We're Releasing ESTk - Make your own Dreamcast games

Posted by Elysian Shadows Team (Creator)

How's it going?

We have teased you all with big news and here it is:

We're excited to announce that we're releasing our development kit along side Elysian Shadows. We've been talking about doing this for years in the Adventures in Game Development series, and we're thrilled to officially make plans for its release.

Aside from small miscellaneous tools around the net, up until now, developing for the Dreamcast has only been possible by investing hundreds of hours into building your own toolkit. The ESTk is a complete toolkit, with everything you need to start developing your own Dreamcast game immediately -- no programming knowledge is necessary to dive in. The ESTk is modeled after unity making it welcoming for beginners.

Our tools are as cross-platform as they come. You can create and deploy your games to PC (Windows, Linux & Mac), iOS & Android (Phones and Tablet devices), Ouya, and Dreamcast. In the future, depending on our stretch goals we would like to expand upon this by adding the next generation consoles like Playstation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo 2DS/3DS and Playstation Vita.

How exciting is that? Let us know what you think :)

Thank you for the support everyone! It really means the world to us.

I'm completely amazed at how you've slaughtered the deadline. I haven't been this excited for something like this since I was a kid, and it's great to see all your hard work and effort has not just borne fruit, it gave birth to a giant.

I can't find the words to express how awesome you guys are. You're doing so much for us and I'm glad we all helped you achieve that something great. Least I can do now is have a beer in celebration.

Amazing news! Thank you very much! I would imagine two main questions will come
      out of this:

      1. Will you make it open source?
      2. Will backers be allowed to commercially release games using the toolkit & engine?

I doubled my pledge because you're awesome for doing this.

All I wanna say is I love indie devs, and I dont know any who exposed themself to this extent (so to speak), I wish nothing but success on this campaign, I pledged 15 measily dollars and now I can sit back and wait, almost ridiculous the amount of work that goes into some pompous idiots 15 dollar backing, but thats why we love KS. ES rock, I'm an indie too, I wish I had met you guys in real life, it's even harder alone in your bedroom day after day with no companions, which is why sad as it is you guys are my companions in indie game dev.

GTFO!!! Serious?!? You dudes put the grind in making this engine, so I'm glad that others can experience what passion for a culture can aspire you to make... very nice, team!!! I bet that dude from overseas working on the shenmue remake wishes he held off on that idea just a bit lol! ;)

Sounds amazing! I think you have made a mistake in the update. You forgot to mention Dreamcast when saying what consoles you can deploy your games on. I know it is mentioned in the paragraph above though.
