About

The video is a very rough edit of a test shoot for the film.  As you'll see, our actors are phenomenal.

Finding Shelter is our second semester MFA film, written and directed by Rondell Merrill and conceptualized and produced by Leonard House.  We both have an interest in giving voice to the voiceless and using film to address social issues.

Principle photography occurred on March 15 and 17.  Post-production, including editing, sound mixing, and composing, will be completed by May.  We plan to submit this film to various festivals and offer public showings.

Because we shot entirely outdoors, at night, in Chicago, in the middle of March, our expenses were high.  We rented generators for the equipment, an RV for our cast and crew to take breaks and warm up, and an outdoor heater to keep warm between takes.  Our budget also went toward set design, transportation (trunk rental for equipment and gas for both the truck and RV), union-standard catering and craft service for cast and crew for 1 night and 1 daytime shoot, props, costumes, and two hard drives for our footage.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge has passed. We completed filming on March 17th. The footage is clean and backed up in multiple places.

The overnight and daytime shoots were freezing cold. Plenty of hand and foot warmers were used and lots of coffee consumed. Our shoot went very smoothly. Because we had such a phenomenal cast and crew, we we able to have a great time while working hard, despite the frigid temperatures.

The film is now in post production where it will be edited, sound mixed, and scored. We are looking forward to the opportunity to share our film through film festivals and public exhibitions.
