Who Are We?
Blaise Dejardin is the principal cellist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Kee-Hyun Kim is the cellist of the Grammy-winning Parker String Quartet. Friends since their student days at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, they are partnering for this first recording project for Opus Cello.
Opus Cello is the leading publisher of sheet music for cello ensemble, founded in 2013 by Blaise Dejardin, a four-times ASCAP Plus Award-winning arranger. Opus Cello arrangements are played by cellists such as Yo-Yo Ma, the Boston Cello Quartet, the Bolshoi Theatre Cello Quartet, L'Orchestre de Violoncelles and the cello sections of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, New World Symphony and Wurttembergisches Kammerorchester.
Making this first album for the Opus Cello recording label a success will hopefully allow Opus Cello to produce more cello ensemble albums in the future.
What Are We Doing?
We're recording an album! In fact, this will be the first album of cello duos by Mozart ever made! Mozart didn't give the cellists of his time the honor of featuring them as solo players in his music, so we are rectifying this blunder today! We are recording transcriptions for 2 cellos by Blaise Dejardin of the iconic Duos KV423 & KV424 for violin & viola and the Variations on "Ah Vous dirai-je Maman" K265/300e for piano (this French song is known as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in the US).
Our intrepid pair of cellists is joined by the multiple-GRAMMY-award-winning producer Jesse Lewis, and we are thrilled to be working together. Jesse is a cellist himself and recently recorded the critically acclaimed Boston Cello Quartet album The Latin Project. We are all on a mission to make this world premiere recording of cello duos by Mozart a success and we invite you to join us! Help us bring this great music to cello lovers and music lovers everywhere.
Who already believes in this project?
This project is already supported by some of the major cellists of today:
“I am very excited about the new duo project of my dear friend and colleague Blaise Dejardin, and I can’t wait to hear it. Warmest wishes for a great success!” Gautier Capuçon
“Finally it’s here! The repertoire all cellists are painfully missing, recorded and arranged by some of the finest cellists of our time.” Johannes Moser
“This project pairs music and virtuosity to enrich our repertoire in a superb manner. A thousand thanks!” Lluis Claret
"Wow! Blaise Dejardin and Kee- Hyun Kim are superb cellists, full of musical imagination and personality! I have been a big fan of them both since their student days 10 years ago. I love this duo project!" Paul Katz
“Blaise Dejardin’s exploratory spirit in broadening the cello repertoire is inspiring, and his transcriptions are always clever, musically apt, and wonderfully executed. I can’t wait to hear this new album!” Brinton Averil Smith
"I can’t wait to hear the new recording of Opus Cello! The program sounds exquisite and you can’t find better interpreters than Blaise Déjardin and Kee-Hyun Kim. Fingers crossed that the CD will see the light of day soon!" Julian Steckel
"Two extremely accomplished former students are doing something remarkable: Invading the Mozart violin/viola and piano repertory! Who can blame them, since cellists of Mozart’s day weren’t friendly enough to him (loans, carousing, you name it). Let’s support them so they succeed in making up for that gaffe by our earlier colleagues!" Laurence Lesser
"Blaise’s music making has always been a fruitful mix of serenity and top quality playing. Since our youngest times-we both joined the studio of Philippe Muller at the Paris Conservatoire in the same year-, I’m fascinated by the development of his artistic personality. I’m highly looking forward to his Mozart Album with Kee-Hyun Kim, who is the perfect partner for this project!" Raphael Merlin
How can I help?
Pick a reward and pledge to help us reach our goal of $15,000! If you can pledge more than the minimum amount required for your reward, it is a big help too. It will bring us faster to our goal and ensure the smooth sailing of this project until the album is released.
Also, feel free to share this page with your friends and family and let them know that this is a project worth supporting. Frankly, we feel Mozart himself would support this project if he could!
