We're creating some of the best metal Apple Watch bands with original designs and precision Swiss quality manufacturing. If you missed out on this campaign, not to worry, we're offering some fantastic pre-order discounts right now on our website.
A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
(Please note that the shipping costs are in HKD. I've notified KS Support that there's no currency showing so I've been getting questions about why it's so expensive to ship, as people are legitimately assuming it's in USD. KS just launched in HK and Singapore recently so this might be a kink they've yet to work out.)
After launching our brand of premium Apple Watch bands last year, we're back again to offer a new model. This time, it's catered to all of you aluminum Apple Watch wearers!
My name is Eugene, a Canadian in Hong Kong who's been doing product development in the watch industry since 1997. During this extensive period, I've not only built up all the experience necessary to build some fantastic watches and watch components after having worked on many international fashion labels, but I've also worked with some of the industry leading factories who also manufacture at the very highest levels of quality for Swiss watch brands. There are a lot of cheap (in price and in quality) 3rd party Apple Watch bands out there already, but because of my background in the watch industry, my passion is to create some truly fantastic bands that live up to the Apple Watch in terms of design, fit, finish, feel and quality. If you visit our website (www.juukdesign.com) and read the blog reviews and customer testimonials, you'll see that we've already set ourselves apart with excellent bracelets that customers really appreciate.
Here are some quotes from blog reviews on our first band, the Revo:
"The thicker bracelet looks modern and sleek, and isn't overly heavy, in line with the premium craftsmanship I expect from Apple products."
"...I like it a lot, it's really well made...it's got some weight and heft...really nice band...really good value."
"It looks so good, the seamless mount looks Apple-like."
"It is not a cheap imitation band, but a product manufactured by watchmaking experts, which shows in the end product..."
"The first thing you'll notice is that this watch band is just downright sexy. It completely changes how the Apple Watch looks and feels on your body. For me, the Apple Watch went from feeling more of a utility watch to that plus a fashionable watch. It really changed the look and I love it."
We know that the majority of you Apple Watch wearers have the aluminum version (1st generation and Series 1 & 2), so we felt that it's about time that we made a high quality, well-designed metal band just for you when you feel like wearing your aluminum Apple Watch with a more formal look and feel. In turning to aluminum, we're able to make a very lightweight metal band that perfectly matches your lightweight Sport watch. In fact, the 38mm version weighs only 46 grams, and the 42mm version is only 53 grams, and these are the full lengths with all links in place; it's likely that yours will be lighter once you've sized it to your wrist and have removed some links. If we could give you any sort of reference to the weight of these bands, it would be that they feel like plastic; they're THAT light.
One issue that every 3rd party stainless steel band has had (even ours) is the colour-match with the aluminum models. It's just not possible because of two different metals with two different "colouring" processes for each. The colour of steel is inherently warmer than that of aluminum, so a perfect match is not possible, whether both metals are in their natural state or in their plated/anodized states, the different colour temperatures show through regardless. This has been much improved with our use of aluminum, and that's why we're so excited to be the first to be bringing this to all of you aluminum watch wearers!
This new aluminum band is tailored specifically for the aluminum Apple Watch (fits both Series 1 & 2). As with all of our metal bands, we've custom designed and developed the connectors for a seamless integration between the aluminum Apple Watch and the aluminum band. It's made with very strong, high grade 6061 aluminum, which is also used in the aircraft, automotive, boating and other industries requiring lightweight yet strong metals. While aluminum is notoriously difficult to use in the watch industry from a colour-matching perspective (the pieces in the same production batch from the beginning of the anodizing process to the end could be quite a different shade if not managed well), we have the expertise in place to do just that. In fact, the factory we're using for this bracelet also manufacture aluminum watch components for major Swiss brands.
With your help, we'll be able to put this into full production and start development on new aluminum designs at the same time. We're so very passionate about our custom designed products that we create for the Apple Watch, but we need your generous support to get us to the next stage.
A Few Product Specs
we're using the strong 6061 series aluminum, hard anodized in a matte finish
we use a solid 316L stainless steel deployant buckle with dual push buttons for added security
we're using very secure "capsa pins" for the adjustable links (they're crimped in the middle and insert into steel tube which also is crimped in the middle and this is how it locks precisely into place), which are better than the cheap friction pins found in many watches
we include a pin removal tool and microfibre cleaning cloth with every unit
the 38mm fits wrist sizes from 140mm to 190mm in circumference
the 42mm fits wrist sizes from 144mm to 210mm in circumference
the removable main links are 8mm long, and there are an additional 2 removable smaller links at 5mm long. This means that you can adjust this band to your desired length with the precision of 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 13mm gaps so it's very customizable. Many metal bands would not offer the 2 smaller 5mm removable links so you would only have multiples of 8mm to adjust and remove.
What We Need & What You Get
We're looking for just HK$78,000 (US$10,000) to get started on a small production run of the following 4 models, the best sellers of the aluminum Apple Watch:
1) 42mm Space Grey
2) 42mm Silver
3) 38mm Space Grey
4) 38mm Silver
Campaign and Production Timeline
Mass production takes about 75 days, and we know this is a long time to wait to get your new aluminum band on your aluminum Apple Watch, so we'll expedite this as soon as we possibly can. Although we have a 30 day campaign, we're going to start the first batch of production as soon as we hit our target. As the number of backers increases after the first production order, we'll continue to place new production orders as needed, and fulfil as quickly as we can with a staggered shipping schedule (first orders go out first, etc.).
How Your Contribution Helps
Developing and producing these high end bracelets does cost quite a bit of money for a startup like ours (we've been in operation and shipping our first premium Apple Watch bracelets since Nov 2015). Your contribution will help us pay for the some of the design and prototype development costs, as well as get us on our way with a production order with the factory.
If we greatly exceed the target, that'll help speed up our new product development that we have in the pipeline so that we can work on our next designs right away, all for the goal of giving you more choice with which to adorn your aluminum Apple Watch with.
Other Ways You Can Help
There are a couple of other ways you can help us...and it'll be very much appreciated:
• Please tell your friends with Apple Watches about us...every referral helps us get the exposure we so desperately need. Use your social media to help us go viral if you could.
• And a fun one for backers...we're still struggling to come up with a name for our new bracelet. Our current two on offer are called Revo and Locarno. I'd like to lean on the creativity of the community (i.e. all of you) so if you can suggest some names to us, we'd love to hear them. THE WINNER OF THE NAME WE USE WILL GET HIS/HER BRACELET OF CHOICE FOR FREE! (If you've backed us, we'll just give you a refund). We're looking for something sporty, 2-3 syllables preferably, and maybe even a reference to aluminum.
Stretch Goal #1: If we reach HK$234,000 (US$30,000) we'll introduce a red version of both the 38mm and 42mm bands. If you've contributed towards another colour already, you're more than welcome to switch.
Stretch Goal #2: If we reach HK$312,000 (US$40,000), we'll introduce a brand new Jet Black version in both 38mm and 42mm sizes; all polished just like the iPhone 7. This is such a new addition that we're waiting for the factory to get us some new samples so we'll post those pictures here as soon as we get them. This one should match every single Apple Watch because the screen, when off most of the time, is a shiny black finish as well, just like this new band. We can't wait to get it from the factory to show you.
As Seen On...
Risks and challenges
At the risk of sounding overconfident, there aren't any perceivable risks nor challenges that we expect to face in terms of making this happen. WE WILL SHIP. The only risks we may encounter is if something slips up during production and it'll be slightly delayed by a few weeks at most, hopefully.
We've been doing this in the watch industry for almost 2 decades, and the product development process is not always without snags and delays. Sometimes the raw materials might arrive in less than perfect condition, so we'd have to produce it again and wait. Or production comes out differently than expected and doesn't pass our stringent QC standards, and we need to re-work the components or even start again. I've even seen a delay due to a factory theft overnight when I was working on Hugo Boss watches, with a hole punched out of the factory wall by the thieves. I'm only mentioning this because I've seen a lot of reasons for delays over the years in this industry, which leaves me very well-prepared to tackle them. Product development and manufacturing is not always a smooth process, but we've always delivered.
One thing that I need to mention about aluminum that I've already touched on above is that colour consistency during the anodizing process (what Jony Ive colourfully called "the capillary effect" in the Jet Black iPhone 7 introduction) is sometimes challenging to get right 100% of the time, but we're set up to tackle this challenge with one of the best aluminum factories in the watch industry. However, we do need to be completely upfront and honest that it may never be a 100% match unless we're dealing with silver or black colours. Also, the grade of aluminum affects the colours as well, so you'll notice that even Apple has a huge variance in the MacBook, iPhone, Watch and iPhone dock aluminum colours. The fact that even Apple can't get a consistent colour across different products shows how challenging it is to make everything the same. But we're working extremely hard to make sure the variances are minimized.
Here are a few more points to give you some more confidence in backing this campaign:
• The bracelets you see in this campaign are already from our 3rd round of prototypes that we've developed. Our 1st and 2nd round prototypes turned out really well, but we felt that there were still some minor improvements that needed to be made so we took another 6 weeks to create new tooling to develop the prototypes that you see now. These are ready for production; there are no more issues on the design and construction, but it took us over 5 months to get to this final stage (not including the design stage). We've spent the time and have worked hard doing our due diligence to minimize risks and issues that could potentially crop up.
• We have a highly regarded and successful brand that's been in operation since last November, so we are already very familiar with this type of high end Apple Watch band development. We've learned a few things along the way, so our experience has helped guide us to smoother and more precise development of these Apple Watch bands going forward.
• I've got a watch company, Pacific Watchworks Ltd., that's been making watches and watch components for many crowdfunded campaign owners, so I'm very much in this watch industry and have been for a very long time. You can look up campaigns such as Finn, Jacopo Dondi, Novo, Votum, Gauss and Alberta Watch Company...we've made all of their watches. This is something we do on a full-time basis, and I've been in this industry for almost two decades after having worked for the Timex and Movado watch groups (among others). You can also learn more about my watch industry background on my LinkedIn profile:
We're offering pairs (a 38mm and a 42mm unless otherwise requested) in your choice of colours AND finishes (subtle matte like most in this campaign, a fine satin brushed or shiny polished like the Jet Black).
This is an extremely limited edition Perk for this campaign only...we almost had to beg the factory to do this because it takes a few hours to set up each new colour for each run...so this will be your chance to get something incredibly unique and customized just for you and your partner (or friend, parent, sibling, etc).
The colour chart you see in this campaign is a guide, but if you don't see a colour you like here, we can work with you to come up with a colour you may prefer more.
