'Great Artists Steal' is a hand-drawn platformer in which you play a scribbled character in a 2-dimensional scribbled world, trying to steal famous masterpieces. Steal a new painting in each level before your ink runs out.
Run along the tops of the frames, slide down the edges and jump between frames.
Careful of the paintings hung on a nail - they can only take your weight for so long.
Red enemies spawn unexpectedly and will attack using ranged weapons.
Blue enemies patrol the environment and if they spot you, they will give chase and use melee attacks.
You carry a giant fountain pen, which can be used for melee and ranged attacks (stick them with the pointy end or lob some ink at them).
The ink you have left is both your health and your ammo, so be sure to collect the inkpots to top up your ink along the way!
After each level, the newly stolen masterpiece is added to your collection and will become one of the paintings you must navigate around to reach your next target.
SCR1BBLE has hand-drawn every visual asset for the game on white card with a fineliner pen (although we assume he went through quite a few pens). He has so far passed along exactly 50 pages to Handprint to go into the game.
Each of these pages has been scanned into the computer using a high quality scanner. The white background of the paper was removed in Photoshop to leave game assets with transparency around them. Any animated components were then lined up in Photoshop frame by frame and exported to the Unity game engine.
Over 200 frames of character animation were required for the player abilities demonstrated in the trailer. Here are a few of the completed animations:

Handprint Games is a small indie games startup based in The Whisky Bond in Glasgow, Scotland. SCR1BBLE is a local artist in Glasgow who has always wanted a pseudonym. Standing by the canal outside The Whisky Bond smoking a cigarette, SCR1BBLE and Gary from Handprint Games got to talking. Upon realising there may be an opportunity to combine their media, they came up with the idea for this game.

The funds raised will be used to create a testable MVP, then complete the game's development. We intend to extend gameplay to a few fast-paced hours by adding more levels/paintings to steal, and really diving into level design to create fun and challenging situations for the player to navigate.
We will release the game on Steam (Windows, Mac, Linux) initially, with the possibility of a Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One release in the future.
Initial Steam release estimated March 2020.
We have some awesome digital and physical rewards available. Prints of artworks that have gone into the game, T-shirts, an art book containing game designs and also hand-drawn portraits by SCR1BBLE himself.
Risks and challenges
Handprint Games is a fairly new startup with two games created and launched in the past 6 months ('Punch Perfect' and '3EALITY'). While we are confident that we can complete the game by the estimated launch date, nobody can predict the future and it is possible that delays may occur. Our primary goal will be to make "Great Artists Steal" as fun and as beautiful as possible.
While the majority of art assets have been completed for the current version, there is a risk that SCR1BBLE will hurt his drawing hand, affecting his ability to add new artwork to the game and complete the portrait rewards in a timely manner. He has assured us that he will be super careful this year.
Thank you for your support and we hope you are as excited as we are to see the finished version!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
