My name is Martha Iserman and I am an artist and science illustrator working in northern California. My art has always been inspired by the natural world and I have been fortunate enough to work for a variety of research institutions and museums in their entomology and invertebrate zoology departments. Getting to work with insects in all their fascinating shapes and colors has been a highlight of my career, and the inspiration behind Intricate Insects!
You can see my work at my website www.bigredsharks.com.
This book was created one page at a time over the last three years. The first versions started fairly basic, but as I got more feedback from friends and colorers I decided to add additional levels of line-work and pattern to each design. At a certain point, there was a split in the requests I was getting from users. Some wanted more levels of detail to the pattern while others liked where the pages were at. I tested out different ideas and eventually landed on the perfect solution; offer both levels of detail on one page! By incorporating finely hued detail lines into the illustration, users can now tune the level of intricacy to their own tastes for each coloring page. They can choose to color over the detail lines or follow them to create beautiful and different patterns depending on their choice.
I spent months beta testing to find the perfect transparency and hue so that the detail lines are usable but aren’t a distraction when colored over. Not only does this give every user options for how to interact with the pages, it also gives each page multiple color-throughs! This is why with every reward above $10 you will receive a digital download of Intricate Insects so you can color every arthropod in different shades AND different levels of detail!
This project has been a labor of love for me and I’m really excited to finally bring it to the Kickstarter Community. All I need is your help to make my dream come true and get this coloring book printed and in your hands. Please check out the rewards below!
Every page started as a sketch from an insect specimen (all acquired through ethical museum grade resources). Though the illustrations are obviously stylized, I wanted to maintain a general scientific accuracy in proportions and shapes.
After settling on mosaic patterns for the backgrounds, I decided on scanning my drawings into my computer and using Adobe Illustrator to make sure all of the lines were clean and readable.
I then went through each page line by line and chose which should be lowered in opacity to get the gray secondary patterns that can be used or ignored.
I colored each page myself, to make sure all of the patterns matched up correctly, and that they were all both challenging and fun!
Each page took around 12-15 hours to complete from start to finish.
The book will be 8.5 x 11 inches, perfect bound with a full glossy cover and will include 30 coloring pages, 1-sided and on 60lb# card-stock to prevent bleed through.
The majority of the money received will be going towards printing costs. I’ve spent months negotiating quotes from printers to find the perfect options as I want this book to be of the highest quality. The rest of the money will go to shipping, other rewards costs, and fees.
In addition, if we go over the $3,000 total I will offer the following stretch goals.
$4,000 - 5 additional Intricate Insects Pages in each book!
$5,000- 10 additional Intricate Insects Pages in each book!
$6,000- 15 additional Intricate Insects Pages in each book plus a color print with each Intricate Insects Book!
So thank you for taking the time to check out Intricate Insects and please click the green button to donate! If you have any questions about the campaign please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be happy to discuss the project with you. Cheers! -Martha
Risks and challenges
I've been working on the logistics of this project for over a year, and am confident that the risks are low. I've found a printer, calculated all of the costs and fees, and factored in shipping. The biggest challenge is already completed- finishing the design of the pages. I have added a $5 shipping charge to orders from outside of the United States to help mitigate the cost.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
