HOLLANDS is an orchestral-rock-pop band from Brooklyn, NY. Deemed "freak-poppers" by Christopher Weingarten of the Village Voice, HOLLANDS music is inspired as much by Stravinsky and Bach as Bob Dylan, Kanye West and Father John Misty. Formed in 2009, Hollands is the musical "fireworks" of John-Paul Norpoth and Jannina Barefield-Norpoth. HOLLANDS has self-released two EP's in 2009, Faces (EP) and Mother (EP) to critical acclaim. Independently, they broke into the Top 100 of the College Radio (CMJ) charts and captured great reviews from local, national, and international press outlets.
HOLLANDS just finished work on 12 brand new songs for their Debut LP. This Kickstarter will help fund self-release on Vinyl and CD (Digi-Pak) for HOLLANDS' fans and supporters. HOLLANDS' needs $6,500 to produce a limited edition run of (250) vinyl records and (1000) Compact Discs. Please take a moment to preview the songs at Hollands' SoundCloud and we hope you will consider funding this new and exciting release. hollandsss.com
Brooklyn Street Artist DAIN (Elle Magazine, New York, London, and Paris galleries, abandoned buildings, mail boxes, and unexpected locations throughout Brooklyn) has agreed to create the album art for this new release. Dain's unique style of 1950's hollywood glam and surreal urban graffiti is a perfect match for Hollands' music. You can read an interview with DAIN and see some of his work here.
HOLLANDS plans to produce the vinyl with local shop Brooklyn Phono, just down the block from Trout Recording, in Brooklyn, NY. (brooklynphono.com). Hollands t-shirts, stickers, and hooded sweatshirts are produced by Tiny Fish in Rochester, NY. The Digi-Pak CD's for Hollands' previous releases were produced by Discmakers in New Jersey. (www.discmakers.com) Thus, the Hollands' Kickstarter will be a culmination of lots of hard work and "sweat equity" made in the USA. Amazing contributions and incentives from artists Barbara Barefield, Spencer Barefield, and Chris Ward of CTW Metal in Rochester who have donated their time and talents to help us reach our goal.
Following a short break in 2010, (Hollands members married and found themselves in a new home in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn where they share a musical community with other distinct artists) Mr. and Mrs. Norpoth began the process of writing songs for their Debut (LP), recording ideas in bedrooms, closets, and even bathrooms. Basic tracks of drums, electric bass, and electric guitars ensued with Colby Devereux at Copperfish Sound. Overdubs and mixing continued with Adam Sachs and Bryce Goggin at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY.
Hollands recruited talented friends and family for these new recordings, starting out with a seasoned rhythm section. Kenny Grohowski (Lonnie Plaxico/Dapp Theory/DBR) and bassist Jim Robertson (DBR) have worked with Hollands since 2008, touring and recording Mother (EP) in 2009 and helping realize the initial demos and ideas from the home recordings. John-Paul and Jannina tracked vocals, guitars, electric and acoustic violin, synthesizers, honky-tonk pianos, and toy xylophones. Hollands captured some lovely "crooning" by cellist Amanda Gookin, (PUBLIQuartet) recording in the laundry room/office/recording studio. Due to the inescapable abundance of guitar arpeggios in the new demos, Hollands enlisted friend and harpist Katie Andrews (Duo Scorpio) enriching "Great White Shark" with new magic. While visiting and performing in a blighted house (Detroit's Imagination Station) with Jannina's Dad, avant-garde jazz guitarist A. Spencer Barefield (Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Young, Richard Davis) took an incredible guitar solo, recorded on-location from the kitchen of his Detroit home. Mr. Barefield's guitar solo closes out this new debut record, interspersed with operatic vocals and harmonies from singer Jessica Tivens, creating an "army" of haunting vocals and free-improvisation.
Risks and challenges
The risks involved with this project are negligible. Record pressing and CD manufacture require clear communication between artists and developers, designers and band, etc. Hollands is really the distinct collaboration of two musicians (Jannina & John-Paul) with the tireless help and support from many musicians and artists local and abroad.
This KICKSTARTER will help fund a product produced locally and easily shipped once completed. The risks are within the communication between band and the companies involved producing the Vinyl, CD (Digi-PAK), and merchandise manufacturer(s). Hollands also plans to work with local Brooklyn artists, commissioning artwork of a unique branding - thus creating larger appeal. There are risks within the "back and forth" of this process but they don't outweigh the challenges of recording and mixing a full-length debut recording. (recording and mixing of the recording is completed)
Most of the time-sensitive work and budget-intensive challenges have been completed. The last steps necessary for a completed record are also the most rewarding as Hollands brings their new recording to market. This process is also not new to Hollands as they have produced two EP's so far, pressing, promotion, touring, etc. to make sure they reach their audience.
With consideration, Hollands is not producing and bringing to market their first recording, nor their last - so the risks inherent are negligible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
