Next Stretch Goal :

25 000 € : TINY HEADS When unlocked, every backer with the Traveller's Kit in their pledge can be a part of the Sedefkar Simulacrum. Each of these backers can send a portait (of themselves a close relative or anyone they want) and I will use the given portrait to draw him or her as one of the tiny heads in the macro picture of the Simulacrum head.

Stretch Goals Unlocked :

20 000€ : A GLIMPSE INTO UNSANITY When unlocked, the Scroll of the head excerpt will have twice the size. Instead of one miniature, Rezvan will draw two miniatures, and three enlightened letters.

15 000€ : THE MILANESE NIGHTINGALE I will create a poster made in the style of the 1920s presenting "Caterina Cavollaro in Aida at the Scala of Milan". Format will be at least 30cm X 40cm. It will be added to every pledge with The Sedefkar Simulacrum (regular or Deluxe) and other pledger can purchase it at the price of 10€.

10 000€ : THE MAD HAND OF SEDEFKAR When unlocked, the excerpt of The Scroll of the Head will be written by an iranian calligrapher, as if it was done by the mad hand of Sedefkar himself!

8 000€ : THE SHROUD Each copy of the sculpture will have its own body shroud. It will be a coton bag to facilitate its transportation and dramatic presentation. Every level with a sculpture will be upgraded with this perk.

6 000€ : THE MAGNIFYING GLASS All the close up pictures of the Simulacrum and not only the head (torso, legs and arms) will be added to the TRAVELLER'S KIT.

The Simulacrum

I am a classically trained sculptor based in Paris. My husband is a Call of Cthulhu Keeper and he often asks me to help him make props for his campaigns. Because he and his players enjoy and appreciate using the props & handouts I create so much, we thought others would too! But I can't do it alone... So, if you would like to own a fine-art quality prop, and tailor made handouts, you can help us create an accurate sculpture of the Sedefkar Simulacrum by participating in this kickstarter campaign!

The Sedefkar Simulacrum is a prop, licensed by Chaosium, for the Call of Cthulhu Campaign : Horror on the Orient Express. It is intended for keepers and gamers but we hope all Lovecraft enthusiasts and amateurs of weird artifacts will find it intriguing.

The sculpture of the Sedefkar Simulacrum will be cast in polyurethane; when assembled, it will be 21 cm (8 inches) long. It will be composed of six parts (head, legs, arms and torso) that will be assembled with a clever magnetic system so when put together it will look like a reduced model of the real thing.

After the sculpture is cast in Greece, it will be hand-painted by me - Delphes. Each sculpture will be one of a kind. Each will have its own signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.

I have worked very hard to figure out how to paint The Simulacrum in a way that matches the description given in the books: a changing color "according to strength of the light bathing it". As such, I will use a traditional technique where I apply successive layers of fine pigments. It increases the colors’ effects in the patina, so that the material looks like metal and copper, wood and ceramic. With your investment you will get a unique artifact, hand made in a traditional way.

The Simulacrum is different from others Mythos sculpture: it doesn't represent an Elder God or an alien creature but a human form that must evoke both strangeness and terror. Since it is supposed to be the very first human-shaped sculpture ever created, perhaps even before humanity was born, it should stem from some ancient civilizations, without being specific to any of them.

Did you ever wish to play Horror on the Orient-Express with a real sculpture of the Sedefkar Simulacrum? Now is your chance!

UPDATE : now this perk include a shroud - this will be a coton bag to facilitate its transportation and dramatic presentation.

UPDATE :

The Female Torso and Head

The description of the Simulacrum in the HoTOE campaign states that "As more segment are joined, (…) each person is more and more reminded of his or her own features", so I thought "how can you simulate that with a sculpture ?". Plus I always thought there was no reason to think that the Simulacrum was, by default, masculine.

That's why I decided to propose a female torso. So people who pledged for the simulacrum will be able to choose between a female and a male torso when they receive the survey at the end of the campaign.

Of course some pledger may want both, because it seems the best way to convey to your player the ever changing essence of the Sedefkar Simulacrum: imagine how it can be used as a theatrical device for the game – showing different parts to different players and then letting them discover in game that they did not see the same sculpture. Those people can choose to order the second torso as an add-on.

The female torso
The female torso

It could have been a stretch goal, but I decided against. The Simulacrum is supposed to be in the semblance of humanity so it should be both female and male. It's time to take a stand : yes, I believe on gender equality in the face of unspeakable horrors !

Both the heads look fine with the torso, so you can always play with them. The "female" head (I just call it like that to differentiate them, but both heads can be combined with the male or female torso), is more about subtle change in expression. You can graduate between the "female" head (when the investigators collect it) which is more suffering, and disturbing, and the "male"head which seems more angry and evil (when having the Simulacrum begins to feel like a constant nightmare).

Of course, both torsos and heads will fit in the altar.

Both torsos an heads, side by side
Both torsos an heads, side by side

A supplementary torso can be purchased as an add-on for people at THE SEDEFKAR SIMULACRUM pledge and beyond. You can purchase it by adding 30 € to your order.

A supplementary head can also be purchased as an add-on for people at THE SEDEFKAR SIMULACRUM pledge and beyond. You can purchase it by adding 20 € to your order.

At the end of the campaign, every Simulacrum pledger who didn't order a supplementary head or torso will receive a survey so they can choose which head or which torso they want to have.

The Simulacrum's Altar

During the game tests with the Simulacrum, we saw that keepers wanted to dramatise the display of the Simulacrum. One way would be to let him hidden, but since the Simulacrum presence should be felt at all time, most keepers and players prefer to keep him on sight. When doing that, the worst thing to do would be to put it directly on the game table, since it would trivialize the sculpture. So I had the idea to create a special altar, that would help  keepers to make the Simulacrum even more ominous when on display. It was made to make the Simulacrum look like a recumbent statue, with, like in the medieval tradition, an animal at its feet. Except this time it's not exactly a dog or a cat…

On the altar you will find an imprint that can host each piece of the Simulacrum while your players reassemble it. The altar will be made for both the regular and the Deluxe version.

The altar will glow in the dark. The effect will also work with a black light. The whole altar will not be phosphorescent but there will be an aura effect around the Simulacrum, so you can use that for dramatization (when the sculpture is whole for the fist time, you can for example put the black light on, or turning all lights of in the room, to create this effect of a greenish, almost bioluminescent glow). Of course the glowing paint can not be seen under normal conditions.

This is a prototype, final colors will be different (less blue, and more grey or brownish)
This is a prototype, final colors will be different (less blue, and more grey or brownish)

The Simulacrum's Altar for the regular version can be purchased as an add-on. You can purchase it by adding 65 € to your order + 10 € to your shipping fees if you live outside of the E.U.

For the Deluxe version, you can purchase the altar by adding 86 € to your order. If you live outside U.E. you should add 20 € for shipping cost. (Sorry about that, but I can do much about the international postal fees and the altar will be really big.) If you pledge for this, your box will be sized to be able to fit the altar and the simulacrum.

If you want to add this to your order but don't know how to do it, see the F.A.Q. at the bottom of this page.

You can see two receptacles at the bottom, that can be use to collect some fluids during an unspeakable ritual.
You can see two receptacles at the bottom, that can be use to collect some fluids during an unspeakable ritual.

The Traveller's Kit

The traveller kit is a printed complement to the Sedefkar simulacrum. For now it will consist of four high quality handouts:

• A scientific 1920's paper with a scholarly article, and a translation of the Scroll of the Head by Bill Walsh, doctoral student of Ottoman history and several-decade Call of Cthulhu fan. It can be used as a description for your players or it will be really easy to use as a prop during the HotOE campaign.

• A fragment of the scroll reproduced on a Deluxe Paper with an original and disturbing Persian miniature (you know… as in the painting, not the RPG miniature), by Rezvan Farsijani, an Iranian stylist and researcher living in Paris who studied this traditional art.

The writing will be as accurate as possible and the language will be supervised by Bill Walsh.

UPDATE : The Scroll of the Head will be written by an iranian calligrapher, as if it was done by the mad hand of Sedefkar himself!

The Fragment of the Scroll of the Head
The Fragment of the Scroll of the Head

• A picture of the magnified surface of the Simulacrum (so you can see that the head surface is made of tiny repeated heads).

UPDATE : now this perk also include 5 more pictures for the magnified surface of the torso, both arms and legs.

• A postcard the player characters can buy if they visit the Louvres during the Paris adventure. The postcard design will be based on real 1920s postcards from the Louvres. It will represent the XVIIIth century portrait of a certain person with connections to the simulacrum history (keepers should know what we are talking about). This postcard can also be purchased alone.

UPDATE : The Deluxe Simulacrum

For those who want a more imposing version, I propose the Deluxe edition of the Simulacrum. Even if the inspiration is the same, it's a rather different sculpture. It will be cast in polyurethane and when assembled it will be a full 34 centimeters long (around 13.5 inches). After it is cast in Greece, it will be hand-painted by me to make it unique.

FIRST EDITION (now Sold Out) : It will be shipped in a hand made luxury archive storage box. There will only be 15 copies available. Each will have its own signed and special certificate of authenticity with number going from 1 to 15.

UPDATE : FIRST EDITION pledgers can now pledge for a Deluxe altar : it costs 86 €. If you live outside U.E. you should add 20 € for shipping cost. If you pledge for this, your box will be specially sized to be able to contain the altar and the sculpture.

SECOND EDITION (20 copies) : It will be shipped with a Deluxe altar. The Altar will be 45 centimers long (18 inches) and will figure a Byakhee as the animal at the feet of the Recumbent Simulacrum. Each order will have its own signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.

UPDATE : now this perk include a shroud - this will be a coton bag to facilitate its transportation and dramatic presentation.

The Eye of Light and Darkness

The Eye of Light and Darkness bas-relief was created for Ben Patey's Masks of Nyarthotep Prop Set Kickstarter. It is available again here for about the same price.

The Eye measures 7" x 4" (18 cm x 11 cm), and is split down on the middle, in two parts.

A lot of thought went into the making of this item. It is supposed to be a piece of the red pyramid, the first true smooth-sided pyramid located in Dashur, built to repulse the Black Pharaoh. But this is puzzling, if the pyramid is smooth-sided, there shouldn't be any carving on it. So I did some research; the red pyramid was not always red, it used to be cased with limestone but only a few of these stones now remain at the corner of the construction. I imagined that the Eye of Light and Darkness was hidden somewhere behind the limestone and when the limestone fell apart, the relief was revealed but still covered with a layer of coating composed of small stones brought by the desert. I tried to reproduce the results, the reddish aspect and the effects of time. Thinking of the reddish granite stone beneath the limestone, burning and drying under the sun for ages, I knew then how to show the burning secret of the red pyramid covered by the smooth limestone.

The Project

I began this project because my husband is an active roleplayer, when I talked about this, a lot of people, including one of the original author of the campaign, Christian Lehmann, encouraged me to put it out there. We did a first try, but it was not successful, because we did some mistake due to lack of experience – the more obvious one was not to wait until we were sure the new edition of the campaign was available to the public !

We worked very hard since that time, to be able to propose a more affordable version of the Sedefkar Simulacrum without sacrificing the quality or our security standards for the casting.

We need funds to pay for :
• the casting of the sculpture (it will be done in Greece by a professional and renown caster).
• the professional printing of the labels and other props.
• materials and handwork for the boxes.
• Packaging.
• Shipping costs.

The 5000€ goal should allow us to begin production.

What the Writers said about our Simulacrum

Other Perks

We will also be working with Jeff Carey, aka Mr. Shiny, who ran the Chaosium Kickstarter Horror on the Orient Express campaign in Indianapolis last August for the GenCon… using the Deluxe Simulacrum prop! Jeff told me he really enjoyed using the prop in his campaign and it was so rewarding to hear him say my prop "looked like a work of art worth more than the current price."

If 4 people or more pledge for the "LES FLEURS DU MAL" level, they will have a special session with Mr Shiny, putting a new twist on the Parisian Chapter of the Horror on the Orient Express. This event will even take place in a typical Parisian setting. Talk about an immersive experience !

Stretch Goals

After we hit our goal, we will propose stretch goals :

6 000€ : When unlocked, all the close up pictures of the Simulacrum and not only the head (torso, legs and arms) will be added to the TRAVELLER'S KIT. UNLOCKED!

8 000€ : When unlocked, each copy of the sculpture will have its own body shroud. A coton bag to facilitate its transportation and dramatic presentation. Every level with a sculpture will be upgraded with this perk. UNLOCKED!

10 000€ : When unlocked, the excerpt of The Scroll of the Head will be written by an iranian calligrapher, as if it was done by the mad hand of Sedefkar himself ! UNLOCKED!

15 000€ : THE MILANESE NIGHTINGALE When unlocked, I will create a poster made in the style of the 1920s presenting "Caterina Cavollaro in Aida at the Scala of Milan". Format will be at least 30cm X 40cm. It will be added to every pledge with The Sedefkar Simulacrum (regular or Deluxe). UNLOCKED!

20 000€ : A GLIMPSE INTO UNSANITY When unlocked, the Scroll of the head excerpt will have twice the size. Instead of one miniature, Rezvan will draw two miniatures, and three enlightened letters.

25 000 € : TINY HEADS When unlocked, every backer with the Traveller's Kit in their pledge can be a part of the Sedefkar Simulacrum. Each of these backers will send a portait (of themselves a close relative or anyone they want) and I will use the given portrait to draw him or her as one of the tiny heads in the macro picture of the Simulacrum head. Position in the picture will depend on the level of pledge. If I don't have room for everyone to fit I will either make a bigger drawing, or another head macro picture that will be add to every pledge with the Traveller Kit. If unlocked, I will give further instruction about those portraits at the end of the campaign, and the deadline for sending them.

30 000 € : HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT when unlocked every backer with the Simulacrum in its pledge will receive 6 printed copies of original drawings done by myself representing each part of the Simulacrum in context, from the point of view of the characters, when they find each part during the campaign. The drawings will be consistant with the sculpted simulacrum, and can of course be presented to the player as a visual support to dramatize each discovery.

After this, we will offer further improvements to these handouts of Horror on the Orient Express. Anyhow, we will continue to update our stretch goals as we go along.

Why Pledge now ?

Much effort and dedication has gone into putting these specialty items together. This crowdfunding opportunity may be the only way to acquire such one-of-a-kind props as they will most likely never be offered commercially again. If you are a true fan of the Horror on the Orient Express and wish to enhance your gaming experience, this is a truly unique opportunity to do so.

Risks and challenges

We feel confident that we will be able to provide all the props in the defined time frame. We have been cautious with the proposed timeline so that we can allow for any adjustments to be made along the way.

Our only foreseeable issue might be if the demand for the props exceeds our estimated expectations. In that event, we would change the completion deadline for any new orders. Of course, we would honor first come, first served so all the original orders would ship first, per the current deadline.

We have found a ready-made wood box to contain the main sculpture that we think is perfect. We are confident this model will continue to be available in the future but should it not, we may need to change it for future orders so the box could vary from the one shown in the video and pictures. Although we do not think it will be an issue, please be aware of this possible change.

We are aware that the situation in Greece seems worrying. I am working on contingencies plans, but even with everything that is happening, the greek team is still my first choice. I have contacts with other molders in Asia, but I'm not confident with the quality of their work since I never worked with them before. I know molders in France but their price are too high and they have very busy schedules, so it would make me loose money and time.

The cast team in Greece is very good and we will try everything in our power to work with them. The only things preventing them not to work on this project would be if they could not buy the materials or receive money from the banks. So worst case scenario : I will go to Greece and will bring them the materials they need directly at home, and I will pay them in cash. I know very well the team, I trust them, and I'm confident they very much want to work on this project (I talk with them on regular basis).

As frequent contributors to other crowdfunding events, we think communication is key. We will send updates at least once a month until completion so that you are kept in the loop at all times. We feel that, as pledge contributors, you are our collaborators and you should have a voice in the decision making.

    LES FLEURS DU MAL

At this level, the backer will receive all the items of the FIRST CLASS ORIENT EXPRESS, including stretch goals.

The altar will be signed by the artist exclusively for this level.

Additionally, all will be invited in Paris for a special meal with the artist.

As a mini-stretch goal, if there are 4 or more backers at this level, Jeff Carey (Mr Shiny) will travel to Paris to lead an immersive version of the Paris chapter of Horror on the Orient Express, which is suitable for players new to the campaign and will be entertaining for those already familiar.

Transportation, lodging and meals (except the one mentioned) are not included.

The encounter in Paris should take place in June 2016 (subject to change). Of course we will try to adjust to every pledgers obligations, but everyone has to be in Paris at the same time !
