Started by three Russian ladies (myself, my mom and my godmother), Kurochka Clothing is a line of t-shirts and more with a hint of The Motherland. We're screenprinting (and later hand-painting) handsome and often humorous designs based on Russian and Ukrainian folk lore, fairy tales and culture.
We're going to include the Sparknotes versions of all the tales so that when someone asks you, "What's up with that cabin with chicken legs on your shirt?" you can tell them all about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_yaga and her cabin. How else can we help you impress your friends? We're planning a series of food illustrations printed on the clothes, with the recipe included. Stock up on beets now because you're going to be cooking a lot of borscht. And that's just the beginning.
For our first run, we are screenprinting several designs on t-shirts, but in the future, we plan to also hand paint custom designs directly on the garment. This means we can forgo the limitations of screenprinting, use color freely and paint anything you want on any article of clothing. As they say, the only limit is your imagination. This is what our artist (my godmother) does for a living; you can see some of her work on her site: http://kunetsart.com
We're creating this Kickstarter project to pay for the expenses leading up to our launch - blank tees from American Apparel, screen printing and shipping for 3-4 designs are some pretty hefty costs, followed by packaging, promo items, Kickstarter/Amazon fees and the time and labor of web design and marketing.
The biggest cost of all, though, will be shipping blank garments to Ukraine, where the artist lives, for her to hand-paint, and shipping them back to NY to distribute. We know the authenticity is worth it and we're excited to get these shirts made. We hope you are, too!
(These pictures are mock-ups intended to give you an idea as to the sorts of designs Kurochka will be printing. They are a limited representation of the final product.
International pledgers, please add a little extra for shipping)
