About this project
OH MY LOAVES!!!
Reached the goal with 17 days left in the campaign!! You guys are amazing. I never imagined how much support would find me 8) I am so lucky to have such kind and generous people in my life. Thank you all for making my dream a reality. I cannot find the words to express my gratitude.
Now for the next goal!!! Starting my own shop means there is always another goal. Another step to make the shop better. The next major step is investing in a good laptop. Mine is .... well .... not exactly top of the line....
If I can make it to $7000, Yums will be able to purchase a wonderful laptop to help with client consultations, marketing, accounting and general operations. I will be able to share more pictures, research more ideas, and run a better bakery. If I got this far with my broken down keyboard, imagine what i can do with some solid technology!
I am grateful and in awe of the support. Thank you!!!! Please keep sharing my project. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell your neighbors. Tell that kinda smelly guy on the elevator with you. Everyone wants a bit more sweetness in their life, and I am ready to make it happen!
I have spent the last 2 1/2 years for my life completely focused on my freelance baking. I am intensely lucky to be surrounded by an amazing and supportive group of wonderful people. I am also lucky to have a friend who is much more talented than I in writing, who has graciously written this blurb for me!
"After nearly ten years working and growing local bakeries as well as developing a loyal following, Darcy Scott is looking to open her first official bakery. This charming, quirky, retro-artisan baker has been running the stairs, churning one-cake-at-a-time for long enough — The time has come to sweeten up her city, the lives of the awesome people in it, and open a cute, quirky retail bakery!
With the perfect spot picked, she needs our help to make it all happen: make our edible dreams come true!
How Did She Get Here?
A story in itself; Darcy has never backed down from a challenge. After filling the mouths of friends and family for years with her excessive baked yumminess (care packages really), she finally took the plunge for formal training in 2006. She knew her friends directed her to her true passion as she graduated with honours, received three scholarships (including Excellence in Practical Baking and Leadership Skills Scholarship), completed both her Red Seal and Journeyman Accreditation. Baking is Darcy: "For me, food is love. And with this being true, baking and confections would be the sweetest love."
For the last few years, Darcy has been focussed on her freelance baking business (The Infinite Yums) warming the hearts and bellies of her loyal customers - friends really.
Now, its time for her home to be home again and her quirky little bakery be home for all of us.
Part of Her Community
Every year, Darcy continues to give back to her community through several local charities, which also gives her the wonderful opportunity to test her creative prowess as well as her delicious baking adventures.
* The Festival of Trees - raises funds for the University of Alberta Hospital : 7 years running ... Winner of several People's Choice Awards and several Judge's Awards
* Books2Eat Gala - raises funds for library projects : 2 years running ... Being a huge fan of books, she is very proud to be part of this fundraiser, helping to expand minds and exercising imaginations makes her a happy nerdy girl.
These charities and their projects have solidified Darcy's love of decorating: creating amazing scenes, evoking emotions through edible ingredients.
Her charitable projects have been featured on several prominent websites, including the official Star Wars website, Boing Boing, Neatorama; Cheezburger – to name a few. Lets not forget her brush with celebrity Ashton Kutcher when he featured links to her blog (The Infinite Yums) & projects on both his Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Darcy also strives to remain part of her growing local community by using local ingredients and local suppliers whenever possible. Her philosophy: We can all accomplish more together.
Eat butter. Eat sugar. Eat chocolate. Take a moment out of your hectic day to truly savour the flavours and remember the little joys of life.
"You could grab a cake from a big box store, and it would be all right. But wouldn't you rather have an experience: an edible memory? Doesn't a fresh handcrafted treat sound much better than a thawed slab of overly processed sugar cardboard?"
Local ingredients, sustained enjoyment.
How the Funds Will be Used
* Legal Fees
* Start up Costs
To further grow her business, Darcy plans on adding several new revenue streams to ensure success. Her continued use of social media to stay in contact with her clients, local businesses, and the community-at-large will assist in low-cost marketing efforts to attract and maintain new clients and suppliers.
Darcy is tenacious, adaptable, confident; there is no hurdle we haven't seen her overcome. This new venture is Darcy. She is ready for a flourishing bakery, the cornerstone for her new neighbourhood, where her management experience and ability to develop bakeries will be the key to her success and our developing sweet tooth.
Together we can begin this happily-ever-after by investing the only thing holding her creativity back. Every dollar gets her closer to her dream; every dollar gets the rolling pin rolling."
I have found the perfect place. I have gotten almost everything in place. There is just a few things that still need to be done. Legal fees, start up fees, and a small renovation are needed to get things running.
Check out these slideshows to see some of my favorite things I have made. There may seem to be a lot of them, that is just cause I love what I do so much!!
I have secured almost everything I need. The funds I collect here on Kickstarter will go towards the legal fees, licensing, branding, and start up costs. I'm taking over an existing space, and that means a lot of pricey paperwork. I will also need to make the space my own with a fresh coat of paint, and a couple minor renovations to make the space work more effectively.
You actually made it all the way down here?!? Ok, go ahead, watch this video of me trying to be able to talk on camera... it is almost as funny as my "trailer" ...

Don't believe me? I have proof - People dig my eats! LOL!!
Risks and challenges
Assuming the space of an existing bakery will help reduce some of the initial risks of opening my own shop. The location is amazing, central to downtown, and the bustling Whyte Ave area. The bakery already has a great following, there is a slight chance that some clients may balk at a new owner. With such an integral location, there is a risk the lease may not be renewed in 2015, although the land lord has assured me it will be.
Funding will remain a big challenge as the bakery grows and improvements will need to be made. There is always a risk of equipment breaking down. Shiney new equipment is expensive, and repairs add up quickly.
The new revenue streams will help add to the profits and create a financial buffer. As well a schedule of regular maintenance will help keep repairs to a minimum.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
