Stretch Goals are Now Live!
Additional funds will go to two things: First, paying our amazing inker who, believe it or not, until now has been doing this out of the goodness of his heart. Anything beyond that fee will go directly to production costs for Episode 2.
Jennifer Hernandez is a young law student with a past full of loss and heartache trying to make the best of things and move on with her life. When she crosses paths with a stranger afflicted by prophetic visions, she finds that the past has a way of catching up with us—and when it does, it’s out for blood. Thrust into the center of an ancient prophecy and hidden conspiracies, the pair will try to unravel the plans of a mysterious villain while becoming targets themselves.
Along the way, they will need to assemble a ragtag group of unlikely, prophesized saviors known as The Chosen who will aid in the fight against this threat. They’ll need all the help they can get, for the dead serve the darkness. And just like secrets, they refuse to stay buried.
Into The Darkness (ITD) is envisioned as an ongoing series featuring an ensemble cast, lots of action, tightly woven character development, and a ton of witty banter (for good measure). ITD covers a range of genres (action, superheroes, undead, character drama) and offers something for almost every comic fan. Our end goal is to offer the freedom of storytelling that indie comics offer with AAA level writing and art. In this first issue, we set up our characters, explore a little of their world, and tease the big bad they will need to contend with if they want to survive.
ITD is the culmination of almost 20 years of research, writing, and refinement. The twists and turns of the entire story are already planned...we just need YOUR help to get this train rolling. For the first issue, the script is written, the first 7 pages are completed, and we have a good jump on the artwork for the remaining 13. What we need is funding so we can get the artwork to our colorist and get everything printed. We’ve got a slew of awesome reward levels below and know that we’ve already got an awesome and loyal fan base brewing. We’re extremely excited to finally be putting this out for everyone and know you’ll love these characters as much as we do.
These rules govern the way we approach writing and art developed mostly by observing what annoys us in mainstream comics:
RULE #1: No costumes. That’s right, no costumed heroes. Nobody would wake up with superpowers and say, “You know what? I really need more spandex in my life.” This also forces us to keep our art quality up since characters need to be recognizable by features instead of colorful costumes.
RULE #2: Characters will be portrayed realistically. No biceps the size of a basketball or guns that are bigger than a car that would blow your arms off with the recoil if you tried to shoot it. No stick figure women with giant...assets...cinched up under their necks. The name of the game here is creating a world of grounded, believable heroes.
RULE #3: Superhuman abilities must have a reasonable explanation of how they operate. Yeah, we know this is fiction...we’re not being THAT big of a stick in the mud. We just want things to seem kinda-sorta plausible. The idea is to challenge us to tell better stories instead of relying on tropes and over-the-top Deus Ex Machina explanations for everything.
RULE #4: Dead is Dead. There is no coming back from the beyond. We feel comics rely too much on reversing the end of a character to avoid fan backlash. If we kill a character and you write us hate mail... great. It means we’re doing our jobs right!
And now for the part you really want...sample pages! Take a look at the first seven pages of Into The Darkness below to see firsthand the kind of quality storytelling that means so much to us.
"ITD is one of the best mash-ups of genres I have seen. Episode 1 thrusts you into a trip through a zombie laden semi-apocalyptic world , (with) Cassandra inspired mythology that tightly packs in the action in a Blade-like fashion just in time to leave you asking what the hell happened and why is there a cat everywhere they go? That artwork is stupendous."

"Into The Darkness offers a unique spin on the popular zombie genre. The story blends in paranormal elements that let's the reader know that everything may not be what it seems. The first issue does not hold back. It is filled with action and intrigue that already has me theory-crafting. A good opening chapter is gripping without being too mysterious. Into The Darkness does just that."

"This comic starts off like looking at a shotgun and admiring its quality for a few moments, just before it blasts out shrapnel in an explosion of what happens next?!!"
~James Burton, Member of Scattered Comics, Creator of Damage inc., and the award-winning Inheritance horror comic.
"Can't wait for the finished product. Visually very impressive. I haven't read a comic since the early to mid 70's when I was a kid. I actually still have some of those comics in my closet. I liked the horror ones, and that's what this felt like. A nice throwback to the horror comics of when I was a kid."
~Holie Goalie, The Gamehounds Podcast
"Into the Darkness starts with a foreboding prophecy, one that predicts dark times and only a sliver of hope. From here we almost literally burst through the door of the story and hurtle forward at break neck speed. You find yourself turning pages as quickly as possible, trying to escape the incoming horrors until to find yourself in an uncertain future, guided by a man who definitely doesn't have himself together."

These are the hard-working, staunch individuals sacrificing life and limb to bring you a story of daring action and chilling terror. Learn more by clicking any image below.
Mark Zuptich - Creator, Writer, Artist, Letterer
Mark is a former Graphic Designer born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio (where ITD takes place). Somewhere along the way, he ditched the design thing and became a Front End Developer. He's been reading and derawing comics as long as he can remember and currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife and three insane cats. In his spare time, he speaks on behalf of the trees to combat over-production of thneeds and truffula tree deforestation.
Shaun Barbour - Creative Director, Inker, Social Media Guru
Shaun works his rear off on a daily basis in the healthcare industry. Mark snapped him up for ITD after finding that Shaun not only laid down some damn fine inks, but also looked good in skull facepaint. That's a hard to find twofer, right there.
Shaun enjoys giving life to our realm of darkness and instilling terror into his evil minions. Well, it's really just his family but don't tell him that...he's kind of crazy.
Chris Hall - Colorist
We really don't know much about Chris...his existence is shrouded in mystery and layer upon layer of obfuscating shadows. Or he just lives so far away that we don't associate with him much outside of work messaging—take your pick.
What we do know is that Chris is the house colorist for Eibon Press and has been working in comics for 12 years as a colorist. He has worked for assorted other prints, including The Wicked RIghteous from Alterna Comics. We also know that his professionalism, dedication, and talent consistently challenge the rest of the team to create the absolute best comic we can.
Some reward tiers will receive one (or all) of the posters below, or a t-shirt featuring your choice of one of these hand-painted beauties..BEHOLD!
Risks and challenges
As stated in the video, the comic is well underway. We have already finished 7 pages. This means that upon the completion of this campaign, there isn't much time before we have the physical (or digital) reward in your hand. That's where you come in. Printing costs, distribution, and paying the artists are the main priority for this campaign so that we can provide you with an exciting comic that you will be excited to share. Anything above and beyond will go DIRECTLY towards funding the next issue of Into the Darkness and building an even better reward tier for the future. Our goal is to make AAA quality comics with the passion of an indie fan base!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
