Documenting Life in the Bush
This summer I’ll be documenting life in the Alaskan bush through the eyes of a fly fishing guide and filmmaker/photographer working at a wilderness fly-out sport fishing lodge. Each morning, loaded with Digital SLR camera equipment, I'll board a bush plane to explore remote river systems loaded with salmon and bears and some of the best wild rainbow trout fishing found anywhere in the world!
Exploring the Alaskan Wilderness
Over the four month season I'll capture the experience of flying in bush planes, jet boating, rafting remote rivers, and exploring the Alaskan wilderness in full High Definition. I'll combine the best footage of the season with stories about life in the Alaskan bush told by fishing guides, bush pilots, lodge owners, staff and clients into an insightful and entertaining documentary called “BushLife”.
Bristol Bay Sport Fishing
Located in the heart of the Bristol Bay region this lodge is one of numerous sport fishing operations threatened by the impending “Pebble Mine”. Bristol Bay is home to the most prolific sockeye salmon runs left in the world. Sport, commercial and subsistence fisheries in this region generate approximately $440 million each year and provide jobs for some 12,500 people in Southwestern Alaska.
The Pebble Mine
This area holds the second largest deposit of copper, gold, and molybdenum ever discovered with an estimated worth of over $300 billion. Two mining companies have proposed a massive open-pit and under-ground mining operation at the headwaters of two of Bristol Bay’s primary sockeye rivers. Our lodge is on one of these proposed rivers. The proposed “Pebble Mine” presents a direct threat to us and an enormous threat to this area’s salmon-bearing rivers and the people who depend on them.
Living the Bush Life
Having worked at other sport fishing lodges in Alaska I can say that I thoroughly enjoy life in the bush. It’s a unique experience: other than the lodge, you don’t see civilization for four months! You don’t have to deal with cars, traffic jams, cell phones, or really anything other than exploring the wilderness, taking people fishing and having a truly great time doing it.
Not that it’s a walk in the park: guiding in Alaska is certainly not for everyone. Prolonged exposure to the elements day after day, exhaustion, constant human interaction from the time you wake up until you go to bed, and the added challenge of living and working in close proximity with a small group of people can at times be overwhelming. But the rewards far outweigh the cost: Alaska is a truly amazing, wild place, an outdoorsman’s paradise and the angler’s ultimate playground!
How The Funds Will Be Used?
The target funding goal for this campaign is set at $5,000. Funds raised by this campaign will be used to purchase the required HD DSLR camera equipment ($5-10k) as well as the Kickstarter rewards (DVD, BluRay Discs, Photo Prints, Posters, etc). Additional funding would be extremely helpful to purchase accessories such as lenses, memory cards, batteries, an underwater housing, external hard drives, etc. Funds raised above this goal will also be used for post-production expenses needed to produce the documentary, so please don't stop pledging once the goal is reached!!
How Does Kickstarter Work?
Project creators (such as me) submit creative projects that need a “kickstart” of capital to get them going. People (such as you) with an interest in the project can “donate” funds to the project in exchange for receiving “perks” or “rewards”. Perks for this project include media products related to the project (DVD, BluRay, Photo Prints, and Posters) and guided fishing trips in the Great Lakes region where I guide for steelhead and brown trout.
All or Nothing!
Kickstarter is an “All Or Nothing” funding scheme which means if the target funding goal isn’t reached, the project isn’t financed, and no one is charged anything! That means if you make a pledge now, your card won't be charged unless the funding goal is reached! If you can't make a pledge now, Kickstarter can send you a reminder email later! Please help me realize my dream and be part of a cool, fun project! Any amount helps! Thank you for your support!
