About

In the early months of 2011, while on a long train journey heading to New Delhi, I sat next to and had a long conversation with a young girl called Haarti. She was fearing for her life and was on the run from her family as she was in love with a boy from a different caste who her parents would never accept. The lovers' only hope was the ’Love Commandos’, an activist group who tries to protect and help the frightened runaway couples at a secret location in the centre of old Delhi.

As one would expect, when I arrived back to the UK from my traveling, I couldn't help thinking of Haarti and what she said. I knew I had to go back to India and find out what happened to her. As I had never heard of ’Love Commandos’ and needed more knowledge about 'honour killing', I gathered a number of books and articles about the subject and did a lot of research. Flipping through one of the articles, I came across contact details of the group 'Love Commandos', so I got in touch with them saying that I would love to visit them, and write about their devoted dedication and work, with the hope that I might find Haarti as well.

In 2012 I traveled back to India and, although I never met Haarti again, I was lucky enough to experience at first hand, the fight that the 'Love Commandos' do for the threatened lovers, and subsequently, I got very close to one of the couples, Azad and Neetu, who helped me to understand more deeply the dilemma between their mutual love and their families' expectations.

As we all know, India has gone through troubled times over the years. I've been working on this project now for the past two and a half years, made several trips to India, meeting, not only the run away couples, but relatives, whose belief in family honour, tradition and pride is above everything. My trips have left me with a host of memories and a special group of dear friends, which led me to write this book.

The book itself is about the work of the 'Love Commandos' and the increasing number of young couples who are facing death in the name of honour at the hands of their own families, for defying centuries of tradition, because they reject arranged marriages in modern India. The book is based on true events of love, honour, rage, and death in the ancient country where marrying someone is still often not a matter of their emotional feelings for each other, but of family wealth and political power. The book was published in December 2013 in Hungarian.

Writing a book and finding the right words to express yourself is not easy, even harder when the book you write is not only a documentary book but more than that. It is full of personal experience, emotion, deep thoughts about life, belief, and love, which is really hard to put in a foreign language if you are not a native speaker.

My goal here on Kickstarter is to raise enough funding to professionally translate my book from Hungarian into English as my publisher doesn't have the capacity to deal with it. I have already contacted some agents in the UK, who would be interested in reading the book, but they require a translation of it.

My aim is to reach a greater number of English readers, as it seems essential to me to find people globally who would like to know first hand stories from both sides of these events and who believe in the cause of stopping 'honour killings'.

As my book is 450 pages, the full translation of it would cost around £7000. I would be delighted and grateful if i could raise part of this.

This well translated book will enable me to contact agents and publishers and I would then take this body of work back to India for all those involved to read.

This project has always been about creating an awareness of the culture of 'honour killings'. The money raised for this endeavor will only be used to cover the actual costs of the project.

Please consider helping me with this effort. Any contribution you may make will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Risks and challenges

This is a very low risk project, as I'm highly motivated to have my book translated.
The only challenge is to find a great English publisher who believes in the success of the book and who would establish the right market for it.
