About this project
THERE'S STILL TIME TO JOIN OUR FOUNDING COMMUNITY!
We are awestruck by the backers who've brought us to our goal, before our Jan 3rd deadline. And we are continuing to invite backers up to the very end -- $33,000 is a bare bones budget. Every dollar we raise above that amount helps to offset Kickstarter/Amazon fees -- and gives us more money to fund the months-long process of editing this film.
As members of our founding community, you will be the first to hear any news about FOLK -- what festival invites us for our world premiere, special events, behind-the-scenes stories; and you will all be thanked as our "founding community" on our website and in the film (our higher-level donors will continue to have the special recognition they've pledged for).
Thank you so much for being our community. There is no way this could have been done without you.
Love and thanks from Sara, Henry and Diana
Part music documentary and part road trip movie, FOLK lets our characters’ lives and their songs do what singer-songwriters have always done: amplify the themes that resonate across our cultural landscape – whether it’s re-defining success in the face of failure, trying to find wholeness in an increasingly fragmented world, or struggling to make sense of the trials and triumphs that make us all so human.
We hope you enjoyed meeting our main characters in our trailer – and that you’re looking forward to getting to know them in our film. They are all wonderful singer-songwriters who are working just under the radar of mainstream American music, their lives playing out in a vibrant sub-culture that few people know about (unless you’re a die hard fan of folk music).
Our documentary is the first to explore that world. It’s a quirky culture that includes house concerts -- where a new breed of mini-moguls roll back the furniture and host their favorite artists for a crowd of 20 or 30 friends; at jammed, 24/7 folk conferences --where would-be stars trade social networking tips by day and gig at night down long corridors of hotel rooms turned into micro-clubs; and in tiny bars and rural festivals, set well back along the blue highways of America.
Like the musicians we are following, we, too have been working in do-it-yourself mode – funding everything ourselves to this point. But now we need your help. It’s time to start editing, and we can’t do it without your support.
The money we raise here will go towards hiring one of the best editors in the documentary world (two of the films she’s worked on have won Oscars for best doc). She’s booked time for us starting in February 2012 – but we have to have the money to lock her in. She’s in constant demand, and we want to make sure we’re on her schedule.
We are looking forward to surpassing our bare bones goal of $33,000 with your help between now and the end of this campaign in early January. As I said in the trailer, if everyone who comes to this site gives $10, we’ll have the $150,000 we need to get this film all the way through the post-production process – and on its way to film festivals in early 2013. We’ll be submitting to the top festivals, including Sundance, Berlin and South by Southwest, where my first doc (Fambul Tok) premiered earlier this year. And we’ll be thanking you every step of the way.
On FOLK, I’m working again with Henry Jacobson, the wonderful cinematographer who shot my first film, Fambul Tok. And we’ve teamed with our good friend Diana O’Donnell, who brings all kinds of producing and networking skills to our work.
Stay tuned in the weeks ahead… We’ll be in touch regularly, and we’ll have some surprises along the way.
