THE STRETCH
THE TALK
THE WHAT
We’ve designed a bicycle bell, Oi. We think it’s a bit different. We hope you like it. If you do, why not help us bring it to life?
THE WHY
Bike bells have been domed since they were invented in 1877. In which time we’ve sent man to the moon, cloned a sheep, and created hundreds of different styles of beautiful bicycle, yet not reimagined this simple analogue device. What if it wasn’t a dome? What if it didn’t protrude from your handle bar like a blister?
We set out to design a totally new bell where form and function played an equal part. A bell with a beautiful tone, but also a remarkable style and choice of materials that embodies a rider’s personality. We wanted to embrace a variety of riding genres, without compromising any.
THE WHO
We're designers first. A small team of hungry engineers and industrial & graphics creatives who like to challenge everything. Especially the basics. Especially the stuff that people don’t think is worth changing. Yep, that’s the stuff we like changing.
THE HOW
The Oi bell's shape originates from its home - the handle bar. Our design team explored hundreds of iterations in designing the style. Then tested and prototyped different widths, depths, materials, curvature, actuators, springs and more to get to the optimum design.
As with all our designs that reach this stage, we have applied for patent and registered the design. //Design Registration applied for: No. 201610483 //Provisional Patent applied for: No. 2016900305
THE LOOK
Where bells usually protrude up or out, Oi doesn’t. It appears to hover around the handle bars. In one sense, it's discreet. But in another, it stands out as unrecognisable.
THE SOUND
We tested numerous prototypes to get the perfect pitch, length of ring, and volume. With a spring-loaded actuator built into the mount, the strike of the bell is firm and fast, allowing a good balance of volume and longevity of sound. Our bell actually has several pitch tones - one core and several supportive higher tones to ensure it's unmistakable and safely heard. To compare it to a musical instrument, where some bells play a single note, Oi plays a chord. Hear it here for yourself...
The bell-off...
THE FINISHES
There are five styles. The standard aluminium model comes in 4 finishes: brushed aluminium; brass-plated; copper-plated; and black. The top of the range, "treat yourself” model is made from titanium.
THE SIZE AND SPEC
The bells fit on almost all cylindrical bars. The SML Oi is for the common 22.2mm bar, and with the "spacers" that come in the pack, the LRG Oi is for all bar sizes up to 31.8mm. The Oi will also work on any aero bar with a 16mm cylindrical section (usually near the stem).
After you pledge, we'll be in touch to ask for your choice of size.
THE MOUNT
What about the handle-bar cables? No worries. Built into the shape of the mount is a cable management system. So not only does it allow the bell to look and sound uninterrupted, it also helps gather your cables (for the organiser inside us all).
What about getting it on the bar. Again, not a thing. Just pop it over, give it a quick tighten up, and you're good to go. No sliding down the handlebars, no dismantling and re-assembling.

RISKS AND CHALLENGES
Production:
We’re in the fortunate position of having many years of experience designing and manufacturing bike products. Therefore, we understand the risks that can occur in the production process. As with any physical item, flaws not picked up in the rigorous testing phase are possible. That’s why Knog offers warranty on parts and production of 24 months.
Delivery:
One challenge we have considered is blasting past our funding goal and coping with a larger direct-to-consumer delivery than we're used to. However, we have already planned for this and have lined up several options for third party logistics, all of whom have crowdfunding expertise.
