About

Nick (Left) & JB
Nick (Left) & JB

This is Nick and JB. They have autism. Each week the two men host Hot Tracks on WCET-TV, a local access channel in their hometown of Hudsonville, Michigan, that has been running for 12 seasons. The friends and co-hosts riff on popular music and one another, rating songs on a five-star scale before ending the show with a very pure, very real, very fun air jam.

We met them several years ago and realized that they are both unique individuals with many great qualities and interesting personalities. They were joined together at a public access station in Hudsonville, Michigan in 2002 where they started a show called "Hot Tracks".

Watch their show clips below:

Watch More Hot Tracks Clips

When you just watch the clips without any idea of their backstory, they seem sort of funny and crazy, and when you get to know them more, you know they do want you to laugh, but they don’t always know why they’re making you laugh.

It’s a very fine line on the show, and it’s a very fine line in the doc too, because we obviously never wanted it to come across as though we’re making fun of the guys or people with autism as a group. We made it fun, because they’re fun. We kept the tone in line with who they are as people.

  • Our Connection

Andrew Bedinger and James Grochowalski grew up in Grand Rapids, a 25-minute drive away from Hudsonville. When James got a part-time job at WCET-TV after high school he saw Nick and JB's show and decided he was watching something special. Initially, he and Andrew simply picked their favorite clips and uploaded them to YouTube, where Nick and JB developed a small but dedicated cult following.

  • Our Learning Experiences

This documentary has opened up a lot of doors for us in terms of educating ourselves during production of the film. Our relationship with Nick and JB is now extremely close. There wasn’t much of a connection before, but being part of their lives, talking with their families, doing a bunch of research, it was a great learning experience for us, and we’re very invested in the educational side of it too. I really hope people see the documentary and decide to educate themselves more about autism.
We really wanted to share with the public how an individual deals with autism and what their normal day to day life looks like. Autism is a way of life and many people struggle with different forms of autism. With your donation to our documentary project, this can become a reality.

  • Why We Need Funding

We need to get this film into as many film festivals as we can to spread the awareness of autism. We need your help to cover the costs of submission fees to film festivals. A part of the donations would go to Nick and J.B. and their families for allowing us into their lives and willing to share personal information for the world to hear. Also part of the donations will go towards local businesses, bands, and family members who have helped us along with making this documentary.

We have been filming and editing the documentary for 5 years and have just completed the documentary. We put a lot of hard work, time, and effort into making this documentary and have funded it with our very own money and used our own personal equipment. We have posted this documentary on youtube for people to watch for free, because we are so passionate about the topic of autism. We feel more people need to know about this documentary and we need your help to get this film into as many places as possible.

  • What happens if we don't reach the goal?

If we don't reach the full amount in the 30 days, then Kickstarter returns all pledged money to the backers.

  • What we believe funding will accomplish

These two individuals are only known in the local area, but we believe they will become well known and loved throughout the country and throughout the world. We believe this documentary will entertain and inform others about people who have autism. We just need your help to send it out to the world! We whole heartedly believe that this can be an HBO or Netflix featured documentary. Please help us share this amazing story of two individuals who are willing to share their life story and open up about the autism they have.

Thank you!

Risks and challenges

We may be faced with challenges of music copyright when submitting to film festivals, which means we may have to edit out parts of the documentary that include copy-written music. Our deadline to submit to film festivals could be delayed due to this process.

Please comment and critique the documentary and let us know of anything that you think could be changed to help make the documentary more interesting to other viewers before submitting to festivals. Thanks.
