"The game is for those people that like the Resistance, that like the Coup. They are really gonna love this game!" — Dan King aka The Game Boy Geek
"Swords and Bagpipes is a very neat social deduction game that I actually really like! ... It's not just "are you a werewolf?", "are you a spy?" type of deduction. There is politicking that goes on!" — Rick Perez from Let's Level Up!
Swords and Bagpipes is a game of social deduction, tactics and... betrayal! Heroism goes side by side with treachery. You take on the role of a Scottish clan leader during the medieval War of Independence.
English forces invade your country. You have to choose: either you support Scotland in the fight for freedom... or you just betray other clans to gain money and power. Yet, be warned: every other clan leader is free to make the same decision!
We are proud of the fact that half a year ago Swords and Bagpipes was successfully published in Russia with the help of a local crowdfunding campaign. Now our heart's goal is to bring Swords and Bagpipes to boardgamers all around the world!
The rules of Swords and Bagpipes were created with the famous Prisoner’s Dilemma in mind. When you betray others, you become richer. This drives you closer to your personal victory. However, if Scotland suffers an ultimate defeat, victory conditions change! The player who betrayed less becomes the winner. As a result, you have to balance on a thin edge of your and other players' interests!
TEN stretch goals are achieved! Check the Stretch Goals section further down this page for more details!
Pledging for Swords and Bagpipes now, you get Swords and Bagpipes board game + Know Your Enemy deck + Special Dagger deck + God Me Defend promo-cards (total MSRP $50) for $32 ONLY! Plus all stretch goals!
We sent the prototype copies of Swords and Bagpipes to many famous reviewers across the world. In short - we never expected so many kind words about the game! Our reviewers really loved the game! Wooooow!!!
IMPORTANT! The first prototype copies had rules for 3-5 players only. So some of the reviewers speak about that number of players. Now Swords and Bagpipes is extended for 2-6 player games!
THE GAME BOY GEEK
Dan King brilliantly describes the very core and the spirit of Swords and Bagpipes!
LET'S LEVEL UP
Rick has managed to show the complete game in his 10-minute video-run. Very nice and funny explanation of the rules plus the review itself!
BOWER'S GAME CORNER
Highly energetic 16-minute length review by Forrest Bower, going in details through the rules of Swords and Bagpipes!
OFF THE SHELF BOARD GAME REVIEWS
Michael divided his video into three parts: Introduction (here is the link), How to play and The Review (both are above). All three videos were done with thorough in-depth approach.
Now it's our turn to show you something :) We tried to play without haste to show you not only the gameplay, but the very spirit of the game and the basic rules!
Please note, that no real Scotts were filmed in this video — we are all Russians. Please excuse our pronunciation!
GeekDad review + interview with Yan Egorov by Will James. An excellent explanation of the game rules!
Club Fantasci review by Maurice Fitzgerald We are proud that Swords and Bagpipes got Club Fantasci Certified mark!
RPGnet review by Antonios S. Besides everything else, here is a good explanation for 2-player and 6-player games!
Swords and Bagpipes is set during the time of the First Scottish War of Independence of 1296. English king Edward I, nicknamed Hammer of the Scots, was great at manipulating Scottish lords. He lured them with gold, titles and wealth. He menaced them with devastation and even death. To join England or to fight for Scotland? That wasn't a piece-of-cake decision for the clan leaders of that time!
You are the leader of a Scottish clan. The game consists of 7 rounds. Each round is a battle, as English forces invade your country. Each round, you make the decision! England or Scotland? But... which choice will other clans make?
Here is the game board where your struggle is taking place:
At the beginning of each round, you gather troops under your banners and decide, how many of them to send to the coming battle. You play special cards - we call them Bagpipe cards - that give you advantages. Swords and Bagpipes is not a strategy game, so battle preparation is fast... and sometimes furious!
Before each battle, you choose your side. You decide whether you fight for the freedom of your country or betray and send your troops to aid the English invaders. Betrayal may bring you a better reward, but only if there are not many other players betraying.
After seven battles, the war will be over.
It is all clear and simple, but you will blow your mind every time you make a choice. And you will love it!
Long before Swords and Bagpipes game was created, we all enjoyed Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. Being the movie's director, Mel Gibson also plays the role of William Wallace, the honorable hero of the First War of Independence. The movie is precisely about the events of Swords and Bagpipes!
Swords and Bagpipes gives you a true feeling of how it was like. How it is to defend Scotland, when the enemy is strong, the victory seems unreachable... and the choice is in your hands!
As the saying goes, it is better to see something once than to hear about it hundred times. Well, in our case, it is even better to read it!
Here are the rules of Swords and Bagpipes in PDF:
Swords and Bagpipes is mostly language-independent. There is a little bit of text on Bagpipe and English Arms cards, but it is short and usually simple. It is more than enough to know Basic English to play the game!
We combined efforts with independent board game translators to create game rules in other languages.
Game rules translations:
GERMAN (by Christian Gienger) || FRENCH (by Stéphane Athimon) || SPANISH (Mauricio Montoya O.) || ITALIAN (by Mirko "Gotcha" Biagi) || PORTUGUESE (by Paulo Ricardo) || POLISH (by Waldemar Bata) || DUTCH (by Wesley Fechter) | RUSSIAN (by Denis Davydov) | JAPANESE (by Kohri Takeda)
Please note that final Swords and Bagpipes copies will have only English printed rules. All other rules come as free downloads!
We have created a LIVE DEMO of Swords and Bagpipes using the virtual table provided by Tabletopia. It is not playable yet, as Tabletopia is still in beta, but you can get the idea of how Swords and Bagpipes looks!
You will need Unity3D plug-in installed in your browser to access the site, this is fast and simple. Use the right mouse button to rotate the camera, mouse wheel or Z to zoom. You can interact with nearly every object, so go ahead and experiment!
Guys from Tabletopia will be at GenCon 2015. You might pay them a visit at booth #1452. They will be happy to tell you that Tabletopia is the all-new modern digital platform for virtual implementations of board games. Right now on Tabtetopia, besides visiting Swords and Bagpipes demo, you can only read about this outstanding project and subscribe to the news, or ask for an invitation, if you are a board game publisher or developer.
You will get all of the stretch goals simply by choosing a pledge with a copy of "Swords and Bagpipes"!
When you pledge for My Scottish Clan add-on, Yan Egorov, game author and game artist at once, will draw a character that will match your likeness. It will be based on a photo that you’ll provide. Your clan’s castle will be decorated with your custom clan name, motto, and even a herald!
You will get 2 copies of these customized components: your Castle, your Camp and two Choice tokens. The second copy is in case the first one becomes worn out with many plays or just killed by coffee =)
My Scottish Clan is a personal add-on. It will be included only in your copy of Swords and Bagpipes! You’ll become the owner of a unique clan, designed together with you!
All sheets and tokens for My Scottish Clan will be manually crafted. We will print them using quality material, carefully glue them to the cardboard and finally we will laser cut them. They will be done the similar way as the castles and the camps in our prototype copies (you can see them in all videos on this page). Castles and camps that we make this way look even greater than the standard production copies!
How to pledge: just add $150 to your pledge!
All awesome gaming components that you see are handcrafted within Rightgames company using a laser. You see exactly what you get. These are real photos!
That’s right! The wooden parts have awesome engraving. Plastic tokens have cuts with numbers, and so on. Everything is very finely detailed. Everything is made with love! We really want you to be thrilled with these game components when you will get them together with Swords and Bagpipes!
You can order anything that you see in any quantity. The shipping cost will remain $10 regardless of your order size. Mind that if you get only the set of three major tokens — Badge of Honour, Defeats marker, Stay Home! — the shipping for them will be free! One more thing: Essen delivery is free, of course (as usual).
If you decide to order all the components (three basic tokens + 6 Castles + 12 Choice tokens + 75 gold coins + 65 unit tokens + Token storage box), the total will be $235 including delivery. Not much when you consider how MUCH you get!
Material: We use high density fiberboard (HDF), it is pressed wood fibre. HDF has a very high durability and reliability. In addition, it does not require polishing, laser cuts are very clean and precise. As for plastic, we chose the well-known acrylic: reliable, pleasant to the touch, transparent and lightweight.
Assembly: Assembly is required for Castles and for Token storage box. You will need a usual glue, PVA glue for example. To assemble one Castle completely, you’ll need 15-20 minutes. The token box will take you about ten minutes. No special skills are required, everything is very simple.
Watch the video on fast Castle assembly:
How to pledge: Choose what you want to get. Add the shipping cost. Then click Manage Your Pledge and increase your pledge by the resulting amount.
My Scottish Clan: If you choose to get your own clan, shipping of the above items is free for you! Read more about My Scottish Clan read below!
If you want to order only “Beautify Your Game” components without Swords and Bagpipes: shipping becomes $20 instead of $10. Choose a pledge level named “For Freedom!”.
Rightgames company, publisher and developer of Swords and Bagpipes, has published a lot of famous games, that proved to be hits among Russian boardgamers. During this campaign you can get some of these great games along with Swords and Bagpipes at a discounted price!
Detailed information for each game is on Rightgames website. You can also watch video presentations by BoardGameGeekTV, they are at the bottom of each game’s page.
The Evolution game series is one of the most popular ones developed in Russia. You take on the role of a Creator: create your own animals, make them evolve, hunt, survive… The game is based on the theory of Charles Darwin and can even be used as a biology lesson in schools. Evolution appeals both to people who enjoy casual board games, as it is easy to learn, and to hardcore players who use complex strategies to win.
In 2014 Evolution was rebuilt and published by North Star Games. Evolution got nice art, its gameplay changed in many aspects. We love North Star’s version of Evolution, however the game was simplified and became more casual. Here you can get the original Evolution, with all the depth and variety it has in store. The game that makes Russian players go crazy for the last 5 years!
Evolution. The Origin of Species — the first game in the series. It has two expansions: Evolution. Time to Fly and Evolution. Continents. As for Evolution. Random Mutations, it is a standalone sequel that followed later. We recommend getting Evolution. The Origin of Species or all four boxes.
The Mediterranean World, several centuries before the Common Era. Rome has already been founded somewhere among the Latin Hills, but it is nothing but a village yet. Who knows how the wheel of history will turn? There are hundreds of cities on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and each of them struggles to become the center of the civilization!
In Founders of the Empire every player is a leader of a small ancient nation. Players gain new territories, develop trade and crafts, attack neighboring lands and build temples. The most developed civilization will get the title of “Founder of the Empire”.
Kings under Mountains is a simple, yet dynamic card game. Each player controls one of the four fantasy races — Dwarfs, Goblins, Orcs or Giants. With the help of their war units, players capture profitable mines while giving unprofitable ones to their competitors. They also develop their own mines and get treasures they hide. The player who earns the most victory points becomes the Underground King!
The flexibility of Kings Under Mountains is granted by the special two-sided cards. On one side of a card, there is a unit belonging to one of the four races. The other side of a card has a mine. There is a lot of interaction going on here! Win the game by careful planning and outwitting your opponents!
How to pledge
In order to make everything simple, we created four pledge levels. Choose the one that you like best! Shipping costs will be added as you pledge.
All four pledge levels are to the right of this page, together with all other pledges.
All games go with an average discount of 20%. Swords and Bagpipes will be at $29 for you (the same as in early bird and Essen early pickup).
Shipping: if you don’t live in the USA, please note that shipping costs increase noticeably as you add the second game (be it one more copy of Swords and Bagpipes or Evolution: The Origin of Species), but after that the growth becomes much smaller! For example, sending Swords and Bagpipes to EU is $11, sending Swords and Bagpipes + any game to EU is $20. But if there are 3-4 or even more games, it costs just $26 or even stays at $20 (depending on the final weight of your package). Finally, shipping seven games (!) to EU of the Everything pledge is only $31!
Essen delivery is available too. It has a zero shipping cost, however, Kickstarter lacks a country named “Essen” for shipping purposes :) Please choose “Swords and Bagpipes — Essen” pledge level and enter the appropriate sum while pledging (without the shipping cost).
Please message us in case of any questions!

In addition to creating board games, Yan Egorov, the author of Swords and Bagpipes, enjoys historical reconstructions, including the Viking age (10th century). Yan participates in open-air role-playing games and fights with steel weapons. In 2014, Yan traveled beyond the Arctic Circle. He tried to make his first board game, when he was 6 years old.
Yan did all the art for the game! For this Kickstarter edition, he also re-vamped the graphical design that was previously done for the Russian version. When we were ready to start, Yan was still adding the fine details to Swords and Bagpipes: those authentic “twirls” at Scottish shields and gems of the English crown, maniacally checking back and forth with the pictures of historic prototypes.
Swords and Bagpipes is published by combined forces of Rightgames and Moroz Puiblishing.
Rightgames is one of the oldest Russian board game companies, operating since 2002. The company is very well known inside Russia, but a bit less famous outside. Among the hits of Right Games are original edition of Evolution (later it was published as a completely new edition by North Star Games), Potion-Making, Founders of the Empire, Kings Under Mountains, Shinobi. War of Clans and other titles. You can grab some of them during this campaign!
The main engines for Moroz Publishing (“moroz” means “frost” in Russian) are Maxim Istomin, creator of Berserk TCG (1996), one of the founders of Hobby World (Russia), and Denis Davydov, former editor-in-chief of Igromania videogames magazine and producer of several other Russian game and fantasy magazines. Den is also the guy who mostly answers your comments and messages here!
We all love to see you among the backers of Swords and Bagpipes! Let's make this campaign truly fantastic together!
Risks and challenges
Our team has a huge 15-year experience in making, manufacturing and delivering board games. We are also experienced with crowdfunding campaigns and everything that comes with it.
We do not expect any delays in production of Swords and Bagpipes. Hm... only if Yan goes loose and will claim more time to polish all the new illustrations for stretch goals :) Rightgames and Moroz are teaming up to provide him with meat, bread, fresh water and friendly advices (especially with friendly ki... advices!) so he can finish everything at the right time and with the best quality.
Seriously speaking, we are going to finish pre-production right after the campaign is over. The game will go to the factory almost immediately. All necessary illustrations, including those opened with stretch goals, and everything else are being finalized during the campaign. Yes, we can work at this speed! After all, the game is nearly finished now, we only expect to know what cards and other components to add with the stretch goals achieved!
We will give away the first copies of Swords and Bagpipes at Essen 2015. The worldwide delivery will happen in October-November. We put December 2015 as the estimated delivery date in pledges just as an insurance for any possible delays that may occur. We aim to send all copies during this autumn.
Certainly unexpected manufacturing or shipping issues may occur. They always occur! That's life. So here is our promise — if avoiding an obstacle means that we need to bite the bullet and have some extra unplanned expenses — we WILL do it. The good reputation of our companies and your pleasure is what matters the most to us!
Our top priority is to make Swords and Bagpipes a total worldwide success and a nice Kickstarter experience for all of you, guys!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
