We are very passionate about using what we have rather than continuing to use more of what we don’t need. And what we have is an incredible source of 500 year-old water-recovered old growth wood that is stronger, more stable and richer in character compared to new lumber.
Some of these massive timbers began growing before North America was even discovered by the Europeans. They are a piece of North American history that we are luckily enough to transform into stunning eyewear. Harvested during the 19th century and early 20th century logging boom when the rivers around the Great Lakes were used to transport lumber, many sank to the bottom and were preserved in the cold, zero-oxygen environment.
It isn’t easy sourcing water-recovered material, or crafting it into eyewear right here in Canada, but it is the right thing to do. Get on board so we can preserve our planet together. And you're in good hands, whether it's help with a style choice when the campaign finishes, or customer support down the road. Many thanks from Dan and Tim.
Your Lochs will last a long time because they are crafted not mass-produced. 10 layers of cross grained and pressed old growth wood which has grown even stronger having rested under water for over a century. Austrian 5-barrel hinges installed the traditional way – no more spring hinges that stretch out. Five-year limited warranty.
Not all lenses are the same; protect your eyes in style. FDA approved Italian Tinted or Japanese Mirrored Lenses with optional polarization.
Get a truly custom look from eight styles, three wood types and six lens colours. No two pairs are the same because no two people are the same. You don't have to decide until after the campaign and we will make sure that you have lot's of resources to make the right choice.
Sunglasses that don’t slip off your face and flow with the contours of your head for a perfect fit. No slip tips and adjustable nose pads as well as a flex frame that adjusts naturally for all-day comfort – three sizes to choose from.
When the campaign finishes we will send you a lookbook and style guide so that you can browse all the options before making your final choice.
Three years ago, Loch sunglasses was born from a dream for more authentic, eco-friendly eyewear. Using ancient water-reclaimed wood, rather than contributing to deforestation, was an integral part of that dream as we designed frames that were sustainable, strong and stylish. Finally, with hard work and dedication we are ready to launch Loch sunglasses to the world. We just won our local Bear’s Lair business competition and were featured on several news organizations such as CBC and Chex Television, so we know we are on the right track. We now need your help to spread the word of a more sustainable line of eyewear that is made right here in North America.
The journey of Loch began more than 500 years ago when North American forests were teeming with massive old-growth virgin timbers. These unspoiled trees were harvested by our settlers during the logging boom and floated down the fast moving rivers to the Great Lakes; but not all survived the journey. Sinking to the bottom they were preserved in the near zero oxygen environment, achieving unparalleled beauty, quality and character, while also increasing in strength. Undisturbed these timbers lay… until now. We are rewarding three beautiful wood types for you to choose from.
The quest for sustainability began with a decision to not chop down trees in the making of Loch wooden products. An obsession with perfection yielded a unique process to create high quality personal effects capable of countering our disposable culture’s product-to-landfill cycle. Finally, sustainability means a symbiotic business ecosystem with our suppliers and customers supporting one another on a local level. Sustainable materials save our planet, quality products last longer thus reducing burden on landfills. Manufacturing locally keeps the money in the North American communities, creating jobs of all skill levels to help build a stronger economy.
To make this project as successful as possible in both feedback & sales, we need your help! Whether it’s purchasing a pair, sharing this project on social media or just telling a friend about it, your support is much needed & truly appreciated.
Risks and challenges
Why We Need Kickstarter | In order to produce eco friendly, 100% sustainable glasses for everyone, we need to adapt our frames for a wider range of prescription lenses.
What We Can Do So Far | Our sun-wear frames are ready to go! We have worked tirelessly for two years on perfecting them for fit, style and strength. We are the manufacturers so we control our destiny - no risk of faulty/late shipments from Asia. You and your Lochs will be enjoying the sunny summer months together in a few short weeks.
Funded Project Means Prescription Frames | We guarantee that our frames will work with prescriptions of -2 to +2 polycarbonate lenses upon project completion. We are aiming to bump that up to -4 to +4 if things go really well - and hopefully more.
How You Can Help | We need everyone's help to spread the word on a company that is doing things right by using eco-friendly materials and manufacturing in North America. Loch is committed to quality and sustainability before profit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
