Since 1995, Renaissance Adventures has built a thriving company based upon the idea that an exciting roleplaying game can be used for so much more than just a diversion on Friday night. Adventure Quest is the realization of that dream.

So then, what is Adventure Quest, and why is it so unique? What follows are four ways to answer that question:

  • For Parents and Educators
  • For Gamers
  • For Entrepreneurs
  • For Everybody ("Don't take our word for it!")

With the talents of publication designer Harper Stone and head artist Tod Wills, this book will be truly grand. Remember, if you know someone who would love Adventure Quest, forward this on to them!

Have you ever wanted to engage your kids in a shared story that is as compelling as the video games or movies that they love? Do you wish there was some way to integrate experiential learning into the lessons you share? Are you intimidated by the complexity of other roleplaying games, or put off by the fact that most of these games have adult themes or do little more than emphasize imaginary combat while the players sit around?

Adventure Quest is an exciting, outdoor, interactive live-action roleplaying game where the participants band together to overcome challenges and become the heroes of a mythic quest. This game system has been used as a tool to facilitate:

  • Experiential Learning. Adventure Quest naturally develops critical thinking and decision making skills, but even “core subjects” like mathematics, history, finances, language arts, and others can be taught within the context of the quest’s challenges.
  • Teamwork and Individual Expression. No one can accomplish the quest’s goals by themselves. It requires teamwork. Yet it is not merely the sum of all the members together that create success. Rather, it is each participant’s unique strengths that make them so critical to the success of the group.
  • Responsible Empowerment. The participants are the heroes, and with it comes great power. This is exciting and empowering! Within the world of the imagination, participants make decisions – and mistakes – in an environment that is responsive and yet safe. Consequences matter in the game, and the players naturally learn responsibility even as they are empowered.
  • A Tool for Growth. Adventure Quest is so fun, and acts as such a great tool for experiential learning, that parents, teachers, and other educators can use in-game benefits as a reward for such things as academic improvement, completion of chores, other countless other responsibilities.

There are a plethora of RPGs on the market. We love many of them, but there is nothing quite like Adventure Quest. Perhaps it is because it originated as a live-action roleplaying game, engineered from a completely different perspective of action and story, that makes Adventure Quest unique. Check out the video to see some of these differences.

Behind the curtain of Renaissance Adventures' programs is a game system that integrates the lessons learned as a LARP and that sense of wonder and adventure that every gamer loves.

A Unique Focus on Story and Imagination
  • Story. Storytelling is not a lost art! Adventure Quest game rules stress the impact on the story, and is not rigidly bound to “power gaming.” Core Powers that anyone can choose at the beginning are just as crucial to epic heroes as the green adventurer.
  • Imagination. Imagination is not a forgotten skill! Play any race you can think of. Attempt any feat you would like to do. Play with boffers or with dice, or with no equipment at all. The rules do not constrain your imagination.
  • Empowerment. The “low level character” is not worthless around legendary heroes! Adventure Quest is a skill-based game system at its root, with the most important powers accessible to anyone. An easy Path-based progression unlocks specialized Heroic and Paragon Powers that grant great boons, but not overwhelming power dynamics.
  • Diversity. There is wonder in the ancient and the innovative alike! The game world of Thael is incredibly diverse, crafted as a fantasy analog of Earth’s cultures, historical epochs, and mythology. The game’s magic system draws from myriad philosophies of magic in popular culture and ancient myth.
The Mechanics Are Exciting and Swift!
  • Simple Combat. Action in combat should be exciting and intense, flowing in your imagination as it would in a compelling novel. Adventure Quest does not bog combat down with math, Hit Points, or any other “whittle down” tedium. A hit to the arm incapacitates it. A wound to the leg means you must limp. A hit to the torso, and your character is knocked out. The use of powers in the LARP combat is easy to remember and enact. And in the Tabletop game, combat is quicker than most other tabletop roleplaying games.
  • Epic Successes and Botches = Excitement. The frequency and impact of an epic success or botch in the tabletop game contributes a lot of fun and drama. The legendary hero cannot waltz into a den of goblins knowing the outcome – there is always an element of danger. Critical successes and failures are a part of every facet of the game, not just combat, and happen often enough to keep the characters on their toes.
  • Intuitive Scene Structure. Using the “scene” as the basic building block of the game is intuitive and fun. After all, as we play, we create a story, and a scene is defined loosely from the plot dynamics. An extended combat with a goblin horde and then troll minions is one scene; questioning the prisoners during an exciting chase is the next scene. Most powers grant per-scene uses, based on your rank in that power.
  • One Rule to Rule Them All. The game mechanics are consistent and universal throughout all the paths and powers.
  • Play Almost Any Conceivable Race. The unique fantasy setting supports a rich variety of races. Either play with the assigned powers of your racial type, or choose racial advantages, disadvantages, and spend experience points to purchase any number of racial powers that are logical for your race.

As we have mentioned, Adventure Quest is the cornerstone program of a thriving business. Renaissance Adventures has grown nearly every year and has been debt free since its inception. Our vision is not to keep this program and its secrets to ourselves, but to share the adventure with other like-minded leaders!

We are looking for enthusiastic entrepreneurs that have the creative spirit and love of kids to spread this great program. There are a number of avenues that may be open to you:

Risks and challenges

There are very few, if any risks. Renaissance Adventures has playtested this game system, revising and perfecting it since 1995. It is a complete, post-playtest draft. Thousands of kids and teens have participated and given their input; hundreds of adults have either played this on their own or led the game with kids. Now after an incredibly successful kids program that has expanded nearly every year since its inception, we have the core system finished and already published as a “Working Draft,” and much of the advanced game rules ready for the final stages of publication design. Just as another point of reference, we have a library of over 200 original adventure modules written specifically for the Adventure Quest system that has each seen anywhere from eight to forty independent playtest groups go through the quest. We will not lack in product expansions, given modest financing.

While much of the work has already been done to get the core book polished, we need the additional funds to commission more artwork, and to pay for the work that it takes to see a game system shapeshift from a computer document to a cohesive and beautiful series of soft-cover books. The publisher, artists, writers, editors, and just about everyone else involved are folks that we have worked with before and have an excellent relationship with.
