launching my first watch brand Ikepod in 1996 and having worked since 2003 as
a consultant for brands in the Swiss watch industry, I finally decided to create
a new watch. The development of the prototype was both exciting and difficult
as we had set very ambitious goals.
For more than three years I
have worked with the Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen to
develop this amazing timepiece using the best suppliers and craftsmen the
industry has to offer. The time has come to present this watch to the world and, with your help, kick off the first
absence of genuine industrial design in watchmaking gives new players a fantastic
opportunity to fill a market niche.

I believe Kickstarter is a good platform for
young entrepreneurs to launch a product because they get immediate feedback
from the markets. On top of that it gives the final consumer a superb opportunity
to acquire an exclusive limited edition watch at a fraction of the
future retail price. The reason is simple: the product has not yet been marked
up with advertising and distribution costs. Such an unconventional
introduction to the worldwide markets through
crowd financing for a high-end Swiss precision timepiece has never before been
attempted and if successful we (you and me) will be writing a new chapter in
the watchmaking history.
Switzerland has been the epicenter of
mechanical watch production since the Huguenots brought watchmaking to Switzerland in
the 17th century. Due to globalization and access to cheap labor, many brands
produce their parts in Asia today. The label
"Swiss Made" has unfortunately lost its true meaning. To counteract
this trend, I have made it our mission to manufacture every single part of our
timepieces in Switzerland.
I believe this is necessary in order to create an authentic product that
retains its value over generations. I carefully selected the best suppliers in
the industry in order to meet these high standards. This approach has an impact
on production costs but also ensures that the product will maintain and even
increase in value over time.
my first brand, Ikepod, taught me that a timepiece must first have a
unique look in order to draw the attention of collectors and tastemakers. Our
Hemipode watch even wrote a new page in design history and has picked some
impressive clients such as Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Elton John, Bill
Gates and Robin Williams. They have all bought our watches without even any
outreach toward them on our part. It proved that if you make a superior product
and make sure you are offering innovative design, you can in fact reach a
clientele you never thought possible.
A.Manzoni & Fils?
When we decided to produce the Canopus Weekplanner
under the company name of "A.Manzoni & Fils, We intended to revive this traditional and local
luxury brand, which embodies the spirit and company philosophy we also strive
all began in 1888 in
Arogno ( Lugano), when. following an earthquake, an entire watch production
factory had to be moved piece by piece from the Jura mountains in French Switzerland
to Lugano, about 300 km
away in the Italian part of the country. The main challenge was the stark Swiss
Alps in between the two locations. A fascinating book was written about this
period in watchmaking. This gorgeous, historic factory produced mechanical
watch movements until it closed in 1978.

This all inspired me to revive the old brand through crowd financing for

(the name is derived from the famous côtes de Genève) and dial finish that pays
homage to the pattern that Brazils' most famous garden architect copied from
the Portuguese immigrants and gave to the beaches of Copacabana.

production methods. The tooling costs for all components have been estimated,
so they are ready to go into production.

The Swiss watch industry is dominated by a few big groups that control lots of watchbrands. Richmont Group (Cartier, IWC, Jaeger, Panarei, Vacheron Constantin...), LVMH (Hublot, Tag Heuer, etc...) , Kering ( RM,GP, DJR )and Swatch Group (Blancpain, Breguet, Omega, Longines....). Very few brands are still independant. (e.g. Breitling, Audemars Piguet, Patek, Rolex). The big groups have vertical integration in the manufacturing and therefor for a small independant brand like us it is difficult to find good independant manufacturers. This has been and remains a continuous search for quality independant and innovative suppliers to ensure we meet our goals.
Due to my former experience at Ikepod and my actitvity as a consultant for other brands over the years we were carefully selecting the best independant suppliers of all watchparts.
The production time of a sophisticated mechanical watch like the Canopus weekplanner is minimum 5-6 months which is the reason why we indicated delivery of the timepieces for February 2014.
The recent developments in the market of mechanical mouvements indicate that ETA from Swatch Group will further contract their production for brands outside their group so we based our development with Dubois Dépraz on the new Soprod caliber A10.
After Sales Service
One main critical point in mechanical timepieces is the after sales service. As we plan to expand in worldwide markets if the kickstarter campaign is successful, we will have agents all over the world so it should not be any problem to repair your Canopus Weekplanner watches in the future, should it be necessary, in case you dropped your watch or similar. By the end of the year we will nominate a repair center for the USA, for South America, for the Middle East, for China, for Europe and for Japan and Oceania. These service centers will be receiving spare parts from us. We will include in our delivery of the watch to you the list of the service centers we have selected around the globe by then. It is very important to us that a fast aftersales service is guaranteed for A.Manzoni & Fils all over the world.
The watches will have a warranty of 5 years on all manufacturing defects from the date of delivery to you.
