, as long as you keep us informed most of us will be understanding (and we'll probably jump on those who arent) ;)

    38. Craig Weston on January 21, 2013

It would be aswesome if you gave some way to convert from online to tabletop. going back is problematic, but a character exporter would be fantastic.

    39. Industrial Scribe on January 21, 2013

All projects have delays and Kickstarters doubly so. Without extra funding you were never going to be able to add quality team members so a delay is the best way to launch a solid game. Any news on when other (non-software) rewards will ship and if the "SRO CAMPAIGN BOOK for Shadowrun 4th edition" will now be updated to be a 5th edition book?

    40. Bernd Perplies on January 21, 2013

Of course, better a good game later, than a bad game too early! And I guess it is also a problem of working in concert with Catalyst Games and Harebrained Schemes in the US. Making a game of your own is one thing. But coordinating it with two other products and companies may be quite time consuming.

    41. Martin Breiner
      on January 21, 2013

On my behalf You have all time you will need to get a decent game out! :)

    42. Bobracha on January 21, 2013

Doh, just read it over again, not sure how I missed the part about the beta the first time through.

    43. Missing avatar

      ddbelyea on January 21, 2013

Delaying to make a game better is never a bad thing. Pushing back the beta makes sense as well. While a beta is supposed to be glitchy and unfinished, there are a lot of people who will play the beta, think it isn't good enough, and then give up on the game.

If it takes another year to release that would be fine with me. So long as it gets out while 5th addition rules are still fresh enough that people still care, but established enough that people know what is going on.

    44. Atarun
      on January 21, 2013

@Bernd Perplies: in my experience, most Kickstarter project owners wildly underestimate the time it actually takes them to complete. By a mile. Or rather a few thousand miles.

Since I have never counted on a Kickstarter project for a specific celebration, I do not really mind the delays themselves... but the lack of updates, man, that drives me nuts. It seems the vast majority of Kickstarter project owners are so vastly out of touch with the backer community (if not mankind as a whole) that they actually think it's better to say nothing and let everyone worry and think the worst than to come clean early and keep in touch... I'd rather think they are that irrational than that they just do not care about what we think and feel at all.

    45. Tubbster on January 21, 2013

Indeed, a delay from May to November isn't just a 3-week-delay. But if it helps to convert additional features demanded by the SR-community, I will be more than fine. I see that SR:O wants to cope with the rest of Shadowrun Universe. And that's great!

    46. Sangius on January 21, 2013

Personally, I must say I am glad about the change of schedule. That way, I'll be able to give both games the attention they deserve and still work on my Master thesis ... heh! Looking forward to see more of the engine and how the actual combat system works out.

    47. Bernd Perplies on January 21, 2013

I just read an article about Kickstarter projects that start with high hopes and than reality shows, that their time schedule was impossible to hold. I hope you didn't suspect this delay already last summer. I mean from "May" to "probably November" is quite a step. And let's talk about this "probably" in November... Nevertheless I hope for a great game and wish you some month full of productivity! (But please don't hide behind other projects. We supported this one, not an SR5 release or some offline SR videogame.)

    48. Blackstaff on January 21, 2013

That seems like the right decision to make with the release of SRR at the same time. There will be Wasteland 2 at the end of this year though, but you can't avoid competition.

In fact, I can say that I am quite happy with that, cause I was already worrying how playing SRR and participating actively in the beta of SRO would turn out. :)

I concur on a little bit of more frequent updating by the way, even though I can understand that you are really busy.

    49. Stahlseele on January 21, 2013

      "our friends at Catalyst"
so, i guess you won't be needing any enemies then?

    50. Atarun
      on January 21, 2013

I definitely would rather you take the necessary time and make a great game than rush some mangled mess out.
Just do please keep us in the loop. Pretty please with cherry on the top! ;)
