Insane Roots originally started out as a book blog and in no time at all gained quite the following. In less than a year after the first post, I was offered a publishing contract with Morgan James Publishing. It was a dream come true!
Morgan James is different than other publishing companies in that they are an entrepreneurial publisher. They hold no rights to their author’s work and allow the author to take full control over the marketing campaign!
Since the post of its official release date on the original blog, the followers of Insane Roots, have more than doubled across all major social media sites. Everyone is excited about this book!
The final manuscript has been submitted, the book cover is done and the final review process has begun! At this point, we just need to raise $1,500 for the cost of books to use in the grassroots marketing campaign. Any additional funds will be used to fund the upcoming book tour in February 2016!
My hope is that this will be the first in a series of memoirs recounting the events of my early childhood growing up with a con-artist as a mother. It is essential that this tour be successful in building not only the marketing platform for the additional books in the series, but also in building the foundation for a much larger mission.
During the tour I plan to visit adolescents in family care to share my story with them and show them how writing can change their lives. Children such as myself who come from a broken home often grow up with no one who believes in them. That’s why I have decided to share my story with the world. I want to share the art of believing in yourself and using writing as a tool for self discovery!
By sharing my story and providing mentoring for those interested in exploring writing as an outlet, I hope to inspire as many children and young adults as possible throughout the book tour.
Thank you for your consideration in contributing to this exciting new adventure!
Where will the funds go?
First, printing. Then, getting the word out for Insane Roots and additional books in the series. This involves hundreds of mailings and submission fees, including free advance copies for reviewers and media sources. Beyond this, travel to bookstores, conferences, book fairs, and universities, all of which are not covered by the publisher.
The actual cost of all of this is far more than the Kickstarter goal.
Risks and challenges
One challenge will be purchasing enough copies of the book from the distributor for sale during the tour in February 2016. However, the final copy is almost ready to go and I have already placed enough of a deposit down to cover the first few stops. The support already shown for Insane Roots has been wonderful. I have little doubt it will see a decrease in momentum after it’s release. Therefore, I should be able to pour the proceeds from the first few stops back into purchasing books for upcoming locations.
This does unfortunately pose another challenge in regards to the organizations I am hoping to partner with during the tour. Throughout the tour, I am hoping to connect with children and young adults who come from similarly difficult backgrounds by encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Many of the youth foundations I have contacted require a firm date several months in advance. If I am not able to schedule the tour dates far enough in advance, I may miss out on several opportunities. Should this challenge arise, I will simply need to reach out to a larger number of organizations. Those I am not able to volunteer my time with, I will still offer my support by donating a portion of the book sale proceeds from a location of their choosing once we have the appearance booked.
I am really excited about providing a platform for the Insane Roots Book Series. This is only the first in a series of emotionally charged memoirs recounting my life with a con-artist for a mother and our many adventures. My hope is that these character pieces will offer encouragement and empowerment to those reading them to embrace life’s challenges as lessons in overcoming its many obstacles.
Once this project is funded, there is little risk because Insane Roots will have the foundation needed for continued success. And rest assured, I will certainly do all in my power to keep the momentum going! After all, this is my dream! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
