Dead Cat is a bluffing and push your luck game that can be played in under 10 minutes.
It is family friendly, and the box is designed to be portable, so that it is light and convenient to carry around. You can comfortably play Dead Cat during a train ride or on a plane.
We will include rules in English, German and Italian. If you would like another language to be added leave a comment and if enough people are asking for it we will include it as well.
You are one of the assistants to Erwin Schrodinger, the famous physicist, who just entered the laboratory. Having a cat in one hand and a box in the other he announces that he finally cracked the wonders of quantum physics.
Confused you listen to him as he tells you that as soon as he puts the cat into the box nobody can say if it is still alive or already dead. After he finished his elaborate lecture on cats and boxes he finally puts the cat into the box. Before leaving the room he orders you and your colleagues to watch the box closely.
As soon as your boss has left the room you turn to the other assistants. You offer a wager on who can guess best how long the cat is already dead. After accepting the others decide to meet back in one week's time to determine the winner.
Sneaky as you are you are already planning to come back at night and take a peek. After all who deserves to win more than you?
In Dead Cat, you try to guess how long the cat in the box is already dead while misleading your opponents.
When it's your turn you have two options: you either look into the box and change your bet, or you announce that the cat is dead.
If you decide to look into the box, you take a card from the box deck, look at it in secret...
...and put it on top of the time deck.
Now bet on how long the cat is already dead, take your betting die and change it to another side, you choose which one as long as it is not the same as before.
Here is the tricky part though: your bet should be as close to the dead cat as possible but on the other hand you don’t want to give away it’s position or the fact that you might not have seen one. For this reason, you also want to consider the dice of the other players who might have already seen a dead cat.
After you are done the game moves to the next player.
If you decide to announce the death of the cat the round ends but you can’t change your bet.
You start revealing cards from the top of the time deck until you find a dead cat or there are no cards left. In the first case, the player with the closest bet to the number of revealed cards wins the round, in the latter case the player with the highest number wins. In the case of a tie both player receive a point.
The winning player or players receive a scoring token to keep track of their points. Whoever scores four points first, wins.
You can find the complete write up of the rules here.
16 ALIVE CAT CARDS
4 DEAD CAT CARDS
The game design is inspired by a thought experiment of Erwin Schrodinger, an Austrian physicist responsible for significant developments in quantum theory.
Since quantum physics is a rather complicated discipline, he developed imaginative scenarios to help non-physicists understand it. The most famous of these thought experiments is the cat in the box, better known as “Schrodinger’s Cat”.
He imagined a cat in a box together with a capsule of nerve gas. The Nerve gas would be released randomly based on the decay of a radioactive isotope. That meant that as long as nobody would look into the box nobody could say if the cat is alive or dead. He concluded that the cat was at the same time dead and alive and only looking into the box and observing the cat would make one of the two states reality.
Schrodinger wanted to explain a phenomenon that is causing physicists a lot of trouble even until today. If you observe a tiny particle you are changing its state; by observing it, you influence it, and can't determine its “neutral” state.

Risks and challenges
As it is a card game, the production process is relatively simple and straightforward. However, like any project, there are potential risks that could delay its fulfilment. At the moment the most serious of these risks is the chance that our cat dies.
Jokes aside, we are planning to deliver the game between May and June. This scheduled is taking the upcoming Christmas season and the Chinese New Year as possible delays into consideration.
We do not expect to have any problems with our printer as we have decided to go with a well established one. Although they produce in China, they are well known for their quality control.
Amazon will handle shipping, so again we do not expect a major delay from the procurement site as we would with an unestablished service provider.
Overall, we are going with the most reliable, proven and efficient option, and we want to guarantee a high level of satisfaction to all our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
