About

A Year in Kingcombe is a nature diary that, through words and pictures, tracks the changing seasons in one very special corner of the English countryside.

The UK has lost 97% of its wildflower meadows since the 1930s. One of the only places left where the land has never been treated with herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers is at Kingcombe Meadows in Dorset. The 450 acres of wildflower meadows, woodlands and rolling hills around the Dorset Wildlife Trust's centre here offer a glimpse of what British farmland used to be like before the age of industrial agriculture.  Do check out the video above if you haven't, to get a taster of it for yourself!

"Anita's writing has a quality that sets it apart: full of literary and cultural allusion, detailed and forensic description, clarity of thought, humour and, above all, a rich humanity. A Year in Kingcombe combines all these into a delightful book that deserves a wide readership. So read, re-read, and enjoy.  And then visit this unique place, to experience its wonders for yourself." - from the introduction by Stephen Moss (President of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and author of Wild Hares and Hummingbirds)

The book is written, the illustrations are done, the layouts are being finalized - all I need is that final push (or Kick!) to get it over the line and out into the world. That's where you come in!

There's a whole bunch of rewards on the right of this screen so you can choose how much you'd like to pledge and what you'd like in return - books, greetings cards, a writing workshop, artwork, a stay at Kingcombe... you choose. And just to underline: you won't be charged a thing unless the budget is reached and the project goes ahead.

Here's a sneak peek inside the book:

sample pages of the book: February - with scarlet elf cup
sample pages: November - with bracken

And here are some of the illustrations from the book that you can own as a high-quality signed print if you choose that pledge.

Prints to buy along with the book

And the 'June bug' - a six-spot burnet moth - will feature on the greetings card. This comes along with a plant-your-own-flowers seed token, and it means that one tree is planted in a deforested area on your behalf by the fantastic printers, 1 Tree Cards, in collaboration with the Eden Reforestation project.

Card printed by 1TreeCard. For each card printed, a tree will be planted in an area of mass deforestation. Each card also contains a seed token: soak, tear up, and plant in your garden for maximum pollinator happiness!

I am planning to have the book out in time for the next year - 2020. Income from sales will help the Wildlife Trusts spread their message about creating a more sustainable, biodiverse and pollinator-friendly landscape. And if I exceed my funding goal, this will be shared with the DWT Kingcombe Centre directly to help with their outreach projects. So dig deep - and plant some seeds too...

This project is supported by the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the Somerset Wildlife Trust

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge for any book is to connect to the readers who would welcome it. I am working closely with the Kingcombe/DWT team to have get the book stocked there, and in local bookstores across Dorset, and in Somerset (where I live).

I really wanted this book to not just be informative but to be a beautiful object in itself. And for that I must thank my fantastic designer, Simon Parkin (www.ethicalgraphicdesign.co.uk). Simon is amazingly talented, as well as being the most environmentally friendly person I know! He's hand-painted each month's name as the chapter heading, so you get a kind of colour-chart of the year too...

Kingcombe is a favourite spot for so many people - and this book is a way of sharing our love of this rare and precious place. With this campaign I aim to spread the word to others, and encourage more people to visit, explore and enjoy this stunningly beautiful corner of the country.

I hope that it will inspire readers to keep nature diaries of their own, to foster a deeper sense of connection with our natural environment. My book is somewhere between a love-letter to the landscape and a plea to all readers: quieten the senses, allow yourself time and space to open up to the riches and the fragility of this world we live in. And if you are moved to write, or paint, or draw, or photograph that fleeting encounter - as I have done - I would love to hear from you! Get in touch at anita@anitaroy.net.
