About

As with any product, there is the ugly threat of copies. The Bandicoot is pending design registration 201812762 and patent application 2018901607. We take infringement very seriously and will take legal action if required. (Sorry 'bout that. Now, to more exciting matters...)

The real story here is the fact that we haven't traded off optics for looks. We have both - form and function. Have a goosey at how this little ripper works:

We've placed these LEDs in the optimum position for their purpose. This means no bulky, hinged lighthead, no bulky battery pack on the back, and no elastic fabric over the top of your head to hold it all together.

We will launch with 4 colours: Black / Midnight Blue / Red / Khaki Green

This is a common concern we hear. But fear not Fabio, it isn't sticky like in a rubber band. It's a matte finish that treats your hair kinder than Pantene.

This is a rubber band. The Bandicoot is not.
This is a rubber band. The Bandicoot is not.

If you want to look it up, the surface texture is called Yick Sang YS20043. Sounds fancy, right?

Fear not Fabio! It won't tangle your locks.

Camping is one of those categories where things don't really change all that much. There are a few big players in headlamps, and they simply add a few extra lumens, and update a couple of toggles on their headbands each year. We wanted to throw a cat among the pigeons, or a marsupial among the flaming galahs.

Most bright headlamps are bulky, ugly, fiddly, unwieldy, pricey and uncomfy.
Most bright headlamps are bulky, ugly, fiddly, unwieldy, pricey and uncomfy.

Or you can get them tiny, wimpy, and with a measly lumen output.

As with bike bells, headlamps all pretty much look and work the same. And there are two specific problems we tried to solve:

Fabric elastic loses fidelity. This is an overly syllabic way of saying "straps are crap". We asked headlamp owners what the biggest issues were with this product and kept hearing "the strap died before the light did".

Our silicone band won't lose its strength, and doesn't need constant adjusting. Wearing a slightly thicker beanie? No probs, it'll stretch over.

If you have a tiny headlamp, chances are it has an equally tiny output and one set of optics pointing in one direction. We wanted to introduce sophisticated optics - for reading; running; finding the toilet without waking up your other half; ambient light; and low light - but without the kerfuffle. equivalent to a potato... on the front of your lemon.

The idea started years ago. That is, the idea to change the way headlamps worked and were worn.

We looked at where the lights sat on the head.

Then decided they were probably in the right place for all the functions we wanted. But we wanted it toight. Like a toiger.

The size and bulk, plus the hinges that you see on most multi-function headlamps are so cumbersome. We wanted to get a little crazy..."unhinged" if you will...so we created a "Single Chassis".

It's important to keep a low profile. (B'dm)
It's important to keep a low profile. (B'dm)

It's not unusual to have battery and LEDs together, but it is unusual to have them in one chassis at such low profile. The aim and the outcome? To provide a static platform that provided variable angle optics - each designed for specific tasks .....our designer set our engineer was no small one.

But Eli and the team only went and bloody did it!

We looked at fabrics, elastics, treatments, toggles and all sorts.

Exploring strap texture and design

And we came back to the benefits of silicone. After all, after a year or two, classic elastic straps becomes about as reliable as the waistband on your lucky* undies.

We also realised there should be no "loose ends". So our toggle system of tightening is unique and easy to tighten or loosen.

We looked at the LEDs and found some interesting opportunities to innovate:

1. Colour Rendering Index (CRI): Reading lights are often too bright white OR too luke warm. Our downlights have a CRI of >90 which means objects’ colours are represented accurately.

How dya like them apples?
How dya like them apples?

Y’know when you are in the supermarket and stuff just don’t look quite right?.. Yeah, low CRI! This is great info for pub quiz, and…designing headlamps.

2. Battery Indicators: The reading lights are also the battery indicators

3. Our 3 core LEDs are from LumiLeds. We have selected particularly high efficiency LEDs to ensure optimum output, whilst retaining runtime. And the colour temperature is whiter, to provide excellent visibility at distance.

We made the decision to go Li-Po USB rechargeable. Why? Because the advantages are overwhelming. Save space, weight, your wallet, and the environment. Did you know one of our batteries is equivalent to 650 AAAs...

And to recharge is now extra easy with our PWR Bank range, directly into your computer, or via a USB wall charger.

PLEASE NOTE, WE WILL ASK FOR YOUR DELIVERY ADDRESS IN LATE JUNE - AFTER THE CAMPAIGN FINISHES.

Knog is best known as a cycling accessories brand. But we're designers first. A small team of hungry creatives, engineers and designers who like to disrupt everything. Especially the boring. Especially the stuff that people have resigned to "it'll always be that way".

Yep, those are the feathers we like ruffling. We had a great campaign with the Oi bike bell in 2016 which has gone on to sell 1 million units around the world, and win several design awards. THANK YOU for your support! We are humbled.

But cycling is just one outdoor activity. We want to extend the reach of our consumers to the campsite, running trail and beyond.

So that's why we're back here on Kickstarter. We want to see if you - the Kickstarter audience - agree. We think it's a great product, of course. We've done our homework, met retailers and consumers, all who think Bandicoot is a good idea. But there's no more valuable validation data than someone parting with their hard-earned money (even if only a bit) to support the product.

THANK YOU! IF YOU'D LIKE TO SUPPORT THE BANDICOOT, PLEASE PLEDGE, SHARE THE CAMPAIGN LINK AND SUPPORT ON SOCIAL...

Risks and challenges

Shipping: To get a very fast, very reliable, to-the-door service can come with a painful price tag. Since the Bandicoot's price is market-leading, we want to keep costs down, but not have a poor logistics partner. Our logistics team have explored the best options for each region to make sure we can track to the door in most occasions, but it does not cost the earth!
