UPDATE: Stretch Goals - Paper Upgrade, $1750 - UNLOCKED!
We did it! Now that the campaign has been funded, it's time for some stretch goals. The first stretch goal is pretty modest - at $1750, the paper stock will get an upgrade to a smoother finish that will help the colours pop even more.
Scriptbook PDF, $2000
At the $2000 mark, all backers will receive a PDF of the original scripts for Where Is Zog? and the "Survivors" short story, as well as the thumbnail sketches for each page (which are drawn on the script pages). Perfect for process junkies!
Where Is Zog? was pitched as a webcomic for the Heavy Metal website in the summer of 2015, ran on the site from November 2015 to November 2016, and will now see print in November 2017!
I've wanted to do a printed collection of Zog for a while now, and have finally decided to test the Kickstarter waters to make it happen.
Where Is Zog? is the story of Grum and Zill, who are the survivors of a crash landing on an uncharted planet. They latch onto the idea of finding Zog to give themselves hope and direction, but that's only useful if they don't get themselves eaten by space monsters.
Grum and Zill's fast-paced misadventures combine punchy comedy and the after-effects of alien colonialism. As our bumbling heroes encounter (and accidentally offend) various cultures, they learn more about the impact of a Kultaari science expedition on the planet's inhabitants. How much that information will help them in the desperate search for Zog is another matter entirely.
Inspired by the music of GWAR, '70s sci-fi, and colonial histories, the book will be a 92 page, 9" x 6" landscape format softcover trade paperback which collects the 52 HeavyMetal.com strips and "Survivors," a 16 page short story, along with a 15 page prose section, "Zill's Field Guide." Printing will be handled by PageMaster in Edmonton, and the files are already good to go. Not sure if it's something you'd be into? You can read the Heavy Metal strips online before you decide whether you want the glorious print book to grace your shelves (you totally do, FYI).
Praise for Where Is Zog?
"The story is fast-paced and the art is delightful. It’s quirky, weird, odd, and hella colourful." - Dena Burnett, Splashes and Speech Bubbles.
"... as if someone took a PG-13 version of the original Heavy Metal (1981) animated film short “So Beautiful and So Dangerous” and stuck it in a blender with Undertale, 2011 ThunderCats, and Rick and Morty..." - Jerry Whitworth, Nerdfect Strangers
Jeff Martin has been writing and drawing comics full-time since 2013. He's going to stop talking in the third person now, because we all know he's the one writing this. The first notable work of my comics career was Redcoats-ish: Jeff Martin's War of 1812, published by Renegade Arts Entertainment. It's what I'm drawing in that picture! That was followed by the first brick in the foundation of a self-publishing empire, Hockeypocalypse Season 1: The Battle of Alberta. There are three volumes in the Hockeypocalypse series now. It was followed by the all-ages graphic novel Wrestlemon, and, now, Zog. I've also drawn a webcomic about space wrestlers for many years - HEAT: The Space Age of Pro Wrestling. What I'm saying is I've got a ton of experience putting books together and getting them into the hands of readers, which is going to be a great help during the Kickstarter fulfillment process.
WHAT YOU GET
Let's talk about what really matters, here - what you're getting!
$5 and up - Digital Book - It's a DRM-free PDF of the book, emailed to you on the day the payments process!
$20 and up - you get a signed physical copy of the book! $30 gets you an original sketch in your book, and $40 gets you some sweet prints added in.
For $130, you get the book AND can commission a piece of original art of anything you want!
Are you a retailer or a librarian? Do you want to stock Zog? Well I can help you out with that. The retailer support levels will get you 5-10 copies of the book and some promo posters to put up in your store!
If you're in the greater Edmonton area and backing the campaign (thank you!), your shipping fee is going to be counted as an upgrade on your pledge because I can't localize free shipping that specifically. For example, if you back at the $20 level, you'll get a sketch in your book as if you had backed at the $30 level. Edmonton area retailers will get some extra books and posters thrown in.

Risks and challenges
While there's always potential for something completely unforeseen to gum up the works and slow things down, the book is already done and ready to be sent to the printer as soon as the campaign ends. Fulfillment will begin roughly two weeks later, and the books will be in the hands of backers before Christmas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
