NEW MEDIA!

Michael Cofer Talks to The Indie Game Designers Podcast about Sengoku: The Warring States

Brian Compter Talks Ludus Senatus on The Indie Game Designers Podcast!

Welcome to the campaign! We have another set of three fun and engaging pocket-sized games for you, each with all the rules printed on a folding box to allow you to bring game night with you almost anywhere! All three games make up the second wave in our F.L.O.A.T. series. It is our goal to release card games that are Fun, Lively, Original, Approachable, and Tiny. These games could find a home on a lunch table or gaming table, at game night or at date night (maybe check with your partner first on that one).

Each game contains 18 cards and a folding "hook box" that has the rules printed directly on the inside. The cards and boxes are made of 305 gsm black-core card stock (same as Magic: The Gathering) with a protective UV coating as well. Keep scrolling for info on each game, reviews, how to play videos and more. We hope you join us on this campaign and look forward to making these titles a reality!

"I've thoroughly enjoyed each of these games. They all offer different game mechanics, they all play in only 20 minutes, and they are all perfectly transportable." - Cassie, The Indie Game Report

In Sengoku: The Warring States, players take the role of powerful Shoguns caught up in the infighting and power struggles of the Sengoku period. Players each control 3 villages, one secretly containing one of their noble vassals, known as a Daimyo. Each Round players will simultaneously deploy waves of attackers and defenders among the villages in an attempt to either destroy two of their opponent's villages or capture their Daimyo. Players fight through several battles in an attempt to grab more power and become a stronger Shogun!

"Not only is the play in it fun but the artwork is really cool in it... It's a game I'm really enjoying, it goes in the backpack." - Glenn Flaherty, Boardgames and Bourbon

Istanbul? Constantinople? Lygos? Byzantium? Turkey's capital has gone by many names and you want it known through the streets that your favorite was the greatest name! Istanbul or Constantinople? sees players attempting to gain influence in this naming debate throughout the streets of a great city. Double sided cards will show different values for each player that they are attempting to total and reach scoring conditions. By Swapping, Flipping, and Replacing cards a player or team of players can claim a street for their own and gain those people on their side of the debate. Influence is gained from the highest valued card in the street. The first player to reach 19 Influence, or the most after the last street is claimed, is victorious!

"I will say that I think this an excellent family-weight game..." - What's Eric Playing?

Enter a slightly sideways Senate where success isn't about voting for what is right but what is correct! In Ludus Senatus, players take the role of Senators looking to gain approval by seeming like they actually get something done. Players will manipulate tableaus of cards, swapping votes, gaining information, and attempting to stack the Senate's vote in their favor. When the requisite number of votes are placed into a central tableau, all the center votes and each players' votes are revealed. Any Senator whose personal votes are in line with the central tableau will gain approval from the populace. The first Senator to 5 approval Points is the winner!

"There are many layers of tactical decision making in this quick lightweight game...   I vote YEA! on backing Ludus Senatus when it hits Kickstarter." - Expand Your Game

These will be a handful of promo cards that will come free with Kickstarter copies of the games or be available in person at cons. Since these games are so small we like to make sure the game you are getting at funding is the game we wanted it to be. Promos are just extra ideas we thought would be great after the games were set. We will reveal more as we reach more goals for more promo cards! See the Updates section for descriptions of Promos as they are revealed.

Below are some quick overview GIFs of the gameplay for each game. Click the logo for each game to get the complete rulebook as it will be printed in the folding box and a black and white, print and play copy of the game! If you have a few minutes, you can also check out this awesome Overview video done by Cassie from The Indie Game Report!

RETAILER NOTE: Message Concrete Canoe Games on Kickstarter or email us directly using concretecanoegames@gmail.com for more details on the US Retailer Pledge level.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING NOTE: Shipping outside the US is an extra $6 for the One Game, Two Games, and All Three Games Pledges. While there is no set "friendly" shipping for international orders, the games are small enough that no additional customs fees, etc. were encountered for the vast majority of international backers. Depending on your countries policies there is a possibility of some additional charges, though this is unlikely from our Wave 1 experience. Please keep in mind this was also based on ordering 3 or less copies as the first wave only had 3 games available.

Cecilia and Eric Hyland, Designers Istanbul or Constantinople?

Cecilia and Eric Hyland have been designing games together under Tank & DPS since September 2015. They created “Above Snakes”, “Open Market”, and “Treble with Gators” for game contests on The Game Crafter and the games ended up as a Semi-finalist and two Finalists. During this time their friend, Ken Franklin, told them about Protospiels. So, they decided to use these designer conventions to workshop their games. One of these games was what would come to be published as Fleecing Olympus, a dice rolling, card playing negotiation game where you get to be Greek deities vying for the throne of Olympus. Passport Game Studios signed Fleecing Olympus in 2017 and brought it to market at Gen Con 2018, (it is currently available through your FLGS). Eric and Cecilia are still regular attendees at Protospiels around the Midwest workshopping their own games and helping other designers with their own design challenges. Over the past year Eric had a desire to provide some type of podcast content back to the community. Cecilia suggested compiling all the tabletop industry news he informs her about into that content. So, on top of designing games together they both self-produce “Tank & DPS Tabletop News” where they cover more than just new games, (available on SoundCloud and iTunes.)

“Istanbul or Constantinople?” is a game that actually came to Eric in a dream. All he saw was white cards arranged in the diamond-like shape with black positive numbers with mirrored red negative numbers and that moving the cards around was a part of the game. Upon informing Cecilia of this idea they decided to start structuring other rules and mechanics around this dream idea. Now here they are, after a lot of playtesting and development, with “Istanbul or Constantinople?” being published by Concrete Canoe Games.

Concrete Canoe Games

Concrete Canoe Games was founded in 2012 by Daniel Grek with the goal of sounding cooler when he talked to other game people. Since then, Concrete Canoe Games has moved into the realm of publishing pocket sized games with big fun. Risks and challenges

This is Concrete Canoe Games second Kickstarter in our F.L.O.A.T. series of hook box games. We aim for small boxes that have bigger fun inside so we can make sure you get a quality game without a lot of delays and headaches. We operate with a smaller, US based printer that uses standardized sizes of certain components to make sure we have a consistent quality and faster production times. Our first campaign ended in May of 2018 and fulfillment began August of that same year. We hope for a similar 3 to 4 month turnaround time. Our first campaign gave us some solid information on things like fulfillment to help with this next campaign.

Risks and Delays are still possible. We could run into production or shipping hiccups that are unpredictable. We also may have a longer lead time with some of the promo cards we could possibly unlock. With these things in mind I have added just a small amount of time to our delivery dates with the hope of delivering sooner. As mentioned in an earlier section, one international backer in our previous campaign did have an additional customs fee their country charged them. I have not heard from any other backers with this problem.
