As a leader in technology with almost 20 years of experience in system design and network implementation, I am driven by intellectual curiosity to provide a positive impact on society. After my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2009, I began working with my family to keep him constantly occupied and his mind stimulated. Although he never became proficient in using a computer, even before his cognitive impairment, he surprisingly showed great interest in using an iPad. However, he easily became lost and confused on the iPad, which required us to assist him all the time. This inspired me to explore ways to simplify his iPad experience.
After an exhaustive search, I could not find a comprehensive tool that targeted his needs. I used my own experience and knowledge in the IT industry to fill this void by building a multi-functional app that is extremely easy for anyone to use, including individuals with cognitive impairments. With this app, my father would be able to train his brain, maintain a schedule and entertain himself independently.
Much progress has been made over the last couple decades regarding the research of the human brain. Unfortunately, we still do not have a cure for many cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia. According to an article in The Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences entitled "The Dynamic Brain: Neuroplasticity and Mental Health", the brain can basically restructure itself when challenged with new stimuli regardless of age. This means that with the proper exercise, the brain has the ability to become more active and efficient. The term that neuroscientists use to refer to this ability is “neuroplasticity”, which is continuously being researched to understand how to reactivate or deactivate areas of the brain that are damaged. The Clevermind team is applying this research in the development of our app.
Over the last few months, we have been hard at work designing and building the core foundation of the Clevermind iPad app. This has prepared us to launch our Kickstarter campaign so that we can take our prototype to production with your help.
Imagine a single app that your parents or loved ones, who have shown declining cognitive ability, could interact with using both voice and touch. This app would allow them to stay up-to-date with current events, stay on a schedule, stimulate their brain, play games, read books, watch movies, and easily connect with friends and family. Once your parents or loved ones are set up with this app, it will not only improve their quality of life, it will also improve your quality of life. Everyone’s situation is different, but just imagine what you could do with those few extra minutes or hours in your day! This app will give you the confidence of knowing that the ones you care about are exercising their brain and are no longer simply watching TV, or staring out the window while in need of constant attention.
The goal of Clevermind is to create a platform for people who are aging and/or suffering from cognitive impairment diseases such as Alzheimer's or Dementia. Research shows that certain types of mental exercise can enhance brain health and function.
The Clevermind iPad app will offer cognitive therapy, social interaction, patient history and assessment data for trending. It is anticipated that upon final release, the Clevermind iPad app will become a significant part of research studies and clinical trials. The ultimate goal is to improve cognitive health in elderly patients and to potentially supplement the standard plan of care for Alzheimer’s patients.
Using an Apple TV and Air Play on the iPad you will be able to project the app to a big screen TV for use in front of a room of people or just to make things even bigger. Here is one of the games that we built into the app!
We have a dedicated team based in the Chicago metropolitan area that is hard at work building the Clevermind iPad app. Over the past few months, we have designed, redesigned and re-imagined this app, pouring countless hours into thinking about the unique experience of its users, the technical aspects of the project and the delivery of the app at an affordable price point. We have been working with neurologists, psychologists, general practitioners, nursing home staff, nurses and home caregivers to identify the needs and requirements for the Clevermind iPad app.
Phase I: Release Date - June 2013
Initial Funding Target of $10,000 will enable us to release the app with this core functionality:
- Core foundation with big button links to popular websites, social connections, movies, music, and games
- Speech recognition and interaction using our custom programmed module: “MY Intelligent Robotic Assistant” (MYIRA™)

What if we exceed our Initial Funding Goal?
The Clevermind iPad app will be available in the App Store™ in June 2013, provided we achieve our initial funding goal. Depending on the extent to which we exceed our initial goal, we will be able to fast-track the phases of development and we would plan to release this app across multiple platforms. Each game and brain exercise that we develop will be its own individual app that we will incorporate into Clevermind. Each phase requires increased design and engineering time and the need to hire more developers. At the same time, we are working with numerous doctors from leading hospitals to establish an advisory board that helps steer the direction of Clevermind iPad app development.
Phase II: Stretch Goal 1 - $50,000
- Progress reporting and graphing
- Basic data collection and tracking stored locally
- Simplified experience of Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Improved speech recognition and interaction

On which platforms will the Clevermind iPad app be available?
Initially we are developing the app for the Apple iPad 2(or newer) and iPad Mini (versions running iOS 5 and newer); we'll be releasing Android and Microsoft Windows RT versions later this year.
What is the difference between MYIRA and Siri?
MYIRA or MY Intelligent Robotic Assistant, is based on an open-source speech engine developed by a university project. The voice dictionary is stored locally in the app, which does not require an Internet connection to function. The Apple iOS Siri requires an Internet connection to function because the voice dictionary is stored in Apple’s cloud servers.
What languages will the Clevermind iPad app support?
Initially we are developing the app in English, but we plan to offer multi-language support, such as Spanish, in a later phase of our development plan.
How does Clevermind deal with privacy issues?
We take privacy very seriously at Clevermind. We want to make it easy to control the privacy of each individual who will be using the app. A portion of the Kickstarter funds will be used to make the privacy controls in our app even more intuitive and robust.
What about shipping for the rewards merchandise?
If you make a pledge for rewards that require shipping, please be aware that there will be an additional charge for shipping the merchandise to you based on your location so please don't forget to add shipping to your pledge.
Disclaimer: The Clevermind iPad app does not cure Alzheimer's disease or Dementia and it may not be effective for seriously impaired individuals.
Risks and challenges
In establishing our timeline we acknowledge the existence of many risks. We are putting the Clevermind iPad app through as rigorous a testing period as possible to eliminate any unexpected bugs before we submit to the App Store.
Another risk is that Apple does not approve the app in a timely manner. And another challenge that we have already faced involves the limitations of the Apple Terms of Service which govern the launching of native apps. Finally, the speech recognition engine presents yet another challenge. It is stored locally and requires much engineering time to make it work within our requirements. Speech recognition engines often have delays in processing the requests and providing responses. We are focusing a significant amount of development time to optimizing both the quality and sound of the speech recognition engine.
We will be providing progress updates on a regular basis to keep all of our Kickstarter supporters well informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
