The story of cult figure John Simons and a style-obsessed underground British youth culture which still influences us today.
The Neat Offensive is a short documentary film about the roots of men’s style and the people behind some of the most important subcultural movements to come out of the UK in the past fifty years.
Centered around the story of pioneering retailer and cult designer John Simons, the film looks at the music, the politics, the clubs and the styles that still remain at the heart of British youth culture and menswear to this day.
London born Simons started his shops in the East End and then in Richmond and quickly become instrumental in the development of mod culture and the styles that emerged to kickstart Sixties Swinging London as well as more controversial style movements like skinhead and suede-head.
While everyone knows the story of Seditionaries and Sex, of punk rock and New Wave this story with shops called Ivy and Squire and bands called The Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton and later Dexys Midnight Runners, the Style Council, Madness and the Specials is no less compelling and no less important.
Interviewing the people who where there and the ones who made it happen, this is a story which has remained truly underground, until now.

The major challenges are nailing down some of the people we are interviewing. Also tracking down music rights from the mid 50's and 60's, and agreeing licenses may take longer than we hope.
