What is Sweets & Bitters Quarterly?
In each issue of Sweets & Bitters Quarterly, photo essays and excellent design illustrate easy-to-follow recipes. Serious cooks will find inspiration; beginners will get helpful tips and explanations of simple cooking science; and armchair chefs can eat with their eyes. Its novella sized high-quality print format makes Sweets & Bitters ideal to collect or gift. Pastries and cocktails feature in every issue, tempered by wholesome everyday foods. Likewise, aspirations to eat locally and seasonally are balanced with pragmatism about our busy lives and readily available ingredients.
The images below include headings for picnic menus in the first issue, and a few other spreads. Each issue will have a different theme.

Why print in this digital age?
I pore through cookbooks for recipes to take me somewhere new or to return me somewhere familiar. My favorite cookbooks fall open to the most used pages–stained with bakers chocolate and dusty with flour. Coffee rings overlap hand-written notes scrawled in margins. Menus jotted on post-its mark pages that remind me of past dinner parties. I have others I’ve never used, but whose photographs transport me to exotic tables. Their physicality is important: they are special objects that connect me to those times and places.
Each edition of Sweets & Bitters quarterly will be ripe for staining favorite recipes with ingredients, experiencing new dishes through lively photos, and for treasuring or gifting to anyone who loves beautiful books and good food. By publishing quarterly we can stay in touch with the seasons, keep up with food trends, and playfully write and design each issue around a different theme.
Who are we?
I'm Hannah Kirshner; Sweets & Bitters Quarterly is my dream, and my friends Kristen and Isaac believe in me enough to contribute their valuable professional talents. Isaac Gertman is the most talented designer I know, and there are a lot of them at RISD where we became friends. With an impressive resume behind him, he’s now a principal at Paper-White Studio in Manhattan.
Kristen Blush was a Pacific Northwest girl like me, but we met in New York, where she moved when she outgrew her big shoes in the Seattle photography scene. After working at the Stranger and contributing to publications like GQ and Filter, she picked up to start all over on the East Coast where she freelances and contributes to Getty Images.
We need your help!
The first issue (all about picnics) is ready to print, and YOUR KICKSTARTER PLEDGE WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. In return I want to give you something of value: exclusive access to sneak peeks, first run copies of the quarterly, and a fabulous party to celebrate the launch. If you pledge at a higher level I’ll bake you cookies, send you a signed photo or drawing, or even cook a private dinner party in your home. Later, subscription dues and advertising will cover production costs and keep the presses rolling. Please join us!
Where will the money go? Then what?
Our $7,500 dollar goal will print a limited run of the first issue. If we reach $10,000, we can print the second issue too. Anything beyond that will allow me to pay the hardworking professionals pouring their talents into this project, and to continue printing and growing Sweets & Bitters Quarterly.
To sustain this project in the long term, we will sell advertising (as well as subscriptions). Each ad will be a full page at the back of the book, designed by us, and text only. The advertisers name and message will be clearly and beautifully presented, without interfering with the look and feel of the book. For more information, please contact email@example.com
