About this project

What is "New Body: South Africa to Baltimore"?

New Body: South Africa to Baltimore will enable a culmination of new art work, reflecting on life and the altered landscapes of rural South Africa whilst working from a studio in Baltimore.  After almost 4 years residing in rural South Africa, I am ready to dig deeper into my art process.  My studio work, investigations & creations will be made in conjunction with my year-long, low-residency graduate studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art where I will be working towards a Master of Arts in Art Education.  The premise of making my own artwork alongside my studies in art education is to support the theme that art making and art teaching are not mutually exclusive paths.  This long-awaited body of artwork will commence with my move to Baltimore on 15 June 2012 and will complete by the end of July 2013.

The Ideas behind the Art:

I was asked "if you had unlimited time in your studio, what questions would you be asking?"  Acknowledging this question has helped me to reformulate where I am going as I set forward on the path to becoming a fully practising Artist Educator.  Here are some of the topics I will be covering in my artwork in the coming 14 months:

* Processing an exploration through paint of how humans interact with nature and documenting the competition between the two and the indifference one often has for the other.  This could be as small an affectation as a shopping cart found in a nature reserve or the regular intervals of trees planted on a farm road, finding beauty in the comparison, the contrast, the humor, or the tragedy.

* Better understanding where I fit in as an outsider/foreigner in the South African context as an American and gauging what is “mine” to remark upon visually. By confronting this topic, I can more readily take risks to comment on the visual, social, traditional and historical landscapes of South Africa. Working from a studio in Baltimore will provide the distance and perspective needed to best understand this dynamic.

* Sources of inspiration may include: African textile designs, the patterning of corrugated metal against vivid sky-scapes, manipulations made to the raw landscape, the thick haze of coal smoke on the horizon, “pop-art” wallpaper applications in shacks, to name a few.

What will you be making/painting/drawing exactly?

My own artistic process always stems from visual research, collecting images, storing up small sketches and dreaming up possible compositions and concepts.  After I embrace a few new ideas, I set out to paint - not always knowing what the end result may be.  The freedom to openly create is something I strive to test.  Sometimes I may test out new materials - painting on silk instead of canvas, using raw earth pigments instead of pre-made paint or incorporating textiles to create a mixed media piece, as examples - but all of that is dependent on what it is I am trying to say.  By supporting me on Kickstarter, you have a sense that I am on the edge of knowing what I will be making, as I embark on my studio time in Baltimore.  I encourage you to join me on this journey as I explore the complexities of my background, my context and the visual stimuli of South Africa in this new body of work.

How will Kickstarter help?

Through donations using the Kickstarter platform, I will be able to raise the costs needed to purchase materials in creating a new body of work.  Your pledge will go towards helping finance costs such as canvas, wood, paint, and mediums.   At a minimum, $2,000 is what will be needed to support the creation of art work over a 14 month time frame - June 2012 through August 2013.  Extra funds raised will help towards the ongoing creation of work and the ability to choose higher grades of canvas, where possible, and to enable the use of a broader range of materials.

Please note, I have added a recommended donation addition at each level for shipping costs as they are not included in my overall Art Material Budget.

You will be Rewarded for your Pledge:

For every pledge level, there is a reward offered as a token of appreciation.  Regardless of which level you choose to pledge, you will receive something original and unique and specific to this project's outcomes.  Here are some of the rewards offered (keep in mind sizes and quantities are contingent on the level pledged):

* Limited-edition art digital prints from 2012-2013, signed by the artist.  At higher levels, these are printed on archival, artist-quality paper.

* Limited edition set of folded notecards with the artist's 2012-2013 work printed on the cover in a set of 8 with 4 unique designs, envelopes included (photo below is an example, not an actual version of the product).  At higher pledge levels, these come enclosed in a quality, hand-crafted Shweshwe pouch with a beaded enclosure.  Shweshwe was originally an imported Indigo design from Germany that came to South Africa in the 1700s and quickly became part of traditional and ritual dress for several indigenous cultures.  All Shweshwe presses have since been relocated to South Africa and the print is offered in monochrome Red, Blue or Brown and sometimes with an added splash of yellow.  An example of this print and the pouch design in blue can be seen at the very bottom of this screen.

* Complete catalogue of artwork produced between 2012-2013 in PDF format.  At higher levels, donors will receive a printed version enclosed in a Shweshwe pouch (as described above).

* Water-based monoprints on artist-quality paper, created between 2012-2013, signed by the artist.  Monoprints will be printed using a variety of water-based media, such as watercolors, watercolor pencils, gouache, and aquarelle crayons on a silkscreen.  The effect and the process is much like painting, although the original image is painted onto the screen (not the paper).  With monoprinting only one true print is achieved, meaning each print is completely original.  The 4th image from the top is an example of a monoprint.

* For donors at the highest level, original artworks from 2012-2013 on quality Arches cold press paper are available on a limited basis.

*** NOTE: All paintings/drawings/prints featured here are PAST work and will not be included in the 2012-2013 portfolio.  Only new work created in 2012-2013 will be included in the rewards.
