January DevDiary and more!
We hope you all enjoyed the winter holidays!
As the end of January is approaching quickly, it's time for a new DevDiary!
DevDiary - January 2017
Here is a quick summary of the exciting things we can show you today:
0:30 - Biome development: We’re excited to show off the improvements that have been made to the Desert Biome and thrilled to give you the first look at the Polar Biome!
0:42 - Global illumination: Great progress has been made and it will now be quite clear when the night comes (no pun intended). Even without a torch light activated, you'll be able to see something.
0:53 - Building Mode: the Smoothing Tool is now functional and the jetpack can be used indefinitely as long as you stay in the building zone. The virtual grid has been also updated to make it more practical.
1:20 - Physics: a short hovercraft demo to show how we’ve implemented physics into Dual Universe. Engines now push for real, and you have to equilibrate the ship to take into account the physical force reality.
1:40 - A Work in Progress look at the new Nanoformer as well as scanner accessories.
1:54 - Live Test server: every member of the team can now connect and test gameplay and stability on a server running non stop and permanently crowded with hundreds of bots! As always, keep in mind all you see in this video is only pre-alpha rendering, UI and gameplay, nothing's final yet.

Kurock won the Community vote with his Fan Fiction. Congratulations! You can check his story “Experiment Alpha” on the forum here! Other winners, who will get the Novaquark prizes will be announced on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. We can already tell you that, from what we have read so far, the quality is incredibly high and the selection of the winners on our side will be very difficult!
The Crowdfunding effort continues!
We passed the 620k€ mark a few days ago on our Crowdfunding Portal! This means we are less than 30k€ away from being able to include the “Construct vs Construct” feature in the official release (instead of waiting for the first expansion)! For those who might worried about feature creep, rest assured, we have set a cap on the features that might be implemented in the official release to avoid eternal release delays due to an unreasonable number of features. Even if our crowdfunding efforts surpass the 725k€ Bounty System milestone, we won’t implement any additional features in the official release.
A game we love!
As gamers and believers in the crowdfunding system, a lot of us in the Novaquark team played (or play) other crowdfunded games. Some of us are big fans of “Baldur’s Gate” style games such as “Pillars of Eternity”. And yesterday we were really excited to learn that the crowdfunding campaign for “Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire” has begun! If you liked the first one, the second opus already looks very promising!
With the success of the Kickstarter campaign that you made possible, and the help of our private investors - now convinced that there is a real demand for the game - we are able to open a few job positions. This will help us a lot in achieving our planned goals for the Alpha, the Beta and the Official Release! If you’re interested, or if you know someone who may be interested, and meet the requirements for one of the positions listed on our Careers page, don’t hesitate to contact us!
That’s all for now! As always, we are eager to hear your feedback and your questions! See you in February for a new DevDiary!
The Novaquark team.
