About this project
Join us as we set out on the road and travel the country In Search of the Truth!
We are seeking to raise $75,000 to start the In Search of the Truth tour of the 50 United States before the presidential election. The heart of this transmedia project is a portable, inflatable Truth Booth—a video recording booth that invites the public to record two-minute videos completing the statement, "The truth is...."
Our goal is to amplify the voices of the public and provide an interactive platform for the nation to share their thoughts, ideas, dreams and truths about the upcoming election, or anything that inspires them. We believe, it is important, that there's a space to hear directly from one another at the moment when this nation chooses it's next leader.
As we've travelled the booth accross the globe, received over 5000 statements, ranging from “The truth is Legos” to “The truth is I’m proud to be Afghan,” to “The truth is I’m a tomboy and I hate pink and I hate princesses”. We are excited to come to your state, and hear your truths at this critical moment.
For as many people and places there are in this great country, there are just as many truths. Join us in telling, sharing, and hearing what The Truth Is...
Who is the CAUSE COLLECTIVE?
We are a team of artists, designers and ethnographers creating innovative art in the public realm. For the past 10 years, we’ve enlivened public spaces by creating dynamic conversations between issues, sites, and audiences. By exploring ideas that shape society, we work to add the "public" back into public space and art.
Our Collective crew for the Truth Booth's 2016 U.S. tour is Ryan Alexiev, Hank Willis Thomas, Jim Ricks, and Will Sylvester.
We live in Brooklyn, a coastal town in California, and Dublin, Ireland—and have roots in Philly, Phoenix, Oakland, San Francisco, and western Massachusetts.
What is In Search of the Truth?
In Search of the Truth is an inflatable temporary public sculpture—an iconic, 14-feet high speech bubble. Inside is a video recording booth where the public can record two-minute videos as they complete the statement, "The truth is..." The responses we've gathered so far are humorous, confessional, empowering, vulnerable, poetic, and revealing. By embarking on a fifty-state tour, we aim to represent and celebrate the United States' diverse people, cultures, and locations.
The project includes a dedicated website for expanded audiences to track our U.S. tour, and view categorized videos. Throughout this long-term project, the video footage will be compiled and edited into a video installation to be exhibited in galleries, museums, and public viewings. It is our hope that viewers, as we have, realize that there are common things that people struggle with. That things like loss, love, hunger, and the feeling that you are worth more than society suggests are universal. That we all share truths.
Over the past five years, we have taken the Truth Booth to Ireland, Afghanistan, and South Africa, as well as select locales the U.S. (Brooklyn, Charlottesville, Chicago, Cleveland, Miami, Palo Alto, and Washington D.C.). But there are many more truths to find and we feel as if there is no better time than NOW to seek those truths out in the U.S.
When We Last Attempted To Follow The Election
Traveling the United States with a inflatable video booth is a huge undertaking. We are coming to the Kickstarter community to help us to actualize this goal. By starting with a goal of $75,000, we are looking for your support to get us on the road. We plan to focus on swing states first, to explore how distinct and divergent politics shape notions of place and identity. But please, if you have a suggest for a location send us a message. And if you pledge at one of our $10k reward tiers we will gladly bring the booth to YOU!
To compliment the tour, we will create a interactive website to allow everyone access to interact with the tour, whether you are able to join us in person or not. The website will include truths from the travelled locations, as well as a map of where we've been and where we are going.
But this project is much more than a tour and a website. It is also a documentary art project. The videos we collect will go into creating longer form videos for exhibitions. We will be writing about and photographing the places we travel to, and documenting what we learn and the people we meet. Your pledges will be a huge part of helping us to purchase hard drives, memory cards, rent cloud space, as well as work in a creative space to produce a book, videos, and create an exhibition.
We Want to Travel to All 50 States!
For every $10,000 dollars we raise after our goal, we'll add another state to the tour. We want you to make this a 50 STATE TOUR! Spread the word! Tell everyone you know: the Truth Booth wants to hear from YOU!
Quotes From The Truth Booth
"The truth is not to be discovered because it was there before we were born. It hid itself when we were born and it only comes out once we are dead. I am nearly dead so the truth will shortly emerge" - Ireland 2011
"The truth is i don't think i have enough money to finish college." - Hofstra University 2012
"The truth is that Afghanistan will be all right one day. Then people will live together in a free and healthy environment again. I want to make clear that if all Afghans join hand-in-hand and raise capacity and the level of knowledge they can defeat poverty and solve the problems that exist in our country and rebuild the nation. Then all our problems will end. Thank you." - Afghanistan 2013
"The truth is um I've been dealing CRPS Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome since I was 10. and now I'm 14 and i am done with it. I've come to realize that I don't want to have to deal with it anymore. Now I'm here in Cleveland Ohio at the Cleveland clinic for regional pain and they've gotten me from a wheel chair to walking well hardly walking in a matter of 3 weeks. Now I'm staying an extra week so get the extra touches put back in place and I'm really excited to go back to my normal life. So the truth is you never should give up because we all have a story and people don't know that story until you actually tell them and your a fighter and you just gotta fight until you get what you deserve. So that is the truth for me" - Cleveland 2014
"The truth is that I'm still 11 years old but I really do believe in unicorns. I know I sound super crazy but I believe unicorns are real, also mermaids, also fairies, and all of those sort of things. I love magic. You can't take that from me. I also love the Percy Jackson series and I am never going to stop loving them no matter what my mom says." - Miami 2014
"My truth is that my father died a year ago, a vietnam vet from agent orange exposure and we miss him a lot and wish he was here. My other truth is I've been separated from my husband for 4 your long years and they have been the hardest and most difficult of my life and I would give anything for us to get back together again because I still love you Herman. You're the love and my life and me and our daughter miss you lots. Thats my truth. That's all I got to say." - Brooklyn 2015
Risks and challenges
We can honestly say that this is our most ambitious effort to date. We are embarking on a U.S. tour, something that none of us have ever done. Inherently there is the risk that this might be too ambitious.
But we figure "Why not?!"
We see our biggest challenge as being able to arrange the tour itself. As we start to fundraise we are also reaching out to our network, trying to determine the the best place to take the Truth Booth in each state; to make sure we place the Truth Booth in the best location possible. Determining if we have enough funding and resources to do all 50 states. How do we get from point A to B, how many people do we need, where are they going to sleep, can we hire people, can we pay ourselves? So many questions run through our minds.
The road itself presents a challenge. Making sure we are on schedule, automotive woes, and staying healthy are a few challenges that come up when traveling. We also face the health and safety issues of the Truth Booth itself. Because it is a inflatable, we will have to regularly check the booth and make sure it doesn't get any holes or isn't vandalized. Making sure the electrical and computer equipment are in working order from place to place as well as making sure the footage is safe and backed up everyday.
All of us are working Artists with obligations outside of the collective. Our own projects and exhibitions could present challenges in time And as human beings we know life comes with challenges. But we are dedicated to touring the booth to as many places as we can possibly afford to in order to get as many thoughts, perspectives, and revelations of the truth as we can possibly collect. To make sure we are best representing what the world sees as the truth is.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
