About this project
Hello amigos and thank you for taking the time to check out my page. By contributing to this campaign, as well as by sharing it with others, you will be supporting GREGORIO URIBE BIG BAND's first album!
So first of all, let me show you what the band sounds like. This is the first song that we've recorded professionally and we want to record many more with your help:
Did you like it? Wouldn't it be awesome if we could record a full album with this unique sound? Well...WITH YOUR SUPPORT, WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!
I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia where I developed a passion for traditional music styles as Cumbia and Vallenato. Later, I studied at Berklee College of Music where I fell in love with the exiting and intricate language of American-born big band music. When I graduated in 2007, I decided to create a unique band with a powerful sound that would combine these two passions of mine. So I created a 16-piece band under the name Gregorio Uribe Big Band (GUBB).
ABOUT THE BAND:
After getting goosebumps during our first rehearsal as I realized that my dream was coming true, this band became my life-project and from that moment on, every single day and all my energy has been focused on developing and promoting this band. This has meant working on new music, organizing rehearsals, reaching out to venues, writing press releases, emailing journalist...and even carrying a 40-pound suitcase containing the music for the whole band on the NYC subway! The point is: there is little I wouldn’t do in order to give my band the exposure that I believe it deserves.
Great things have happened since we first started: The band has been constantly active playing in world renown venues such as Iridium Jazz Club, outdoor festivals (Celebrate Brooklyn and Salem Jazz Fest.), private events (Rhode Island State House, ABC Foundation) and even in the streets of New York. Also the video of our single "Caribe Contigo" was featured on MTV in the US and the UK for four weeks. I've also been interviewed on CNN and have performed next to Grammy Winner Carlos Vives and the band has recently completed two years of a monthly performance at Zinc Bar in New York City. Can you imagine how much more we can do once we have an album?
WHY I NEED YOU:
The music industry has changed much over the past 15 years and today artist and band leaders like myself have to find different and creative ways to share their music with the world. This means a lot more work for us but it also means that we don't have to wait in line for a big record company to produce our music. We can do this by reaching out to regular folks like you and I who simply love music and want to support unique projects that they think SHOULD BE HEARD.
COST OF MAKING AN ALBUM:
As you can imagine, recording such a large band, is not cheap (but it's definitely worth it). The money that we raise through this campaign will be used for things such as:
-Renting a recording studio
-Hiring a recording engineer
-Mixing and mastering
-Paying the musicians (Although my guys and girls play this music because they love it, they are busy professional musicians and educators that make a living solely by their talent and deserved to be paid for their time and hard work)
-Band photos and CD artwork
-Making copies of the album
KICKSTARTER AND OUR GOAL:
In case you don't know, the way Kickstarter campaigns work is that if we don't reach your fundraising goal, we don't get ANY OF THE MONEY :( This makes it more scary (and kind of exiting) but it also makes it all the more important that you help spread the word and get others to support us as well.
The good thing is that we can go past our goal and if we can raise more money we'll be able to produce an even better album. We could bring guest artists, have a few extra songs or even produce a music video. In reality our goal is between $15,000 and $20,000...so let's get the word out!
As you can see there are many reward-categories to chose from but I want you to know that EVERY CONTRIBUTION WILL GET US CLOSER TO OUR GOAL so every dollar counts! Also, if you have any ideas about different rewards you think could be cool just send me a message through this page. This is something THAT WE ARE DOING TOGETHER so don't be shy if you want to get in touch.
THANK YOU! GRACIAS! GRAZIE! OBRIGADO! MERCI! DANKE!
Risks and challenges
Once we raise the money and record the album there will be some challenges in terms of finding ways and to promote the album as much as possible. I will ideally want to work with a publicist and invest in other ways of promotion. However, raising the money to actually record is the first and most important challenge. So I'm confident that I can make the rest happen once we have a great album ready.
We've been able to do so much these past years without having an album. So can you imagine all we can do once we have it? THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
