Located at the gateway of Sonoma and Napa, Jack London Taproom will be a purveyor of fine local craft beer from Northern California. Opening in late Summer 2017, the Taproom, or JLTR as we like to call it, will be an homage to legendary author Jack London, and the time he spent in Sonoma County.
Jack London was known for setting his novels in places as far-flung and foreign as the Yukon Territory and the High Seas. But London’s formative years — and his final years, as well — were all spent in Northern California.
Our inspiration comes from a journey Jack took through Northern California, in which he chronicled the many towns and over 100 beer establishments he visited. We will offer a Passport Program that allows the JLTR customer to travel the historical trail and receive stamps from participating breweries along the way. Once the passport is full, the JLTR customer will receive a beer for the exact cost that Jack paid over 100 years ago.
The Kickstarter fund will allow us to complete the outdoor Taproom beer garden located adjacent to the Taproom at Cornerstone Sonoma. Cornerstone is a marketplace featuring a collection of world-class shopping, boutique wineries and tasting rooms, artisanal foods, art-inspired gardens, live music, and home to Sunset's Gardens + Outdoor Test Kitchen. The space is surrounded by rolling hills, endless vineyards, and a breathtaking golden evening glow. Through our partnership with Sunset Magazine, we now have a very large outdoor fire pit and seating area (courtesy of Belgard) on decomposed granite, providing a natural, rustic look. The beer garden will also provide an area for music, private events, bar games (cornhole, anyone?), or just the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
We will capture the creative essence and adventurous spirit of Jack, and share this lifestyle with you. Pull up a stool and join us - as Jack said, "life is so short. I would rather sing one song than interpret the thousand."
Risks and challenges
We are actively working toward obtaining all regulatory approvals needed to open the Taproom. We have successfully developed larger, more complex projects in the past and therefore have a thorough understanding of what it takes to complete these tasks. We have engaged experienced legal and regulatory advisors to assist us in obtaining these approvals and thus to ensure our success. We believe there is nothing in our plan that would prevent us from receiving the approvals. The real risk in our assessment is just the timing of the approvals.
Delays in Opening
Our target is to open in late Summer 2017. Depending on the timing of receipt of all the regulatory approvals required, this start date could be pushed back since the construction crew cannot begin its work until we have final building permits. Since we are not actually constructing a new space, but rather renovating an existing one, we don’t believe there is real risk of a material construction delay once it begins.
We have a detailed cost estimate to complete the Taproom. Private capital contributors, in addition to this Kickstarter campaign, will fund the costs of the Taproom and its beer garden. Should we require funds above and beyond our estimates, we believe additional capital will be obtainable.
