My novel will show people what El Salvador was like during the war. It will show my protagonist have a spiritual awakening as well as a sexual awakening.
"Secrets & Lies In El Salvador" is about a young woman who goes to war-torn El Salvador after discovering that her grandfather went there in the early 30s and may have fathered the poet, Roque Dalton. She goes to El Salvador to escape her own personal pain (a rape and subsequent abortion), as well as the betrayal she feels from her mother who never told her that her the truth about the woman who brought her up, the woman Shelly always called her grandmother.
While there, Shelly encounters death at every turn and hears horror stories about massacres and brutal killings. Her host family tells her their secrets while she photographs them. So, Shelly becomes the "Keeper of Secrets."
Shelly is brought to the mountains where she meets a young American who is fighting with the guerrillas. He asks her to risk her life in order to get the news to Americans about what their U.S. dollars are paying for there.
Shelly is angry and feels betrayed by those she trusted most, but when this American (that Shelly has fallen in love with) is killed, she must do something.
Will Shelly be able to make a difference in the lives of the poor and downtrodden in El Salvador? Will she even make it out alive?
Read the book and find out.
Risks and challenges
There will be many challenges in finishing and knowing that it is finished. For this reason, I must choose the best editor I can find for the money as editors can ruin a story just as easily as they can make it better.
I must learn how to market the story so that it gets out into the world for people to read. I expect to get a movie offer, but again, I must be very careful as many movie options never get made.
There will be people saying my story is a lie, that things didn't happen that way. I suppose that always happens to some extent, but there were a lot of cover-ups that included killing journalists. For this reason, there are two journalists that suffered the consequences of a govt. that didn't want the truth to come out. Also the supporting govt. did not want the truth to come out. Hopefully, I will develop my own strategy of dealing with these detractors.
