Let's spread more conversations that matter!
If you’re like me you probably realized at one point in your adult life that you just talk about “stuff” with your friends. It’s all small talk, chit chat and surface level conversations about the weather, sports and TV shows you’re watching.
Although I live in a city with millions of other people, and have thousands of Facebook friends, LinkedIn connections and Instagram followers… I still felt lonely inside. I realized didn’t have many REAL friends.
While sharing this with more people I learned I am not the only one:
When you’re hungry - you need food. When you’re thirsty - you need water. When you’re lonely - you crave connection.
But what do we do most of the time? We are too scared to be vulnerable and reach out to our friends, even if we do we stick to boring small talk, because we’re afraid of being rejected, judged or seen as weird.
The truth is nobody kills themselves because they’re hungry - they kill themselves because they are lonely. And I believe it’s because they don’t have the courage or tools to start a conversation that matters.
And that is why I created ASK DEEP QUESTIONS over a year ago.
The Original Deck includes 48 thoughtful questions that go below the surface to create meaningful connections. Get to know your partner, family, friends, strangers or even yourself.
Our world needs to be less divided!
Although we often focus on how we are different we all want the same thing: to be seen by other people and feel like we belong.
Relationships travel at the speed of vulnerability, so the more we can have opportunities to remove our armor, remove our masks the more we feel truly connected to each other.
JOIN THE MOVEMENT AND GET YOUR OWN DECK OF ASK DEEP QUESTIONS
These cards are perfect for:
- Small gatherings (dinners, brunch, park hangs, cottage weekends...)
- Events (Retreats, Networking Events, Conferences, adult summer camps, ...)
- Travel (road trips, camping trips, in hostels, …)
- Coaching (masterminds, therapy groups, men's or women's groups, ...)
- Membership Organizations (church groups, coworking spaces, …)
It's an easy way to take your conversations on a journey instead of getting stuck at the small talk level. There are so many ways to use the cards, but these are the basic rules I usually share with people:
- 1. Pick a question card (start with "Curious").
- 2. If you're not comfortable with the question, ask yourself why, before you decide to exchange it.
- 3. Share your experiences; tell stories; answer why.
- 4. When someone else is sharing, be present. Listen and see where the conversation takes you.
- 5. Once you are ready to go deeper, pick a "Brave" or "Vulnerable" card.
Over 400 people already have joined the movement and have the courage to start conversations that matter. Based on 48 conversations per deck we've already getting close to 20,000 meaningful conversations that have been started since the launch in November 2017.
And everyone has their take on why these cards are so important and so useful to have with you:

That is a great question because you've probably read that I've already been selling this deck since last year. And this was a great way to test the market and make sure it's a viable idea, but it was a very labour intensive process.
I poured a lot of love into the cards by assembling and organizing the questions for each deck, applying stickers to each box and then sending them out one at a time.
I am doing the campaign now because I believe in these cards enough to commit to ordering 500 or even 1,000 decks from a factory in China that will create a much nicer box, organize and pack everything and even will take care of some of the fulfillment for the Kickstarter campaign to make sure the decks arrive for the holidays.
This will then also allow me to get the cards on Amazon and into retail stores across Canada and the US.
Yes, I've already sold 400 decks, but I ordered them 100 at a time, printed stickers, hand packed each individual box... It was a labour of love, but there was not enough profit margin to explore other opportunities like selling the cards in stores or with Amazon Prime.
By ordering a larger quantity I can bring the cost per deck down, but it requires a larger upfront investment. And that's where you come in!
Hi, my name is Jan.
Growing up in Germany I felt invisible most of my childhood as the shy kid who didn’t really socialize a lot with others. I would rarely speak up, raise my hand in class.
I had these weird butterflies in my stomach anytime a teacher was going to ask a question and pick a student from the class. I was the guy who sat next to you in math and years later you completely forgot about.
But I craved connection.
Being an only child I needed to put myself out there, so I took the scary step and joined sports clubs, summer camps and even politics. I would now say that some of my biggest lessons and growth growing up was from joining these communities.
I felt I had it figured out until… I moved to Canada in 2008.
Again I knew nobody, I wasn’t fluent in the language and although all Canadians I met were super friendly on the surface, but it was hard to make deep relationships.
It took me 8 years to finally find a new community where I felt like home. Loving, supportive, encouraging, everyone motivated to growth and learning.
They became my chosen soul family – my tribe!
Since then I have been challenging myself to stop avoiding courageous conversations, like this one with my family:
Other ways you can help are sharing the campaign on your social media or sending it to your friends and family.
A HUGE THANK YOU
I could not pull this campaign off without the support of my AMAZING Kickstarter Launch Team that is sharing and promoting the campaign with me, plus JB who is helping me sort out the printing with the factory, my Quantum Leap mastermind group for all the input, my wife for allowing me to run this campaign with a 3 week old baby and also her help in shipping and packing previous versions of the deck.
Plus I am super grateful for every single person that came out to one of my early "play test" events, the campfire conversations, the LevelUP events.... YOU GUYS ROCK!!
Risks and challenges
The game is finished and ready to go, so I'm confident we can make this happen. I am working with experienced manufacturers that have done Kickstarter card games and tarot cards before, so we've already figured out our production and shipping strategy.
I mean, all we're doing here is printing a deck of cards, so there's not much that can go wrong. But you never know, which is why I've kept our campaign as simple as possible. No complicated rewards, no overreaching stretch goals - just the game and a few bonuses that only rely on me to deliver.
But that said this is my first card game and first Kickstarter campaign, so I'm learning a lot, and I'll probably make mistakes. Luckily I've got incredible support from colleagues who have already completed successful Kickstarter campaigns as well as the fantastic community out there that I've pestered so much with my questions and requests over the past year.
But if you've got any questions or worries, please get in touch!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
