Nate Taylor and Pat Johnson became friends after back-and-forth quoting The Princess Bride from beginning to end for no particular reason. Their friendship led to many creative collaborations and one long-running web comic. After seven years, Coming Distractions has ended its epic-ish story. Now Nate and Pat want to put the complete series, as well as never-before-seen concept art and new material, together into a bookshelf-worthy collection.
Before Nate Taylor collaborated with Patrick Rothfuss on The Slow Regard of Silent Things and The Princess and Mr. Whiffle series, he was a starving artist with a love of movies and cartoon strips.
What began as a simple set-up (theater employees celebrate, mock, and role-play new films each week), evolved into a meta-adventure about self-aware characters trapped inside a movie. The story begins in the real world of consumer scams and theater rivalries, but once the fourth wall is broken, the characters are pitted against each other for the sake of entertainment. They learn the hard way that being in charge of their own movie, means they aren't allowed to be dull.
Nate and Pat set out to amuse readers, but they never stopped trying to amuse themselves. Put together, the story of Coming Distractions is a tour of nearly a decade’s worth of films and an adventure story about what we love/hate about movies and the people who bring them to you.
If funded, all books will be produced via self-publishing websites (i.e. Lulu.com) and shipped to you via the USPS. The choice of website will be determined by final pricing comparisons, to determine the best costs to backers. Funds collected from this Kickstarter campaign go directly into creating the book so you can own the complete story for yourself.
Regardless of whether you fund the project, thanks for stopping by and reading this far. You are awesome.
We are still finalizing our tee-shirt design, but here is a mock up of what you can expect.
3k - Director's Commentary on the PDF (Reflections, insights and amusing thoughts from the creators for nearly every strip). If reached, this stretch goal is available to all backers. UNLOCKED!
4k - New art! We have friends who are artists and we would love to involve them in this project. Pin-ups! Wacky concept sketches! Barely recognizable doodles from writers who rarely draw! UNLOCKED!
Here are a few of the artists who will be contributing to the edition.
- Phil Foglio (Girl Genius)
- Shane Tyree (Albino Dragon + Call of Cthulhu)
- BJ Hiorns (College Survival Guide + Jackie's Fridge)
- And more to come!!!
5k - Introduction to the complete collection by Patrick Rothfuss (Author of the Kingkiller Chronicle). Mr. Rothfuss is witty as hell and one of the finest writers of fantasy ever. If we reach this goal, everyone's edition becomes infinitely more awesome. UNLOCKED!
- Plus, backers who receive a signed/numbered edition will get the autograph of Patrick Rothfuss along with the creators.
6K - Free pair of postcards for all backers! The postcards are full-color and feature new art. Frame them, mail them, or use them as a bookmark. We'll give them away if we reach this stretch goal. UNLOCKED!
7.5K - King Sheep Comics #1 - A Kickstarter exclusive comic book preview of past, ongoing, and future projects from King Sheep Productions. If we reach this stretch goal, we will send the comic along with the book to all $30 (and up) backers (including those who only want the tee-shirt). The comic features the first published appearance of never-before-seen characters and concepts. It's highly collectible, shamelessly self-promoting, and totally free if we reach this stretch goal.
10K - ???

Risks and challenges
The biggest barrier for this project is financial. Beyond publication costs, we also intend to purchase an ISBN and bar code to allow for future print runs. If funded, the comic will also be available digitally on Comixology. Since the comic is already complete, our remaining steps involve formatting the original High-Res digital scans for publishing, finalizing publication and shipping details, and arranging stretch goals. There are only a few steps left, but this project can still grow along with your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
