Last fall, I was fired for being transgender. This summer, I'm touring 'No Gender Left Behind' across the Midwest to examine why.
With your help, I hit my goal of $275 for gas money to get from Chicago to Kansas City and Indianapolis, and back. But what happens if you keep going? Money above and beyond $275 goes to props: Whistles, clipboards, fake moustaches, and more! It goes to publicity material: Posters and postcards galore! It goes to choreographers and photographers and much much more! So please, keep the pledges coming.
No Gender Left Behind
In the Fall of 2010, I was fired from a teaching position for being a transgender woman. The experience left me wondering what America is teaching its children – and its adults – about gender, conformity, and being just a little bit different.
No Gender Left Behind is the result of that wondering. A solo performance ranging from the halls of Washington DC to the hardships transgender and gender non-conforming folks face every day, from an ideal classroom environment to the inner workings of my very own heart, No Gender Left Behind is my response to my firing. But it's also a show about how we all transgress gender in our own little ways, how transgender rights are fundamental to everyone's rights.
No Gender Left Behind tours this summer to the Kansas City Fringe Festival (July 21-31), the Indianapolis Fringe Festival (August 19-28), the Chicago Fringe Festival (September 1-11).
Kickstarter already helped get me to DC in March for the National Center for Transgender Equality's lobby day and to perform research for NGLB. Your support - from friends, from family, and from total strangers - was utterly overwhelming. Now I'm asking you to help just a little bit more.
Road trip? Excellent!
I need your help to fund my journeys from Chicago to Kansas City, and from Chicago to Indianapolis. Since I'll be carrying costumes, props, and and more, and I'll need to get around once I'm there, I'll be driving. I'm ballparking about $200 for gas to KC and back, and $75 for gas to Indy and back. (Fingers crossed gas doesn't spike, which is perhaps a naive hope...)
So for $275 you help bring No Gender Left Behind to audiences who might never otherwise hear about a transgender experiences beyond those told on Oprah or the nightly news. You bring it to other LGBTQ folks who might have never seen someone like themselves on stage. You help get my story told, along with the stories of other transgender and gender non-conforming folks.
Not to mention, you get nifty backers rewards!
And as cliche as it sounds, every dollar does help. Really truly it does. Surpassing the $275 goal would mean additional funding for my director, choreographer, graphic designer, promotional material, on and on and on. So please pledge, tell your friends - this Kickstarter project doesn't end until September 11, the last day of the Chicago Fringe Festival. And come see No Gender Left Behind in Kansas City, Indianapolis, or Chicago!
