UPDATE: Funding reached and STRETCH-GOAL!
Only two days into the campaign and the project has been funded! Thank you everyone who has made this possible.
We're not done yet, though. The more money we raise, the easier it is to get this book out there. Therefore:
New stretch goal: $6,500.
If we can reach $6,500, I will write a special short story, with illustrations, taking place in the world of The Gem People. This story will be made available to everyone who has contributed over $25.
I'm the father of three amazing girls. My oldest has just started elementary school. On top of worrying about how she'd do on schoolwork and hoping she didn't pee her pants in front of the class, I had a deeper concern.
The overriding message our society gives females is that their worth is based on how they look. Forget how smart they are, or how talented or caring. It's all about appearances.
Up to this point, my daughter didn't have the slightest trace of self-consciousness about her looks. She's bubbly, brilliant, and uninhibited. But I realized this was about to change. I was sending her into a world of photoshopped magazine covers, anorexic supermodels, and dolls with proportions so ridiculous only a mutant could match them. We're a society that largely treats women as objects to be consumed.
This was the original inspiration for The Gem People. I felt this concept needed to be explored in a YA novel.
The story has evolved since then, as any story should. While the end product is a fun, engaging adventure set in a fantasy world, at its heart it is a tale about the dangers of using others to fulfill personal appetites.
Like every other student on Flintchip, 14-year-old Cole Davenport has spent his life mining in dark, dreary tunnels. One day, however, he makes a jaw-dropping discovery—eight people made of jewels sleeping deep inside the mountain. Left by an ancient, powerful race known only as the Engineers, Cole soon learns that the Gem People have a special purpose—one that might change Flintchip forever.
If Cole is to protect them, however, he must fight off the adults in his town, journey to far-off Thumbspeake, go to battle with a powerful nation of marauding merchants known as the Train Lords, and even fight off the toughest enemy of all...
The Gem People offers a poignant variation of the increasingly-popular steam-punk genre, exploring the loneliness that comes with going against the crowd and the danger of using others to fulfill personal appetites.
I am using this Kickstarter primarily to raise money for marketing and distribution. This includes advertising on various online platforms, the creation and maintenance of a webpage, payment for the programmer, publicity, etc.
Risks and challenges
Good news -- the project is already about 80% completed. The book is undergoing one final revision, including the addition of illustrations and an updated cover, and should be completed in the next couple of months.
I suppose the biggest risk here is death by meteor strike or freak vending machine accident. In which case my loving widow will gladly return your money.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
