Prism Power: A Fan's Guide to Sailor Moon
To say that Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon changed the world would be an understatement. Both in terms of revenue and in its lasting influence on Japanese anime and manga, the effects of this series are still being felt today.
Sailor Moon's lasting legacy, however, will ultimately be with the hundreds, thousands of fans that it touched, and the impact the series and characters have had on their lives.
I am just one of those fans.
As for how this story about a clumsy young girl turned warrior of justice could reach the hearts of so many people -- across languages, cultures, and national boundaries -- I credit it to the deep and realistic world beautifully crafted by series creator, Naoko Takeuchi.
From character names to costume designs, real world locations to subtle visual cues, you can watch an episode, or read an act from the manga, over and over and still find something new each time through.
I first started my deep dive into the Sailor Moon universe two and a half years ago with the creation of my blog Tuxedo Unmasked -- a blog dedicated to bringing readers the real life stories behind the world of Sailor Moon.
Over 260 articles and 280,000 words later, and I feel like I've only scratched the surface.
The concept behind "Prism Power" is to take an exhaustive look at each anime episode and manga act in the first season, providing story summaries, trivia, cultural notes, and other information along the way.
Did you know...
- ...that the lead-in to Usagi's transformation sequence had to be changed after the first six episodes?
- ...that the bridal shop in Act 5 of the manga was based on a real store?
- ...how often the opening and ending sequences were updated throughout the first season?
- ...that the monsters appearing in episode 20 were an homage a 1960s manga?
- ...why Ami is worried she'll catch a cold from visiting the Hikawa shrine in episode 10?
This is just a small example of the information I intend to include along with the story summaries.
In addition to these focused story reviews, the book will also contain and exclusive interview with series director Junichi Sato. Read more about that in this update here!
Not quite sure if this is for you? Check out the Episode 1 review (PDF format) here to get a sense for what the book will be about!
The layout of the book and scoring system are still being finalized and are subject to change. However, the sample is representative of the content and general flow of the finished book.
Once completed, the book is estimated to be about 280 pages, which I hope will keep even the most die-hard Sailor Moon fan busy discovering new things about their favorite series.

This Kickstarter will be used to fund the creation of art for the book, to pay for an editor to go through the manuscript and clean up the text, and to cover printing and other production-related costs. Here's a breakdown on where the money's going:
Risks and challenges
Risks to this project are, in my opinion, are fairly minimal. Roughly 30% of the book has already been written, and much of the prep work already done.
I have already made arrangements with the artists, proofreader, and the book printer, so we should be ready to go shortly after this project gets funded.
The biggest risk this project faces would be if the rights-holders of Sailor Moon were to challenge the legal standing of the book. Considering there are multiple other fan-published books on Sailor Moon already on the market, and that commentary and criticism is protected under fair-use, I believe the risk of this is low.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
