The Endowment for Unexceptional Humans was conceived of and created by two writers (Amy and Jeremy) and a systems administrator (Scott). Together we decided to start and maintain an online community organization dedicated to giving regular people a second chance to achieve excellence, and to write a book about our experience doing so and why this mission is so important in America. Part book project, part online community, part good works, ours is a creative project with a mission. That’s why we’re here at Kickstarter: to raise funds to help bring our project to life, and to connect with a diverse community of people interested in creative ways to give people a chance to achieve their goals. If we meet our goal, we will be able to start the paperwork and afford the fees to become incorporated, buy supplies, document this project, and of course, make our first really big scholarship and grant awards. And if you help us, we’ll give you awesome rewards!
The Endowment for Unexceptional Humans has two explicit purposes: the first is to provide financial and community support to individuals who wish to further their education for a good reason and who have a solid plan for academic success, and to do the same for groups who have good ideas and reasonable plans for shepherding their ideas, products, or organizations to fruition. The second purpose of The Endowment for Unexceptional Humans is to combat the American ideal of rugged individualism and the myth that we live in a meritocracy. We do this by focusing on an individual or group's plan for the future and their ability to demonstrate their perseverance, resilience, support and character.
We do not provide merit scholarships. There are plenty of merit scholarships in the world, and those who qualify for them are mostly exceptional enough that they need little help on their path to success. Rather, we provide funding and community support for the rest of us --those who for whatever reason have enormous potential but not, so far, the ability to always make others see this. These scholarships and grants are designed for people and groups who can demonstrate a gap between their potential and their past performance, and who have a plan for closing that gap. You do not have to be particularly normal or average to receive our help and to join our growing community. We want to help anyone with a good plan to do well and do good. While not all of us, by definition, can be exceptional, we all have the potential for excellence.
If we meet our goal, all funds will go directly to helping us achieve our dream: covering start up costs, documenting our experiences, and giving scholarships and grants.
